I did not submit my record to twin galaxies , because i don't have wolfmame.. and I know this was on a MAME machine, but i'm very proud of my HS Beating out Dwayne Richards official HS of 2,134,300 on a dedicated machine... I now have the *Unofficial WORLD Record of : 2,174,350 2,192,450 2,222,750! If any one can send me wolfmame or whatever is required for creating INP files for twin galaxy compliance via PM id love to retry it again, because I know i can actually beat that score. .. I think it's time to submit a run to twin galaxies . ;D
*We'll I finally did infact hit up TG, and after submitting a few over 2 million point scores, they did not accept them because I discovered the additional points that you can earn on level one with the flying dragon flies. They have since changed the rules because of me on that particular game::
Special Rules: This is a Single Credit game ONLY! Inserting more then 1 credit will risk your score being immediately disqualified
After resubmitting another run with the new rule set in place I'm now the official world record holder for Gun.Smoke in MAME with a score of 1,896,250. I'm currently building a dedicated/conversion for Gun.Smoke so I can also get that record as well. I have since already sent in a score of 1,946,650 for MAME but they didn not update that yet, it took them aprx 3 weeks to post my first submitted score.
I also noticed.. and probably only dwayne and me would notice, but after achieving 2,100,000 It did not give me an extra marshall ! I was very nervous as I was down to 1 guy, so maybe i'm wrong but im pretty positive.
(http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/4183/0012bk4.png)(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/6987/0010kc1.png) *US SET 2, (Only difference with US Set 2, and 1, and world and Jap set.. is that US Set 2 has levels 3, and 6 swapped, and on the bottom it says romstar 1986.)

Some of us are official world record holders. ;)

Go here, and the various versions of WolfMAME are listed under Versions at the top.

I intend on building a dedicated gunsmoke cab with the actual pcb, but would rather find an original dedicated, I know alot of them were pacman / centipede quick conversion kits. At least I know how to break the record now I have NOS Extra side art set for this game, hey it's a start?

How long does a game last at 2+ million points?

Did you ever figure out the deal with those firefly looking graphics glitches in MAME? I think that was you that found it anyway.
Congrats on the score. I always thought that was a very difficult game.

Yes! well I was correct.. basically once you see one, every 15 quarters they will appear on level 1. I only have one coin in side B(6)... rest are in slot A(5)...
US Set 2
Coin A, B =Amount of dragon fly's
611+1=612 =2x = 20,000 extra points on level 1
626+1=627 =3x = 30,000
641+1=642 =4x =40k
656+1=657 =5x =50k
671+1=672 =6x =60k
686+1=687 =7x =70k
701+1=702 =8x =80k
716+1=717 =9x =90k
731+1=732 =10x =100k
746+1=747 =11x =110k
761+1=762 =12x =120k
776+1=777 =13x =130k
791+1=792 =14x =140k
806+1=807 =15x =150k
*Update* ::: 821+1=822 =*aprx 40x-50x =400k-500k !!!!!
836+1=1x (back to only one dragon fly)
World (set)
coin A: 1271 coin: B 60=1x = 10,000 points
*Every 15 Coins an extra dragon fly will appear worth 10,000 points each on level one.. and eventually randomlly resets it self again until you find the 15 coin pattern.
here again is the video i uploaded to youtube playing with my feet! because i was recording with my other hand, but you can clearly see my score go up 10,000 additional points upon hitting the dragon fly.. level one after the first guy with dynamite tossing at you, you should have about 4,000 points or so this is the place where you would see them appear if you wanted to test it out be my guest!

That's not so bad. Now to find you a real machine....
I have found a few conversions very beat up, I was offered a very cheap 100.00 for 2 different cabs but id like to have one cosmetically in better shape. Does funspot sell their games? this is a tough one to find in good shape because most were conversions, I saw the PA Game room warehouse had one listed on the web site, i went to see it in person because I was going to Hershey park, and I was offered it for only 100 bucks, but very poor condition / water damage needed cap kit, guy didn't know even if the pcb worked. also i noticed it was in an atari cab. Other one is on klov for 100 bucks but doesnt even have the 3 buttons to shoot the bullets with , rather dip switch was changed to fire bullets with the joystick, not my cup of tea.. I have recently seen the PCB go for 29 bucks last week on ebay which is pretty good... I'm sure i'll find the right condition one eventually and the person selling it to me would be happy to know that a world record will be accomplished on that machine!

