Title: Centipede monitor replacement - Which monitor do I choose?
Post by: Jakobud on August 18, 2008, 04:01:07 pm
I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to Arcade monitor compatibility.  I have a Centipede that I'm restoring, going to replace the monitor.  It's a 19".  Not sure what monitor to replace it with though.

Just glancing at arcadeshop.com, http://www.arcadeshop.com/parts.htm#Monitors

Would the 19" Vision Pro Standard Resolution work?

Is there a better place to buy a monitor?  Is $179 for a 19" decent price?

Also, regarding installation, with the old monitor, does it HAVE to be discharged before removing it or is that just something that should be done for safety?  By the way, how do I discharge a monitor?  BYOAC talks about how important it is, but even the information listed in the wiki or the other monitor pages just says "consult a tv technician to do it".

With the new monitor, does it ship discharged or is it safe to handle?

Also, can I tell with the multimeter if a monitor has been discharged or not?

Sorry for all the nub questions but I'm quite new to the world of actual arcade monitors.

Monitor should not be charged when shipped... They do slowly discharge over time anyway if left turned off.. but I would never go poking around in there without checking first. I do not discharge a monitor when installing or removing a monitor anyway. I only do when servicing a monitor.

You can test with a multimeter with a high voltage probe.

Thanks for the help.

What exactly do I test with the multimeter to determine if the monitor has been discharged or not?  From what I read, you aren't supposed to touch the frame and any part of the 'electronics' at the same time.  So is that where u measure?  Just touch one end of the multimeter to the frame and the other one start poking around in the electronics?  Surely there must be some very specific spot I can test to determine how safe it is?

Here's a quick tutorial on discharging with nothing more than a screwdriver and a wire with alligator clips.

Why not give the G-07 another chance ? It's a good monitor once fixed.
Many problems can be fixed with a simple cap-kit.

Because it's not on sale anymore.

Don't worry...it should go back down.
