Title: FS: Various Coin Doors
Post by: SirPeale on June 06, 2003, 06:27:21 pm
Note, that all these doors came off machines that were on location.  Some have 'pry' marks around their locks, but it's not noticable until you open the door.

*update * All current doors have been sold.  Check back later for more additions.

Heh...if you had kids within the last five years, you might recognize it.

It's called a 'Boppy' pillow.  It's shaped like a horseshoe.  It's made to go around the torso so you can put the baby on the pillow.

Later, when they get bigger, they can lie on it, within the horseshoe, with the ends supporting their body.

WWAaaaaaaaaaaa gasps for air ehaaaaaaa !!  You're probably snickering to yourself knowing what I'm about to go through since you been there. :)

Been there twice.  The second wasn't nearly as bad.

And it's not bad.  You just have to reprioritize.  I've got several cabinet projects going right now.  My 9 month old loves my completed one.

All doors I have for sale are posted in the first message in this thread.  When I sell a door, I first make it lined out to keep the pics on the board for a time.  When I receive payment, I remove the instance of that item.

Right now I have a Williams style coin door for sale, but I haven't listed it yet.  I finished cleaning and reworking the mechs last night.  I didn't want to post it before I was done.  I'll put the pics up tonight.

And, of course, thanks for your words of encouragement, guys.  I try very hard to describe exactly what you're looking at.

Wade: I'm glad you got your door.  I hadn't heard anything in a few days, and was beginning to worry.  If you look at the microswitches you'll note that I lay them down so I could fit the door in the box.  BTW - how did the box hold up?  I had to custom build it to fit the door.

Modifyed OP to detail current doors.

The 1/2 door MAY be going back 'on the block' so to speak, as the bloke who stated he was going to send money hasn't, and I haven't heard from him either by email, or by PM.

Peale,

The box held up just fine.  I noticed the switches were loose but I didn't know why.  A few parts of the mechs were loose but it really didn't matter since I took it all apart immediately to strip the paint.  I have almost finished painting it.  It should look as good as new when I'm finished with it! (not that it looked bad before, but my cabinet is mint so the coin door needed to look brand new as well)

I don't know anything about mechs, but I'm praying I can adjust those to use .900 tokens.  I just bought 500 for $15 just to use in my games!

The mechs themselves were likely loose from the shipping, which is to be expected.  I'm eager to see before and after pictures.

Got both mechs working with my tokens... now I'm having problems getting a uniform paint finish.  Gonna have to try another brand of paint I guess.

That would be because although I've got a bunch of doors, I haven't fixed any up yet.  I've got a Williams in the works right now.  Keep your eye peeled on this thread.

I hate to bump an old thread, but I think Peale has been editing the first post as he has new doors to sell.

Peale has been one of the best sellers I have ever dealt with. Despite my coin door being lost or stolen somewhere between points A and B, he still managed to get me a door. He actually drove out to my house and delivered a new one. I can't recommend buying from him enough, my safer than buying off of eBay.

Heh, actually that would be both cool and scary. All these people with a shared interest in arcades, it would be like a ghetto Arcade Con ;D . However, my dad would definately kill me as a result, which means I'd never be able to install that nice coindoor. :'(

Okay, finally took some shots of the refinished coin door!  After many tries I finally got a finish I am happy with.

Unfortunately, I had to cut a slightly larger hole which resulted in some paint damage to the wood.  I'll just have to repaint that panel, no big deal.

Nice!  What did you use, Rust-oleum texture paint?  If I'd known about that stuff before I started work on your door, I would have used it.
Title: Re:FS: Various Coin Doors
Post by: Wade on August 27, 2003, 01:47:15 pm
Well, repainting it was a long process for me...

It had been repainted before so I decided to start by disassembling it stripping it.  I used some of that spray on paint remover found at auto stores.  I think it was called Tal-Strip.  That stuff works really well, just let it sit awhile.  A little time with a steel brush got the tough areas.