I guess it's finally time for me to break out the VHS of my 2.35 million score. >:D

bring it! I know I can beat the score I got today.. just looking for new challengers! serious? I hope.. I need some competition. I'm still having trouble setting up wolfmame for the INP stuff
side note.. btw love your indiana jones cab, looks awesome so far! wish I could afford the new Stern pinball indiana jones cab

This is awesome.
Unofficial score is good enough for me, congrats Mr Clean!
For me, being the best in my house at a game is good enough. :)

Thanks, now if only i can get wolfmame working!
-
I am too lazy to research it myself...
In a nutshell, what is wolfmame?
Eric.
-
It's a custom version of MAME that is less prone to cheats/exploits. For example you can't pause the game.

Thanks! The project is on hot weather hiatus right now.
And no, I'm not serious. Just a King of Kong reference. Congrats on your score.
-
Hmmmm. Wolfmame sounds interesting.
It always kinda bugged me that we can pause in-game. That's about an inauthentic as you can get!
Same with save state, when used to beat higher levels. Cheating!
(Save state is good for saving high scores for those that aren't supported by hiscores.dat I know, when it works that is)
Anyway, I've often considered disabling/removing my pause button. But I know the Ipac shift sequence too and I can't unlearn it. :)
Just gotta have discipline...
My rules (I try to live by):
1. no pausing for breaks
2. no quitting a game early if you suck out on the first level (gotta "play out the quarter")
Eric.
-
yeah i got wolfmame working, i can play my game etc.. but i don't know how to create the INP file and where it saves it to etc?
i was told "In command-line:
> mame gunsmoke -record gunsmoke.inp
not sure how to do that
solution to creating INP in wlfmame..
-open note pad, type in : "mame gunsmoke -record gunsmoke.inp" and save the file as ; gunsmoke-record.bat
*edit..*
*now i got it to save an INP file, however i still don't know how to have it generate a .WLF file as well... also once i create the INP is there a way to play it back ? if so how>?
-
No Pause? Suppose my beer is getting warm or I need to take a call in the middle of a game. Dam.. I love my pause button.
EDIT - I need to check out Gun Smoke on my cab. Never heard of the game and looks like fun.

don't get addicted, or you will beat me~!

Don't shoot ! I'll come quietly, and take a plea bargain. ;D
Hey, with that score ... did you complete all the levels, kill all the bosses, and reach the end of the game ? ::)

Shocked no one else asked me that yet, That's a really good question, and the answer is surprisgly no! I got up to level 10 to the three brothers, yes I have beat the game before, however if you do that's it and your score is what it is.. so you need to purposely die, especially if you have marshalls left.. the trick is to try to drain as many as you can and then attempt to beat it on that last guy. technically if i beat him it would of been an additional 85,000 points.. they are tough.. well the main brother of the wingate family anyways. here is a pic of me beating it another time.. obviously the score isnt nearly as good;

your avatar, what's your HS ? or do you just like that character?

Ok. Lots of fun and added to my list of favorites!

I just learned not only is that game extremely hard but it also works out my forearms.
Seriously, it takes at least 2 hours of pinball to do what 10 minutes & unmentionable continues on Gun Smoke does.
You have some skill to say the least, its tough to adapt to the bullet range & timing moving angle shots.
-

thanks !
Oh yeah close to getting wolfmame working, i can get it to create an inp file and i know now how to play it back.. two problems.. how do i get it to create a wlf file. and if in mame i hit tab, and then playback the inp file it doesnt show what settings im using is this normal? in other words if i hit tab, go to book keeping, or video settings anything it wont display it during playback of the INP file i'm using the command line , i tried wolf mame plus and i just got grey bars i wasnt even able to load a game.
sidenote, is that a dynamo cab? looks nice
-
Well its a showcase, unsure if Dynamo made it.
Kind of like asking for Kleenex & hearing "All we have are tissues" ;D.
Man my arm still hurts
-
I played this game years ago on the NES, but forgot the arcade version was vert until I saw miles2912's post.
Put it on my vert cab and played, definitely a hard game. Think I managed around 100k after a few plays, mostly based on skills learned playing Commando. They look and sound a lot alike, wish Commando had the continue feature and 3 button shooting!

It certainly is. Used to have one of those beasts in my living room.
Now it's in my living will.

Though at first I was skeptical, turns out I like this game. Love the graphics. It's certainly a workout at first, and then one gets used to the three directions and optimising when to fire, but moving up high on the screen, as well as just becoming familiar with the baddies' entry spots, getting them early and with fewer shots. Played maybe ten games and almost killed the third boss, so maybe a really high score is in the future. Still, the hectic-ness of this game - '85, doesn't that predate the manic vert shooters by a few years?

