Title: SlikStik Overlays Now Available on Mameroom Controllers
Post by: Mameroom on July 13, 2008, 06:24:02 pm
Mameroom Designs now has the SlikStik overlays available for our controllers.  We also have several new designs.  Our new website currently has only the new blue lightning overlay features, but we will have all of the designs on our website shortly.

Clear plastic covers also available.

Looks nice, but for that price you really need to ditch the trackball mounting plate.

We can mount the trackball flush by routing out underneath the control panel and mounting the trackball without a plate...however, we would not be able to offer the clear plastic cover with this option as it would create "pinch-points" around the trackball.

A flush-mount trackball option will come shortly.  We wanted to first nail down designs and get something out there.

We will also be offering illuminated controls as a standard option.  Right now, illuminated controls are done on a custom basis.

Wow, it looks great....I too wish there was no mounting plate. :(

When do you think you will be launching the flush-mount option?

Also, if one were to order one of these bad-boys, how quick would the turn around time would be?

Thanks!

Thanks...Current turn around time is 1 week.  The flush-mount option will be available in the next couple of weeks...but the clear plexiglas cover will not be an option on the flush mounts.

agreed- up the price and route it out- keep the plexi and use a high lip tb to avoid pinch points.  Also might consider lipped t-molding to avoid the screw holes around the cp.

Overall though not a bad price.  Considering the controls and materials are more than half the cost of the unit.  that is if it comes with a controller... Does it come equipped with an ipac or keywiz?

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, I will look into those.  The prototype for sale has a keywiz, but our Classic controllers will have IPACs in the near future.

Alternatively you could keep the plate but flush-mount it by routing the top of the panel. This way there are no pinch points (if I understood correctly what was meant by that).

Why not?  My control panel has a plexiglass cover and flush mounted trackball?  I am a little confused as to these "pinch points"?  The plexi sits flush with the plastic trackball rim...if you cut the plexi nice it provides a nice transition from plexi to plastic rim to ball.  If you're that worried simply round the plexi slightly with a router?

EDIT: BTW,  by purchasing these "SlikStik" designs,  are folks contributing to the coffers of the person who allegedly stole money from more than one person of this community?

What happened to the fighter unit with the dual joysticks?  It's not on your site anymore.  But can you make just about any layout as a custom?  Also, what type of joysticks/buttons do you use?  Happ?  Other?  I'm definitely going to be buying one of these once you get the flush mount worked out.  And I have to agree that it would be better if there were no screws showing.   :)

Making the trackball flush mounted would mean the rim or lip surrounding the actual ball would be flush with the top of the panel.  Adding plexiglas would mean the trackball would sit lower than the top of the plexi.  It may actually be insignificant and not as important as I'm making it out to be.

No. The overlay designs were merely the same ones previously offered by SlikStik.  We simply are offering them on our panels.

The fighter style unit is still available as a "Customized" version of the Classic.  We use happcontrols competition joysticks and buttons.

Regarding the plastic cover screws...we could leave these off entirely as they really are not necessary.  The controls typically hold the plexi in place...the screws merely prevent the edges from coming up.

Regarding the flush mount and pinches... You can see right in the picture of your trackball that there is a lip around the ball.
If you route the wood for the plate (1/16" ?), put the plate in, then put 1/8" plexi over it, that lip around the ball will be flush with the top of the panel. Done that way, the transition from ball lip to plexi is seamless.

One week turnaround time?  Wow that is amazing.  Arcades R Fun is cheaper (prior to the discount) and they have flushmounted trackballs but if you can really churn out product in that time frame - your a great option.  Doest you panel top "flip up" to expose the guts?  I cant tell from the pictures if your panels have a hinge on the front.
Title: Re: SlikStik Overlays Now Available on Mameroom Controllers

We originally intended to mill out the bottom of the control panel to mount the trackball without a mounting plate...like we currently do for the 1.5" trackballs

My only concern with milling the top and countersinking the trackball plate/mounting kit is:

1) If using a mounting kit, there are 4 slightly raised rounds where the welded threaded rods are (in the 4 corners).  The overlay would bubble up over these and not look very professional.

2) If we use just the mounting plate, there would be the 4 carriage bolt head visible on the top of the panel (which may be just as undesirable)

In both cases, There is a .01 tolerance on our CNC equipment.  This means that the countersunk area for the plate could be .01" too shallow or too deep creating an inconsistant surface for the overlay to stick to...and would be visible.  For this reason alone, we would prefer to milling from the bottom.

Yes, currently a one week turn around.  Arcade R Fun is a great manufacturer for control panels...as are many of the other vendors.  Each one of us offers different options at different prices.  If we all offered the exact same products at different prices...you would, of course, have to go with what's cheapest...they are, afterall, made from many of the same components...we are trying to stand out from the crowd with our selection of overlays and design layout.

I can tell you that our options will become cheaper in the future once we become more established in the "complete controller" market.  We still have not gone "mainstream" since the issues with SlikStik, we are still in the process of updating our website...but we are very close.

