I love this.
I have my son and nephew over for the past week and he brings along his Xbox360. We go out and rent 2 games at blockbuster (for damned near $18!!!) and I get them all set up in the basement to play. My nephew turns on my bartop and scrolls thru the games until he gets to Track & Field. Being a sports nut he tried it out. First thing out of my sons mouth is "jeeze lame graphics" :P Well, I say the standard "it's not all about the graphics but gameplay" bit and walk away. 2 hrs later they are still playing it. And for the entire whole week they played it, having a blast setting world records and trying to beat them. I spent quite a few hours just watching them knock my initials off the board and loving every minute of it! ;D
So, I think I am gonna build another small cab that is dedicated to the Track & Field type games and send home to them. I want to stick with the older stuff, nothing above SNES or Genesis I think. And only games that can be played with the 3 button type set-up that T&F uses.
Can you all give me some good recommendations for these types of games? Arcade, console or whatever?

hypersports

88 Games. Look under genre in MAWS.
-
'88 Games is great
There's one I can't think of at the moment that's really over the top and cartoony.
-
If you do a track and field, go old school with the buttons and not a trackball! I have a comb under my cp just for track and field matches (tell you how old I am lol)! Great game that we have a blast playing to this day.
-
LOL... looks like someones got the olympics bug? Hypersports & Track & Field
are great fun though... :)
Not sure but was there a Hyper Olympics? Might have been a clone?
-
Wasn't Hyper Olympics a Track & Field clone?
-
Thanks for the replies. I should have said what ones I'm already considering:
Track & Field (arcade)
Hyper Sports (arcade)
Konami '88 (arcade)
Track & Field 2 (nes)
And miles2912, I will go with the button setup. Whats the trick with the comb?

I forgot all about MAWS. A quick look there showed about 25 or so that would be old enough. Thanks alot!

...and don't forget combat school!

I like combat school, but it requires a joystick. Same with BC Story.

why not 2 sticks 3 buttons each? opens up ALOT more games and gives you the jamma standard
-
88 games is awesome. We played it all weekend. Probably because we where watching the olympics.
For some reason video game Decathlon is ringing in my head.
I don't think it is a mame arcade game but I remember playing it on my C64 back in the day.
I think I have that game emulated but haven't played it.
That field day game looks fun http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=field-day&page=detail&id=825
good times. I would love to have an 88 games dedicated cab. So running out of room.

er... ahh... would you believe I've never tried 88 games? I thought it was a crap clone!!!
-
Well, not quite the same... but check out California Games for the
Atari Lynx emulator. My fav is the BMX section. The Surfing is cool too.

Well at least now you know about it. You might still think it is a crap clone after you play it :dunno
I dig it because everyone can smash buttons but can you smash them faster than the next guy/girl.
Very cool game

OH yeah California games for C64 was dope (early 90's term for very cool) too. BMX was definately the best. My favorite move was the back flip and the 360 table top.
Great stuff brings me back.

California Games had several ports, but I first played it on C64 as well. Still a fun game.
-
Back in the day people would use either a comb or a pencil as a fulcrum between the 2 buttons. You would kind of hold one end of the comb on a button and rapidly tap/pound the other end to alternately activate both buttons as fast as you could. Makes for some pretty impressive scores. The real cheap and flexy black combs are the best.

Hyper Athlete is an awesome one...cannot be missed. it is a sequel to track n field. you need the chd to play this though. it is alot of fun

So far I got:
Track & Field (arcade)
Hyper Sports (arcade)
Konami '88 (arcade)
Track & Field 2 (nes)
Field-Day (arcade)
Combat School (arcade)
California Games (genesis)
Very nice everyone! Keep them coming!

If your going to add a joystick for combat school - check out BC Story. Fun game.

There is a trackball version of Combat School (AKA "Boot Camp")
Also "Numan Athletics" rings a bell...
-
Numan Athletics! That's the one I was talking about!
I love that game. I can't pass the part where you have to triple-jump across the water, but other than that, it's a great game.

Yeah, when boys feathered their long hair and carried combs (which were also used for bloody knuckles - sometimes sharpened for it!), and flutter-tapped with index and middle finger.
-
I restored a Track and Field cabinet and put 6 games on it that used the Run/Jump/Run button configuration.
Track and Field
Hypersports
88 Games
Gold Medalist
Field Day
Recordbreaker

It is interesting that you can't hear any button presses at all during the sprinting events (and it appears to be just a video taping). I sure as hell wish I could do the hammer throw that easily. :banghead:
-
yea...something is fishy. Guy was going so fast during the hurdles that his guy wasn't even running....just jumping between hurdles :dunno
-
You got me :dunno Do you know how he did that?
-
Those speeds are definitely possible with the comb trick and a highly skilled player. Just wondered why it was so silent. If you download some of the high score demos from MARP you will see people running that fast too.
-
That video's gotta be using the Run Like Hell cheat.
-
He's playing MAME. It's not exactly hard to wire up some leafswitches or make-shift buttons that you can activate faster than is possible with a traditional plunger style button.
Contrary to what Ahofle said, you can hear the noise of him doing something...
-
I wish I could manage to do this

I'm pretty sure that clicking you hear is the sound of the running dude in the game (1983 version of footsteps :P).

OK that's probably the first example of a gaming skill my wife wishes I had. :laugh2:
-

I can go faster with the trackball version. Maybe he's using a trackball?
-

Pump the volume up. Ignore the ticking... there's a "shuffling" sound going on only when running.
-
I can match that vid in the long jump and Javelin without cheating. Not in anything else though. I think my fastest 100m dash is 9.2 . I suck at the high jump.
I double tap each run button with light action leaf switches.
-
few things on track n Field - and Hyper Sports for those that care :)
TnF:
MAME with arcade controls. 7.less than 5 is possible on 100m. 3-finger or 4-finger tech will achieve this. But not every time. Real arcade is harder. But possible infrequently. I doubt the guy is cheating. It's nothing special.
The YT guy hit 1399 on his long jump. OK, not that fast and he hit the line perfectly. 50 speed bonus.
Didn't watch hammer, but someone commented so: run for the first three revolutions. Makes 1500 speed much easier to hit.
Hurdles: Anywhere near good speed means you won't really hit the ground running (lol). But your inger are running and jumping - trust me.
Hyper Sports: Three / Four finger tech DOES NOT WORK. I have MAME and the real thing. Fast, independent (LRLRLRLR instead of LLLRRRLLLRRR) button presses or good rhythm are the key. Anyone that says they use 3/4 finger on this and do well are cheating IMO. I had / have the top HS score at MARP.
In any case. I doubt the YT guy was cheating.

Hello there! :)
I m the one who made this video (TK2008) and I must tell u theres no any cheat in it.
In fact, this is not the best I can do.
This was made through Mame, thats why u dont hear any keys sound. Mame has its own option to Play and Record.
If u use the Mame's cheat option of steroids, then u make 100m in 6 min...
About 110m hurdless, I must tell u there was a help from my friend, PP1969. I run without watch, he jumps ;) U also need a perfect Start.
Now, about the speed, there are many trycks to maker it really fast. In that vid I used a joystick and pressed the button with a cigarette lighter.
Check my channel in UTube(I m as TK2008BEST ;D) in where I have many arcade games with hiscores. Feel free to ask me anything, I m always ready to answer in any query.