My advice to you is that you play either..
Gun Smoke World *Ninja level 3 Indian Chief Level 6
Gun Smoke US set 1 *Ninja level 3 Indian Chief Level 6
Gun Smoke Jap *Ninja level 3 Indian Chief Level 6
Not Gun Smoke Set 2..
Because level 3, and 6 are swapped
*Indian Chief level 3 Ninja Level 6
But it's all a matter of opinion i suppose

With Hyperspin about to have a public release in a day or two I thought it would only be fitting for me to design the theme for gunsmoke so i created this:
Alt Colors:

Another Flash idea:

Hopefully someone can help me to have this for the August 6th release

It goes without saying, but congrats on the awesome score. :applaud:
yes I have beat the game before
When you complete the game, does it have a little ending animation ?
Perhaps riding into town on your horse, with the town folk cheering from either side of the street ... then you dismount from your horse, stride into the town clerk's office, and collect a few sacks of cash for your hard-earned bounty money ? And then, maybe use some of that cash for some well deserved R&R at the town's whore-house. ;D
tpb, ment to ask a while ago, but you happen to have pig joe as your avatar, what's your HS ? or do you just like that character?
I thought his name was Joe Keep ... have a look at his bounty poster on intro. screens ...
I'm "ordinary at best" at playing the game ... don't worry, your high score shall never be at threat from me. 8)
I've yet to get past the Ninja boss throwing those stars, at the end of level 3.
While I was never great at the game, it's one of the games I remember most fondly from my teenage years ... it was always great fun to play, and I had good times playing it with my brother and my mates in those days, at the local bowling alley.
So this game, apart from being great fun, has a nostalgia aspect for me.

We'll it's very boring actually its got really slow text that makes you pull your hair out to read because it's typed in very slowly, it would of been nice for the score to "roll" and let you keep playing . I hope some day to see this game as an arrangement kinda like Namco's classic collection vol.1 and 2 Pacman, sure the original is by far better the chemistry works and its cool to see a slight change, but keeping most of the game play original
I'm "ordinary at best" at playing the game ... don't worry, your high score shall never be at threat from me. 8)
good to know.. but i think i can get 2.5 / 2.8 who knows maybe even 3 million! eventually so i eagerly await anyones legit challenge.
I've yet to get past the Ninja boss throwing those stars, at the end of level 3.
TIP : The ninja is vulnerable right afer he does his back flip. and if your still struggling, try to retain the horse when you get up to him.

Ive yet to play it on a dedicate machine! have seen one in non working order though I knew of this game because it was my dad and my favorite on the NES, found it on MAME which was one of my reasons for building my cab.
-
I'm playing the world version, so yeah the ninja. Nice themes there. Background could go either way.
-
Just beat my HS again, now my new best is currently 2,192,450 I can now also confirm that when you get 2,100,000 points you are not awarded an extra life

Get this man to a real Gun.Smoke machine, pronto!

