In the "new Galaga" thread the discussion seems to move to game music. That made me think, I'm quite into game music. I went to Play! A Video Game Symphony last year and loved it. I've also downloaded some music from ocremix.org (blood on the asphalt is great!). What game has your favorite tunes? It can be (classic) console or arcade. I haven't included the next gen consoles because they have complete teams to compose the music.
My shortlist:
Arcade:
Streetfighter 2
Out Run
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Console:
ActRaiser
Final Fantasy (all of it)
Zelda
Super Mario Bros
Sonic the hedgehog
Streets of Rage
-
Super Mario Bros. is pretty good. But the first thing that comes to mind for me is 1942. Cheesy, yes. But for some reason it just sticks in my mind and I like it.
-
Usually the first level music in POW, Super Contra and Final Fight gets me fired right up. Also the attract sequence in MK2 and Operation Wolf. All around though, the Street Fighter games probably had the most memorable soundtracks for me.
Outside of arcade stuff though, there's a lot of older PC games I can think of that had some amazing music. The Crusader series, the Descent series, any Blizzard game, the Command and Conquer series, Raptor, Rise of the Triad, Heretic, Tyrian, actually most of those old shareware games... Tons of great stuff out there.
-
Arcade:
1944: the music makes you want to shoot all down.
The in between level tunes of Galaga 1988. Perfect 1980's sound-chip tune.
Arkanoid: The perfection of the PONG bleeps.
Console:
Sonic 1&2 for the GameGear (!)
Best game music ever written! These songs are composition-wise way better than the Genesis/Megadrive versions. They stick much better to the head and are like the MegaDrive versions on steroids or Mario after visiting "Extreme Makeover". Unfortunately the sound is crap from the built-in 4-channel-bleep-chip and speaker. But you can find them as .MID on the internet and Quicktime then gives a hint of how these tunes can sound when they end up in some real full orchestra. I hope some conservatory student throws these tracks into some final project some day.
Katamari Damacy series for Playstation 2/PSP
Most ridiculous japan-pop-like music ever written for a game. Katamari on the Moog, Jesus Island, Wanda Wanda, Disco Prince, Scorching Savanna (the pet nursery goes nuts!), Blue Orb, Katamari on the Funk: brilliant
-
Doom music instantly takes me back when I hear it.
Same goes for Street Fighter 2. Guile's theme really gets me pumped.
-
galaga, doom, diablo 2, crazy taxi. they all do it for me.
-

Best arcade song ever. First game using fm synthesis.
-
Good stuff Twin-X, Duracell is awesome, he did a cool Bubble Bobble version too but I cant find the right version anymore.
My favourite game music has to be be from Turrican 2 from the A500
Intro and Level 1

Level 2 (Played by an orchestra)

-
Moon Patrol. An old school porn soundtrack shoved into a space game.
-
This is hardly music but I think Defender (Williams Electronics) has to be some of the
best sounds in gaming history.
;)
-
Gyruss
Frogger
Mountain King (c64) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAvU9xeY5cw
-
I like the Dig Dug music because the music only plays when you are walking. Stutter stepping always makes me chuckle.
Computer game wise, the best music (very catchy) is MONKEY ISLAND!
-
Spy hunter always comes to mind when I think of cool sound tracks..

-
Hhmm... in no particular order.
Console
- Lunar: The Silver Star. (SCD) This game and the opening music are the reasons I ever bought the Sega CD.
- Chakan: the Forever Man. (Genesis) The opening howl and music prompted a lot of my friends to try and "borrow" the cart and get the audio on tape.
- Bubble Bobble. (Arcade) I learned to recognize the music before I knew what the game was. As one of my girl friends used to say, "there's something sweet and sincere about the music."
- Katamari Damacy. (PS2) Blanks explained it best.
- Secret of Mana. (SNES) I've always kind of liked the opening music.
-
Moon Patrol. An old school porn soundtrack shoved into a space game.
I think that was the first video game ever to have "proper" music. I had a Moon Patrol cab at home when they first came out.
To this day I have not been able to get that damn tune out of my head!
-
In no particular order:
Rastan
Darius
Outrun (Magical Sound Shower, original version)
-
Heavy Barrel and Space Harrier
-
Arcade:
720
Rastan
Most of my favorite game tunes are on the c64:
Krakout
The Last Ninja
Aztec Challenge
Beyond the Forbidden Forest
-
Most of my favorite game tunes are on the c64:
Krakout
The Last Ninja
Aztec Challenge
Beyond the Forbidden Forest
Mines too. There were a lot of good composers for that little yet great machine. One of the best was Rob Hubbard, he wrote a lot of loading and ingame tunes. My favourites (not all Hubbard related) are:
Delta (titlescreen and ingame, loader had a mixable tune that I didn't like much)
Last Ninja I and II (great music ingame and between levels),
Bangkok Knights (loading music)
Nemesis The Warlock (loading music)
"Ocean/Imagine Software" Loader (They used the same catchy tune for nearly all their games)
Aztech Challenge and Forbidden Forest (They're still playing in my head ;D)
and what I consider Hubbard's masterpiece: :notworthy:

Gyruss.... No more boops and beeps, but real polyphonic stereo music.
It made such an impression on me, I remember how it felt to play it for the first time, not just what it sounded like.
RandyT
-
While of course I love the good old Mario stuff from the NES, I really liked the soundtrack (especially the opening) from Katamari Damacy.
Bust a Move MVS and Vigilante 8 second offense (N64 version had a way better sound than the PS1 version) are toward the top as well.
-
For me:
Fzero (esp mute city and Big blue)
Zelda 2 dungeon theme
Starfox 1st level theme
Megaman2 (all levels)
plus I am sure plenty more.
here is big blue (Fzero), always get me pumped.