Also, regarding the prototype controller for sale...shipping is included in the price provided that it is shipping within the continental US.

Are you concerned with the lack of material left holding things together? That setup with a 3" ball looks like it'd be pretty weak. Maybe the trackball housing could be supported from underneath into a meatier part of the panel as well.

Yes, this is exactly why it is taking longer to release the flush mount trackball option.  We are looking into using an l-bracket support system underneath the panel.

I was in the process of packaging up the prototype for when it sells and noticed that the overlay was not cut properly on the left side in one area.  It is slightly larger than the top of the control panel and pushing against the t-molding causing it to bubble in this area.  It is still covered with the plexi overlay.

I do not feel like taking it all apart to correct this minor issue, so it is now $35 off to sell it as-is....if anyone on byoac is interested.

UPDATE:  Prototype Sold!

I bought a SlikStik 4 player control panel and I want to switch to a 2 player. I already have their flush mounted trackball. Do you have a 2 player option that can work with what I already have?

Here is a new overlay.  It is a Red version of the lightning.

This controller also showcases illuminated controls fitted with RGB led's.  So the color can be changed to anything you want.

With Flash:

Without Flash
(http://www.mameroom.com/images/RedIllumQuad2.jpg)

We also removed the black screws holding the plastic down and offset the t-molding groove, so the tmolding is now holding the edge of the plastic in place.

We have a flush mount trackball from Ultimarc on order and have had all of our overlays modified to remove the plate.

I will definitely be getting one of these in the future.

Frizzle, I reckon it's time to ease up on the witch-hunt of all things related to Christian.

You were giving Andy the third degree the other day, just because he still offers his old stockpile of SlikStik knobs with his SpinTrak spinner.    :dunno

Now Scott's getting the third degree too.

Christian's a real slimeball, and sure there were people burnt by the SlikStik debacle, but you kinda miss the "energy" he generated when he was around ... he was the villain that everyone loved to hate.  Hell, he added a bit of drama value to the forum.    ;D

He's rightly suffered through the demise of SlikStik, and the resulting permanent damage to his reputation.  He was wholly responsible for his own downfall, and has no-one but himself to blame.  Hopefully the State Attorney General is still chasing him for the money he owes.

Surely that's punishment enough.

What's it matter if the guy earns some dime for himself, by selling some lousy spinner knobs, or panel overlays ?

Everyone needs to "make a crust" somehow, we all have to eat.

If he's forced into unemployment, he'll just be drawing welfare cheques from the U.S. Government ... shall you then be giving "Uncle Sam" the third degree for paying him welfare from your tax dollars ?

Methinks it's time to show a bit of mercy, and put this to rest.

Finished up the flush mount prototype using Ultimarc's new trackball...and I must say it is a great piece of hardware.  Very easy to install and feels like the Happ trackballs we've been using.

Although, I did not read the mounting instructions before cutting out the control panel top and plastic cover.  The trackball mounts using threaded inserts (into the wood) so nothing protrudes up through the top of the panel (very nice option)...so, unfortunately, the prototype has these holes pre-drilled and are visible from the top of the panel, due to our mistake.

So we are selling this one (much like the other one) at a discount for $650 ($50 Off):

Includes:
-Tornado Spinner
-Illuminated Blue (Flushmount) trackball
-Blue Lightning overlay
-Clear Plexiglas cover

Please PM me if interested (or send email to sales@mameroom.com).

Here's another one we are trying to get rid of...miscommunication with customer, it has dark blue t-molding instead of red:

-Illuminated Red Trackball
-Tornado Spinner
-Red Lightning Overlay

Actually,  I think I questioned Scott regarding this overlay before I asked Andy about the spinner tops... this is just a little bit of an older thread that has resurfaced...

...and the flush mounting looks 100000x better Scott.

Is that a blue translucent Happ trackball?  I know that Andy does not offer a blue ball option with the u-track.  Have you worked out a lighting option for the u-trak?  If so, I'd be interested in seeing some pictures of the blue translucent lit up.  And wouldn't mind seeing some closer pictures of the bezel around the ball as well.  But the panel looks phenomenal, and so much better then the one with the screw holes and mounting plate.  Yeah!

Thanks for all the feedback.

I replaced the ball that came with the Utrak with a translucent blue happ ball.  I also installed a blue Ultra bright LED underneath the ball...as we currently do with all of our illuminated trackball options.  I'll see if I can get some close up shots in the next day or two.

The photo with the lights out and the control panel all lit up is awesome.  I don't even mind the top mounting bracket.

If I could only make up my mind with what to do with my golden tee 99 cabinet.  It doesn't get any play other than me playing it.  Everyone else wants to play wii or rock band on ps3.

One of these panels would look great swaped out but then I need to do a whole bunch of other stuff and I just don't have the time to devote to it.  New born and another one on the way.  So you can tell I been busy in more ways than one.