I primed it all with flat black sandable primer.  I originally planned to paint it all with that but I couldn't get a uniform finish.

I used some automotive semi-gloss on the raised bezels and return flappers.  This turned out surprisingly well (I usually don't have much luck getting semi-gloss or gloss black to look good at all).  I decided to leave well enough alone and leave the parts as they were.

Since the flat black didn't work out on the large parts, I tried flat black sandable primer a few times with no luck on consistency.

Finally, I tried some wrinkle paint from the auto store.  It wasn't rustoleum but I'm sure that brand is probably even better.  It took me several tries to get it to turn out.  Then I reassembled it and added the locks and it literally looks like new.  Only thing that shows any wear at all is the red plastics, if you look very closely.

Here's what I found with the wrinkle paint, after a half dozen coats that didn't work:

Paint the part very heavily.  I mean REALLY heavily.  Then lay the part flat so there are no runs.  Then set it outside in the direct sunlight.  Within an hour you should have plenty of wrinkle.  I tried using a hair dryer like they suggest on the can, but it never worked for me.  The only thing that worked was really heavy paint and direct, hot sunlight.

Once I figured out that trick, I fell in love with the finish.  I'm going to use it on all sorts of things.

Be sure to let the wrinkle paint dry for SEVERAL days, maybe even a week.  It isn't very durable during that time, I guess it takes a long time to cure fully since I put it on so thick.  But once it is fully cured, it is quite durable, at least as durable as regular paint.  I'm glad I decided to try that stuff!

I tried going the wrinkle paint route as well, and probably got results like your first five tries.

Then I found Rust-oleum texture paint.  I figured, for $4.00 a can, if it sucks, I never have to buy it again.

Let me tell you, $4.00 is too little for this stuff.  It works great!  It's about as close to original as you can get without powder coating.
Title: Re:FS: Various Coin Doors
Post by: Wade on August 27, 2003, 04:54:31 pm
Yeah I'd be ticked off if I had bought all those paints I tried.  All of them were stuff I had around the garage except the wrinkle paint, which was a last resort and close to $6.

One other thing, there were a few small dents on the upper coin door which showed up with shinier paints, but the wrinkle stuff hid it totally.  I love this stuff!!  I might try the Rustoleum some time as well.

Now to finish the speaker panel...  though I'm getting close to just ordering grills to cover the holes instead of routing slots.

Yeah, wrinkle paint is deathly expensive.  That's why I'm loathe to use any more, without having something special to use it on.

Wrinkle paint doesn't take any longer to dry than other paints.  But you have to get three really thick coats on to give it uniform wrinkle.

Peale,

Do you still have a bunch of coin mechs?  I need to convert a few games to tokens and I thought it might be worth it to just buy some.  I know you were selling them pretty cheap.  I need them for .900 23mm tokens.  Do you still have them?

Thanks,

Indeed I do!  Imonex coin mechs.  The price has gone up a tad, though.  They're $10 each shipped.  Even Bob Roberts sells these for $12, shipping NOT included.

I thought yours were used and you were selling them for about $3?  I think $10 each is too high for me, Bob sells the Happ ones for only $9.

I was looking to spend just a few bucks each rather than tinker with the ones I have, but if I can't get them really cheap I'll jus do the latter.

They are used.  AFAIK, so are the ones from Bob Roberts.  I don't think $10 shipped is an unfair price.

You might be better suited to tinkering with the ones you already have.

the mech I have currently installed is adjustable -- it was using tokens, but the coin door was slotted for quarters.  I'll track down my digital camera to get a picture of it.  I can at least give you the brand though...  it's a ... hmm.  =)  It was manufactured in oldham england, so sayeth the metal engravings (stern coin door, that mean anything?).  It has a sticker on it that says "coin controls <symbol> elk grove, IL, USA".  Anyhow.

I'll be using tokens that are slightly larger than quarters.

What really cheap ones do you still have available?  I could still use some.

Just quarter mechs.  Not sure how many I have.  Most of them are going in to other doors, unless someone wanted token mechs instead.
