Title: Ultrastik 360s good enough for 4-way?
Post by: blind_dado on July 25, 2008, 06:55:42 pm
Building my first control panel, so I'm going to have lots of questions!  I noticed that a pretty standard layout is two 8-way joysticks and a dedicated 4-way at the top, like in NEON mame and derivatives.  But if I use Ultimarc Ultrastik 360s, would I still need a dedicated 4-way.  If the consensus is yes, should I just get another u360 with a restrictor plate, or something else.  If the latter, what's the best dedicated 4-way?

hi rdowney, I'm pasting my answer from a different thread on the exact same subject...

It depends on just how important those 4-way games are to you. Do you plan to try and compete for high scores on those games?...If yes, then I would get a restricted 4-way. If it's just for fun...don't even bother with a dedicated 4way stick, just program the u360 to the appropriate map and you'll be good to go.

This would be the only reason to have a dedicated 4-way sitting next to a u360 IMO...for competitive use. Also, I'm not saying you wouldn't be competitive with a u360 without a 4way restrictor in a 4 way game. They are sweet for way with a round restrictor. Just not 100% ideal or authentic. Before ordering my sticks I was asking myself the same questions as you. I didn't believe that I would be satisfied with a round restrictor on games like pacman and donkey kong. I was wrong, I am satisfied with them for this.
