I've recently upgraded the pc in the cab to a core2duo running vista x64. I don't know enough about the behavior yet but here's what I'm seeing.
When running the 64bit mame (official binary or my own compile), it launches from the command line fine. When launched from mala, things are slow, jerky and non-responsive. when i replace mame.exe with the old 32bit versions (again, official or own compile), everything on this same vista x64 os and machine is fine.
anything you guys can suggest to further troubleshoot?
thanks!

I've also tried the 1.05 beta mala.exe.
other things tried:
resetting permissions in the mala and mame dir for full control everyone
change mala.exe's compatibility mode to windows xp sp2, disable other things
puth mala and mame's paths in the the system path var
so it's failed on official build and core2duo optimize mame.exe's. will try pentium4 & 64bit optimization compile...

Try Deleting/renaming the Mala hook dll.
I had a look and It is mentioned here:

and

Future MaLa version will hopefully fix this by not bothering to load MaLahook.dll if OS is not 98 or ME.
Please advise if this fixes your problem ;)

holy crap that worked.... i read just a little of the thread ...
so i'm in the same OS. why does the 32bit mame.exe work while the 64bit versions break?

I think the MaLaHook is just made for 32 bit only and it chokes the 64 bit operation.
Thanks for reporting

I hope this is an unrelated question but the behavior is still similar enough...
After renaming the hook.dll file games no longer had that lag. I used pacman and other games that loaded quickly and tested by inserting coins for responsiveness.
Starblade still seems to be running slowly upon launching it from mala vs directly from cli. I'm still going through mame.ini to make sure there's nothing funky but don't know why it would single out this game (of the ones I've tested).
thanks.
