Hi all,
I am a newbie when it comes to computer progaming so bear with me...I do want to learn. When it comes to electronics and woodworking I know my way around or I can figure things out. ;D
I am working on my Pole Position cabinet and have the steering and analog pedal up and running perfectly. Now comes the real fun part: the dreaded shifter. I understand the problems associated with using the shifter in mame. I have read lots of information here and on other sites and I have reviewed lots of ideas on how to correct the problem.
I would like to try and recompile the rom as I want my machine to be as close to the original as possible. There is lots of information on how to do this but it is all over the place. I was thinking that it would be great if there was one thread that would walk someone thru the process from the beginning starting with which file needs to recompiled and where I would find this file. Taking it from a newbie point of view. Similar to 'how to wire up a coin door' .Like I said I may be green but I am willing to learn even if I make a mistake here and there.

Unless you really want to do it from scatch, I'd recommend that you use Minwah's ShifterMame.

What version MAME do I need to run SHIFTERMAME?? I am running v.100. Will it work on a lower version?
-
ShifterMame is a separate build of MAME. You don't need another version of MAME to play the driving games that it covers.

This sounds very cool. So what you're saying (again be patient...newb on the other end) is I can replace the v.100 of mame that I have now with SHIFTERMAME?? Is SHIFTERMAME like a specific version of MAME designed for hi/lo shifting games? I assume you install it the same as MAME?
-
Yes, ShifterMame is specifically designed for certain driving games. You can use it to run the driving games that it covers (which are all listed in the readme file, I believe), and then use another MAME to run your other games. It's installed the same way as MAME, as far as I know, but you're best served by simply reading the documentation that's included with the ShifterMame download (which was in that link that I posted in my first response).
Hope that gets you what you're looking for.

Hi,
I tried installing shiftermame but it won't run I think because the version of direct x that I have on my used computer that I bought is not version 8. I tried downloading the newest version but the version of windows that came with the computer is an instituional version so Microsoft won't allow the install. Is there a way to get shiftermame to run using a lower version of direct x, if not I guess I'm back to trying the recompile method.

Anybody? ???

Another problem causedby not doing a clean install. Get yourself a trouble-free version of Windows and install from scratch to avoid hitches like this.
