I would really recommend just setting up ClrMAME.  Once setup it is really easy + quick to check your ROMs (+samples, CHD's etc.).  It just requires 5 or 10 minutes to setup (new versions do not need re-setting up either).

I have heard RomCenter is good and a bit easier too, but I have not used this.  Sorry, I do not know of any other alternatives.

I so feel like flaming but I won't. Give romcenter a second chance it's pretty easy.

I agree with Minwah.  Setup clrmame and after that it's easy to check and fix roms.  Clrmame can even automatically check for and upgrade to new versions of clrmame.

When a new mame comes out, just get the data in a dat file or by pointing clrmame to the new mame and making it lookup the info, and scan.

Then drop any new/fix files/zips into the scan missing windows and clrmame will put the correct files in the correct zips if included in the stuff you dropped.

Don't even worry about the "Rebuilder" and "Merger" buttons if all you want to do is keep up to date; just use "Scanner".

Clrmame would do it, I think, but you need a site that lets links from the outside download files.  Read the help file for more info.

Romcenter is supposed to be easier, but I found clrmame so easy I stopped using romcenter.

Romcenter in my opinion is definitely easier to understand, but if you are going to be 'collecting' you should learn how to use clrmame, it isn't very difficult..

I use mame32 to audit my roms to test the ones i have are good.
Sometimes by using CLRmame to do its "thing" on the roms I made more roms fail the mame32 audit.Must of had something to do with the crc checker or removing unneccessary files or something.
Anyway i just found it easier to redownload the reported faulty rom and recheck with mame32.

Just run CLRMAME without any of the action buttons checked.Iie it wont change any thing.
Click Missing list and it makes a txt file listing roms you havent got.
not to hard to run.Just a little setting up pointing programm to mame.exe.

i would find the missing roms , then run mame32 , run an audit ,copy and paste the results to a temp txt file , then go through the list.redown load any roms that show crc error etc.
Ignore the ones with the message "no good dump known" etc.
You might find a lot of the faulty roms arn't really , its just that u might be missing the parent rom.

often its just easier to redownload faulty roms than fix(whats the point if its only 20kb trying to fix it.just get a new one)
