Is there a special add-on or an application, possibly web based, that I could use to co-browse websites with my friend? So that I could see the contents of my friends screen, when he's surfing the web.

You could use one of the VNC versions. There are plenty free versions of this available. Like RealVNC (http://www.realvnc.com/), Ultra VNC (http://www.uvnc.com/index.html) and Tight VNC (http://www.tightvnc.com/). Personally I use Real VNC. I tried Ultra VNC recently and it killed the performance of the server (90% CPU load), but on desktops it seems to work fine. So I kept using Real VNC.
Then there are several webbased solutions where you share your screen to a webbrowser application. I use GotoMeeting (http://www.gotomeeting.com/) a lot and a client of mine uses RemotelyAnywhere (http://www.remotelyanywhere.com/). These are pretty expensive though.