Get this man to a real Gun.Smoke machine, pronto!
The only one that i know of is at funspot in NH, and I live in NY kinda far at the moment especially with the cost of gas, however hypothetically in the event I decide to go off peak on a non tournament day how does it work exactly do i ask a random worker that i'm about to attempt to beat a record can you watch me etc..?
-
I would just contact Funspot before you go and ask when the best time to do it is. That or ask over at Twin Galaxies' forum.
Come on, NY to NH? That's not that far. At least gas has dropped a bit.
-
If they'll let you record inside, you can do a videotaped submission. I think the only games that have to be refereed are the controversial ones like DK.
-
http://wolfmame.marpirc.net/
Get wolfmame106 version for TG. For MARP you can use every wolmame version. And welcome to in World of the Best Players ;)
I will wait for your replay. Remember about right settings for TG. For MARP you can use TG or default game settings. And remember about rules, some are different on TG and MARP.
If you have problem how to use wolfmame then go to MARP board.
-
he's already got wolfmame106 from TG.
-
Yeah, NH is only a couple hundred miles at most. Probably the best time to do it is during their annual tournament.
-
Yeah I'm going to need to read up on wolfmame i was able to get it to create a inp / and wlf file however 2 problems is that MAME 106 to me when playing that game the video seems stretched unlike the "pixel aspect" that i'm used to in 125 /126 MAME and overall the graphics dont seem the same not sure why also when playing back the file I can't seem to see me hitting "tab" in MAME to show what setting's im using for the game to make sure i'm not cheating in anyway :dunno
-
It won't show TAB.
-
MARP Team has special tools to read input config, probably some TG people have this tool too. If not, then it's possible to compare gameplay on different settings.
-
the pixel aspect thing for me is huge , i'm surprised they didnt go with MAME 107 And up yet because that's when that video option was available
-
What video option you want?
-
I think under video options in MAME 125 i set it on Pixel aspect 7:8, I don't think that can be done on MAME 106 which is the accepted version for submitting
-
I think it can. I've surely set different aspect ratios in any version of Mame32/UI and then just copy over a set of vanilla mame files and run mame.
-
Options -> Default Game Options -> Advanced -> Aspect Ratio -> in first field enter 7, in second field enter 8 -> click OK
If you start game and aspect ration still will not be 7:8 then knoiws that you change properties for this game. You must enter to game properties (right mouse click on game).
-
i'm using the command line of wlfmame and i tried going to both TG and MARP forums registered and didn't get my account activated, and even emailed the admins.. i'm still trying to get MAME 106 on my vert monitor to be 7:8 , what do i need to put in the MAME ini file ? in MAME 125 i have it to options>video options>pixel aspect 7:8.. what needs to be done to my mame 106 ini to replicate that
*edit*
now on marp forums
-
When you donloaded zip with wolf106, inside package is command line and GUI version. Run Gui version and change properties, changes will save in ini file and will works in command line version.
mame.ini:
### Windows video options ###
hwstretch 1
screen_aspect 8:7

I know that this has nothing to do with my HS however it's mearly a continuation of my obsession, I finally came across an "Ultracade" machine and played this game.. and with Hyperspin still needing this theme i tried to copy / replicate it
This is my attempt to replicate off the "ultracade" machine Gun Smoke theme

I know that the timing is off, but just messin' around, personally I like my bullits theme the best
this is the actual ultracade machine one:

Manic, dude. You gotta hit up TG.
-
We'll I finally did infact hit up TG, and after submitting a few over 2 million point scores, they did not accept them because I discovered the additional points that you can earn on level one with the flying dragon flies.
-
Congrats.
I thought the rules for all games were single credit only.
-
Not sure about that, but initially the person who reviewed my score thought that the inp was corrupt because of the amount of credits that i was inserting
-
I think it is only one for all games. Makes sense.
-
It's been a while since ive posted an update and I really didn't have a "project announcement" but instead of driving out to NH I decided to build my own conversion / dedicated Gun.Smoke to attempt / and eventually break the Non-MAME version of this game.
So here are some pics of my build :
*Also below was my first attempt at beating the world record ( I got pretty darn close my first try maybe beginners luck!)without any recording devices just wanted to see how different the MAME version was compared to the actual Arcade PCB, and to be honest I almost beat it my first try, I think MAME version is harder but a few variables exist such as different parts (thanks to a combination of Ginsu Victim / Bob Roberts, Tim at jammaboards, Mame Marquees, Ebay, Happ, Chad at Lizardlick & a buncha KLOVers; Killert6969 for the Mr. Do empty cab, falcon for the pcb, thebman for the marquee, and lastly not to mention the list is too long but all the members of BYOAC that helped me along just to mention a few helpers who walked me though a buncha thing and held my hand in the process.. peale, grantspain,Kevin mullens, ken layton.. and any one else i forgot, thank you so much !) joysticks / buttons and even monitors / emulation etc.

I have the record for Clockwork Knight on the Saturn. :) I did last time I checked, anyway.
-
Good game. I need to get back into it. I've never gotten 'round to completing it.
-
What did you use that I sent you? The stick doesn't look like the one I sent.
Yeah I used your wico base / gromet etc and just ordered a nos stick from bob
-
Good game. I need to get back into it. I've never gotten 'round to completing it.
Check your score when you do... let's just say my score is beatable. It's not even my own best score. It is the best score I managed to get on VHS.
-
Even if the score was good, Twin Galaxies wouldn't be happy with me doing a swap trick to load my backup ;D
-
Heh. How do they make people send in scores now, anyway? It can't still be VHS, can it? I know before they wouldn't allow any digital formats because of potential editing.
-
That's a good question as I'm about to start asking because I'm ready ;) I don't know the entire procedure involved other then the correct dipswitch settings, do i need to provide them with the serial on the PCB or video / show the dip switch setting etc. I think DV tapes are allowed from what i read a while ago.
-
Too bad i didn't record this :banghead: , as it was my best score to date and would of been the new world record on a dedicated. "2,240,600".
-
Nice job! Now you have to do it again!
-
!!! Way to go mrclean !!!
Whether or not you officially have the world record, you are a legend in your own mind to the tune of "The good, the Bad and the Ugly".