Wizball

On the PC:
Zeliard
Sword of the Samurai
Need For Speed Underground 2
Portal
On the Amiga:

System Shock II
Shenmue
Chrono Trigger (Frog's Theme)
Chrono Cross Opening theme
Bionic Commando
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy series 4,3,7,10
Castlevania
-
Rock Band ;D
Seriously, if we're not just talking classics, I'd probably say Parappa the Rapper. Of the classics, I think maybe Frogger and Super Mario simply because there has never been a moment in the last 20 years when I couldn't hum those tunes on demand. They're permanently etched in my brain. I'd probably also include the original Zelda overworld theme and some of the Metroid stuff.
-
Hmmm, most have been mentioned: Gyruss, Space Harrier, outrun and Moon Patrol. For some reason, Popeye never got old for me, so it would get my vote.
Although next gen consoles don't count, I assume the original Xbox is ok then? If so, then Halo is near the top of the list. I'm not a big fan of the game itself (I do like it but not a lover of it) BUT that theme music is just outstanding...
... and these guys are incredible :)

-
I'm surprised that my favourite hasn't been mentioned yet,
Contra!!

also this guy is amazing....

-
FInally,I saw someone say Paperboy.
That music gets caught in my head and it's rediculous.
Also, ghosts and goblins. There's a solo in the song "Like a Stone" that sounds JUST like the c64 version of G&G.
-
go to the torrents and look for nintendo music. I grabbed 200 of the best NES tunes.
Great stuff. Goonies music is great
-
Necro bump! Was going to start a new thread, but look! This one was already here. :)
Played Rygar for the first time this weekend (crazy, huh?). I gotta say, I really love the music in this game. It really pulled me in! There aren't many arcade games that have music that stands out to me, but Rygar's has been playing in my head for the past several days.
-
Well since you've bumped it, why not jump in.
Shadow of the Beast for the Genesis:
Awesome game music
I'm also a big fan of Moon Patrols music
-
Quake 2
I still listen to this "album" on a regular basis.
The 7th Guest
Another early favorite of mine.
-
Gyruss, "I get goose bumps when the bassline thumps.." 8)
-
I can't believe no one mentioned PHOENIX!
-
Gyruss, "I get goose bumps when the bassline thumps.." 8)
Oh yes!!
One my favorite games too and one reason I'm glad I have a sub in my cab
-
I love the music from Bomb Jack. Retro all the way. I even had the attract mode as my ringtone for my significant other. :-)

