Title: Restorations FAQ
Post by: Level42 on July 29, 2008, 12:00:10 pm
Would it be a good idea to have a restorations FAQ here. I know there are lots of differences with restorations, even with the same games, but there are also a lot of common things as well.

To keep things (relatively) easy to find, I'd suggest that every posting has a header in this format:

BRAND-GAME-TYPE

F.I.: ATARI-MISSILE COMMAND-COCKPIT

What do you guys think ?

I could go for that, but not sure about the hyphens.

What does F.I. mean?

My next two projects are more along the lines of conversions rather than restorations.  Can (should) they be posted in this section.  They won't be using computers running MAME, so I think it still fits.  I'll also be fixing the cabs so there is still a restoration part to it.  I think they fit, but this looks like a good place to ask to  make sure.

Project 1: Black Tiger to Multi-Arkanoid
Project 2: Empty Robotron to Multi-Williams

No and no.  This section is for restorations, not conversions!

This is pure laziness on my part, cuz I certainly could go check.....but....doesn't the WIKI have a resto-FAQ type section?

If not, I suppose a sticky-FAQ could be helpful here.

I thought about that too and checked, and no, it's not there in the Wiki. And yes you are amazingly lazy ;) ;) ;)

Based on the number of Multi-Williams that have been on this section of the forum, I'll ask my questions again.

Hmmmm...good point.  I'm conflicted.  On one hand I want to say those belong in here, and on the other hand it's almost like they belong in PA.

Let's ask Saint.  I'm torn on this one, and I can usually make up my mind pretty quickly.

Wasn't Black Tiger a conversion from Tron?

Two Tigers was the Tron conversion.  Black Tiger was a Jamma game with no dedicated cab.

My opinion is that they belong in here as long as they are using non-mame PCB's.  My Multi-Williams uses the arcadeshop board so I don't think it belongs.  Arkanoids use a real arcade PCB and had no dedicated cab, so a restoration is really into any cab.

Very well.  Consider this the green light.

BUT BE WARNED!    CROSS ME AGAIN AND I WILL DESTROY YOU.

RESTORATIONS - DEDICATED
RESTORAGIONS - CONVERTED

Seems simple enough to me.  Just make another forum.  A Williams Multigame or even a 48-in-1 conversion isn't a "MAME CAB" and shouldn't be in with Project Announcements...regardless of whether MAME is running on that 48-in-1 or not (it certainly isn't on the JROK board).

Is there an actual need to distinguish between the two?  Restoring either is the same work.  Repair the game boards, repair the monitor, restore the cabinet.  Is the distinction of "dedicated or converted" somehow important to that set of tasks?

It seems like semantics, but "to restore" means to put it back to what it was. I think the word "restoration" in the context you're using it, really means repair work. In that regard, there is a difference between repairing to convert, and repairing to restore.

But when you're talking about an original kit, restoration would be whatever cab offers a compatible fit.

We don't have a "repair work" forum either.  We have been using Projects for repairs but a Project around here is technically supposed to be an original build.  If we're going to split hairs like that maybe we should just make a Repair Nonrestorations forum and handle all conversions in there too.  That clears up some stuff from Projects, Arcade Misc, and Restorations.  It gives conversions a place to go, too.

I'm willing to do any of the above, but is there a need?

I don't really think there is...