Nice work, Josh! (How long does the average game take, by the way?)

I just need a program to compress these gigantic 4 gig files while retaining enough quality to fit it onto one dvdr if that's even possible..

yes i know of the "one button" Gun.Smoke machines, basically they had what was called "get well kits" there is a NOS one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/NOS-Gunsmoke-Arcade-Get-Well-Kit_W0QQitemZ220288861891QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 the member on ebay is also "nocashvalue" on KLOV forums, preston also was responsible for getting Gun.Smoke sticker sets reproduced after jeff at rotheblog vectorized / cleaned them up.
More about the 1 button is basically where you walk it fires so to speak, personally i think it's dumb and takes away from the game play I have not really seen many Gun.Smoke cocktails other then in JAPAN it's a conversion but still rare i think i see atari cone buttons hard to tell from that picture.

Not to shabby Ummon, Ive been focusing on setting up Hyperspin on my MAME cab and according to Bill a new update should be out this weekend.
Oh yeah and as for the actual Arcade record according to an email i recieved from Stephen Boyer from Twin Galaxies he said that they don't except JAMMA games ? that makes no sense to me at all, I used a JAMMA adaptor to safely convert the original PCB pinout. I have the record on DVD and will decide who to send it to, Possibly Kelly Flewin in Canada because he was the one that reviewed my MAME record. All i know is that ive beaten the legit arcade record several times and now have one of those runs on dvd, it would really irritate me if they wouldn't except it as ive followed all of the TG rules / settings. I wonder how much money it is to send a disc/jewel case to Canada, from the USA, ive been lazy ive had it for a month already.

It doesn't say anything in the rules about Jamma? I guess the worry there is hacked boards - not that you couldn't hack a real one and they wouldn't likely know the difference. This whole old school video thing is getting ridiculous, though I'm not sure how to rectify it.

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I sent in my actual recording to twin galaxies with the score of 2,192,000 and I neglected to show the PCB in the start of the video so they had declined my submission. After moving into my new house I figured it was time to once again re-submit a run... This time I showed the PCB in the start of the video and got a new High Score of 2,247,650 on the dedicated machine ! Finally after a few months Kelly R. Flewin (A twin galaxies score keeper / reviewer) got back to me, and said;
there's only 1 main hurdle preventing me from getting this taken care of and the hurdle is.. there was no submission form with the record. I checked the case, I checked the package and nothing.
I'd simply need you to use the online submission form for the score of 2,247,650 and print out that sheet and mail it and everything will fall into place.
Outside of that, I wish to informally congratulate you on this incredible record. With the big classic titles coming down, this news is definitely going to be the icing on the cake!
So at this point it's just a matter of printing out that form filling it in, and sending in and then I will finally have both the MAME and dedicated machine records!
Also for those that wish to check out the conversion from the taito cabinet (once was a Mr. Do) be sure to check out my website... HTTP://WWW.GUSCADE.COM

Wow. Congrats! Hopefully they'll announce it on the main TG news page once it's offiicial.

Time to change what's under your name:
"Gun.Smoke - 2,370,650 Dwayne Richard's going down"

Congrats on the record! Yeah, they're picky about not showing the PCB, as you could be running MAME or a modified board or something. On one of your older postings, I definitely know they accept JAMMA games, including older PCB's with JAMMA adaptors. A friend who has a couple records on a cab he built himself (basically looks like a countertop cab). He wired it JAMMA, then bought JAMMA converters for his PCB's. He has the D2K record, and Moon Patrol (until a couple days ago) using it. All those JAMMA converters do is change the pinout of your PCB to fit the JAMMA standard anyway, so there's not really any shenanigans in them.

I see your record is really official now! :applaud: (it's showing up on the scoreboard verified as of 10-7-2009) Congrats!

Thanks! It's funny I would check periodically and finally tonight I just saw it was posted. Again it would not of been possible without BYOAC & KLOV...so thanks again to everyone. Right now i'm focusing on expanding my games / collection, how ever I've never been and I still really want to shoot out to funspot to show off my gun slinging talent. Who knows maybe in May / June of 2010.
