Title: Can I mount a TT2 with a 7" steering wheel at 90 degrees?
Post by: Diewrecked on July 23, 2008, 04:32:05 am
Hi guys,

I am still trying to design my CP for my Goliath cab (see http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=81999.0 ). You can see a picture of the Goliath cab here - http://www.electrocoin.uk.com/~electrocoin.uk.com/public_html/goliath/ - mine is the Mk3 at the bottom.

I was thinking, would it be possible to mount a TT2 with no top (just the spindle sticking out a few mm) on the vertical part of the CP below the main panel, with a view to putting the "Mini racer" steering wheel on it when I want to play Pole Position (and other driving games)? I seem to remember reading somewhere (maybe on the GGG site?) that the weight of the wheel is what keeps it in place and I'm wondering about how stable it would be in practice mounted at 90 degrees.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance all
Jon

Jon,

While it technically would work, at 90degrees you would be conscious of the wheel slipping off and be constantly compensating.  That would make for a poor gaming experience  (and you wouldn't want it falling on your toe...they are pretty heavy!)

While more complicated, it would make better sense to have an angled mount which you could pop on and off the front of the cab, and/or use a dedicated steering control.

Many thanks for your response Randy.

Given what the CP looks like from the photo at the bottom of the page linked to above do you think I could mount the TT2 right in the rounded corner such that it's at 45 degrees and in the centre? Or would it not mount properly or the shaft of the steering wheel not reach?

Thanks again
Jon

I think you will run into problems mounting it there.  You really need at least a good 1.4" diameter flat in order to get the nut on the body of the spinner.  You might be able to thread it up far enough and tighten into the angle of the sheet metal from behind, but the difficult to say without trying it.

Apologies for resurrecting such an old thread but it's taken this long to get enough free time to be able to work on this project again (one year olds are a lot of work aren't they!!! :) )

As proof of concept i took the original steel CP off my cab and spun it round so it was standing vertical and mounted a Mini Racer onto it. I gave it a good spin and a good workout (albeit not connected) and it was absolutely rock solid. Here's a photo of it, in very blurry motion, mounted vertically. It didn't move even a mm off the spindle during my testing, and I was deliberately clumsy and rough with it.
