Can someone tell me the reason why anyone should compile MAME?
I've had a search on the forum, but I'm not sure why you would do this. Is it to improve performance?
I plan to use MaLa FE, will it make a difference?
Thanks guys ,,,

Well there are several reasons I compile my own mame. I like the "hiscore diff (with no nag/white box removal)" patch. It removes the nag screens and adds hi score support. (hence the name). I also compile for the processor on my mame machine which does tend to run mame from 5% - 10 % faster and that in turn helps those borderline games that are almost but not quite playable. :dunno

Thanks for that 9in ... I'll look into it ...
Are there any walk-throughs on this anyware?

I use headkaze's Mame Compiler 64

there's a tutorial in the thread. It is very easy and I use MKChamps "hiscore diff (with no nag/white box removal)"

Mr. Do's is also a very good walk through...http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/compile.html
I used this one with greater sucess than headKazes' (no offence to headkaze, does wonderful work)
+1 on the high score support...thats why i compiled mame.

Check out these other very useful hacks from SailorSat:

Through these modifications and her soft-15khz tools, your games will look and play more like the original with very little effort.
As for HeadKaze's compiling tool, after following Mr. Do's tutorial, I just repeat with the same batch files. But when I changed CPU's and wanted to compile for 64bit and for core2duo, I couldn't get the switches passed through correctly and mamecompile worked just great.
If anything, since headkaze is keeping up with changes in mame compiling (it seems to happen every year or so), you don't have to see what part of the instructions change by running his tool.