Outrun - Splash Wave
Outrun 2 - Splash Wave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjpXhmaMKZg#)
The new dubstep remix in Sonic Racing Transformed is a bit too far from the original for my tastes.
-
First song that came up to me:
Carmageddon
Iron Maiden - Be Quick Or Be Dead
But thats not really game music, so the second that came up:
The Neverhood
(http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/3606/207826-neverhood02.jpg)
-
Quake 2
I still listen to this "album" on a regular basis.
The 7th Guest
Another early favorite of mine.
the 7th guest soundtrack was amazing.. the fat man is awesome!
I also enjoy anything from konami (castlevania especially), Metroid, F-zero, and Capcom Games
-
If you can take the same few songs by the offspring and bad religion played over and over again, then the Crazy Taxi music is pretty cool
-
There is too many good old video game tunes.
I'm just going to mention some that I haven't seen mentioned. ARCADE: The Intro music in Real Bout: Fatal Fury. CONSOLES: Intro music to Mega Man 3 for the NES. The default Tetris music for the NES. Most of the music in Chrono Trigger for the SNES. To name only a few.
-
+1 for Xenon 2 on the Amiga for me - Amiga Intro - Xenon 2 - Bitmap Brothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w-tiRnac2k#)
Awesome music. The Amiga sounds great even today and this was perfect for the game. When I loaded it up again on WinUAE recently it still blew me away - I was expecting it to sound tinny by today's standards but no way!
-
F-zero - Fire Field
www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NWy7Tr48wI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NWy7Tr48wI)
gnat attack - level 3 ... but has to be on a first revision SNES. It had a separate bass enhancement board built in to boost subsonic frequencies. this song is bangin' on a couple of 15's. Later revision SNES's went with a different all in one chip and the bass is all crunchy.
Mario Paint Music - Gnat Attack 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7caRTH5BbA#)
-
Way too many but my top tunes have to be
Arcade - kung fu master (massively repetitive but takes me back!), rtype, moon patrol (again), shinobi and splash wave from outrun
C64 - cybernoid, sanxion
Amiga - turrican 1 and pinball dreams
Atari st - exolon. No question this is my favourite tune ever.
-
Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar (",)
-
I'm gonna come off as a c64 snob here, but I'm convinced that the c64's beautiful analog filter sid chip was leagues ahead of any other console back in the day. Martin Galway is my probably my fav of the c64 composers. I dare you to just take 5 minutes to listen to this stuff. It is brilliant.
Parallax Title Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8LEA23R-Nc#)
Comic Bakery Commodore 64 Loader Tune (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf29ShkoAiA#)
Martin Galway - Wizball (C64) [Title Music] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFYzjU-C3mA#)
Other favs on the c64:
Samurai Warrior Usagi Yojimbo
The last V8
Commando (Much better than the arcade theme)
Terramex (Cosmic Relief)
Maniac Mansion
-
ROADRASH!!!!
-
It may have been mentioned but how about Outrun.
I remember thinking how cool it was that not only is there force feedback (a first) but also the whole car stereo thing that let you choose the music track was really cool.
-
Gravitar. I put it on occasionally just for the thump. Pure 8-bit evil.
-
Golden Axe – Arcade and Genesis
Altered Beast – garbage game, but love the music, especially title screen and first level
Dragon Spirit – arcade
Batman – Genesis – title screen and first level are great
Double Dragon – arcade
Super Mario Bros. 2 – NES (I’m one of “those guys” who holds this as his favorite Mario title of all time)
By all rights I suppose I should be “nostalgic” about NES music, but nowadays I usually find it more annoying than anything else.
For whatever reason, I’m finding I generally prefer music on the original Gameboy over the NES. I picked up an original B&W Gameboy for cheap a while back and played all the way through Super Mario Land for the first time in almost 25 years. I was kind of surprised at how well the music fits the game and adds to the experience. I didn’t notice such things back when I had these games originally.
-
LOL, I've thought about it some more and thought of a few more games with awesome music I love...
title sequence of double dragon on the gameboy - it's got that 80's feel to it. i catch myself humming this one sometimes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6MDf3ai8ho (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6MDf3ai8ho)
legend of zelda ocarina of time overworld. This is my alarm I wake up to in the morning. It's fabulous. give it a listen all the way through...most people only spend 30 seconds to a minute hearing the song before gameplay changes the music on you...

dr wilys stage from megaman 2. super catchy. deliciously complex.

Pheonix and Frogger were I think the first real music-endowed games.
Classic-wise, my favorites are Gyruss, Moon Patrol, Pooyan (probably the most sophisticated original music of the period), Marble Madness (barely a Classic) - and, not mentioned yet, Xevious. Most of these were in '82, hence contenders, though Xevious is perhaps the quintessential music game, because it's barely music, and yet no diatonically lame.
OH, and Gunsmoke, which was '84!
Mid-to-late 80s: Outrun, Black Tiger, Indy, 1943....what else.......
90s, mmmmmm, Strikers1945 stands out.
@Vigo: dude, is that a chorus of gnats farting music?......
@lilshawn: well, not really. That basic minor key 'hey it's a tragic adventure coming' kind of thing (I think both Raiden and Twin Cobra have it), that...sad as *---fudgesicle---* to say.....is the common harmonic deal in all the kiddie metal in the last ten years....and has no sign of giving up. BLECH.
-
PCE Dracula X for consoles... fantastic music.
Maybe my top pick.
Also:
Sonic 2
Final Fantasy VI
Donkey Kong Country
Suikoden 1/2
-
@Vigo: dude, is that a chorus of gnats farting music?......

Still amazed that no one else has mentioned Ecco: Tides of Time. I'm not sure if it's an original composition, but it's very moving.

If not just talking classics,
I've been playing Braid and the music on that game is just so not usual game music that I love it.
Also I love the music in Machinarium.
-
Also I love the music in Machinarium.
dude, i forgot all about that. i'm going to fire that game up right now.
in the interest of modern gaming, Metroid prime on the gamecube has some FANTASTIC music. sets the mood right up.
-
Maniac Mansion for c64
-
The absolute best game music ever has to be Monty on the run (C64).
The next best though has to be Wizball also on the C64. Here is me playing it on my keyboard:
Wizball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCavCITPrmg#ws)
-
The Elder Scrolls series by Jeremy Soule. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. That guy's amazing
-
Good to see more C64 love. Monkey, great wizball! :applaud:
-
I am putting in another vote in for Rastan - pretty epic stuff.
-
Menace for the Amiga.
It was the first Amiga game I purchased.
The stereo blew me away, compared to the mono sound I was used to on the C64. That, and the gorgeously coloured landscapes.
The intro. shown in the YouTube clip below gives you the flavour of the game's sound, but not the full picture ... there are extra sound elements within the game that aren't shown in the clip :
[Amiga Paula ripped out] Menace Intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTY879GBzuY#)
-
Salamander (arcade) - particularly one called Starfield, pumping soundtrack to kill aliens to. Composer was born same year as me too :)
Outrun (arcade)
Loads of others I can't think of at moment
