Title: Anyone got custom photo wallpaper in the gameroom ?
Post by: Level42 on July 22, 2008, 05:29:58 pm
You can get custom photo wallpaper now. So basically you upload a pic, and you get the rolls that together form a mega-sized picture on the wall. I'm thinking about this for my gameroom. Maybe the Star Wars poster....

Anyone else done this ?

That sample image is freaky!  A 30ft tall baby staring out at you... yikes.

Seriously, though - very cool product... not sure about the price or even the ease of putting it up but I could see someone putting up some awesome game screen captures in their game room.

Jim,

That is the creepiest ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I have ever seen.

I helped put up one of those beach mural things once. Absolute pain in the butt to get the pieces to line up. I will never do another one (and this was working with my uncle, who is a professional painter and wallpaper-er... is that a word?). If it were my room, I would have just ripped it down halfway through and painted the wall a lovely shade of dark red or something. Looks nice when it's up, though!

That kid looks as big as my cat.

Seriously though, that sounds like a great idea. I'm decorating my new house (and hopefully soon a game room), so maybe I will try this too.

A life size version of some in-game shots would be awesome.  Full size Major Havoc, Tempest, Super Mario Bros. or even Impossible Mission from teh C64 would be totally badass.

Jim,

Yeah, I couldn't find any other sample picture other than that one, something I definitely would not choose for...but hey, everybody has a different taste :)

The price is €12,95 per square meter.....(haha, you US guys go figure out how many dollars that is per square feet :) )

It's not very expensive IMHO.

They advice to use only one certain type of wall paper glue. My guess is this is just some kind of photopaper (that's why the certain glue). The bad thing is with normal wall-paper you can screw-up a "lane" (Don't know how you call that guys, one "strip" top to bottom), you just use a new one. This is one shot only I guess.... the lining up must be pretty tough too, but I've also done pattern wallpaper that also needed to be lined up.

Would need a pretty high-res photo to get some decent results, also depends on the size and distance you look at it....

Patrick, a gameroom ?!!? COOOOL :) !

Hey, I was thinking of a cool picture of an actual arcade. So it looks like the gameroom extends beyond that wall... :)

Something like this:

Yeah, I was surprised by that. Guess it's reasonably cheaper because you buy a lot at once. Still wonder about the quality though.

Indeed a picture would degrade a lot when you blow it up that much.

Well, technically a game attic, but still.

That picture is quite cool. You'd need a high res original though. Too bad there are no arcades around to take a picture of  :-\

Sure there are:

But I want classic games in there :) I don't think it would really work out though....

How about this ?

Maybe a bit too busy.....I really think I'm going back to the Atari Star Wars poster idea......

Why redesign the wheel? I think the giant baby mural is perfect for any arcade.

Eric.

This is a bad idea.  Actually, wallpaper of any kind is a bad idea, but this is an especially bad idea.

It would be interesting to see what kind of quality they are capable of putting out at that size from an uploaded photo.  If they had a super crazy hi-res scanner that could be used on an actual photo, then it might be ok.

As it is, it probably looks something like a billboard print process; good from far away, but no so good up close.

And I feel sorry for the kid subjected to that baby scene for any amount of time.

I wish people would stop putting up wallpaper.  Eventually someone with taste is gonna have to pull it down and it's a pain in the ass.

True, but it's no worse than 15 coats of paint.  Once it starts cracking, wall paper is about your only option.

Yes, I agree.  However, there is a website where you can do this yourself as a test.  Maybe you can try this first and then purchase the real deal?  http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/
