I just put together a PC for an arcade machine I'm helping a friend build.
The motherboard BIOS had an option to "Power on After Power Fail".
I set it and tested it last night.
I shut the PC down and un-plugged it. When I plugged it back in, the power immediately turned on and the thing booted right up.
I un-plugged it for the night and this morning it did the same thing!
This should eliminate the extra momentary switch like the one I have in my cab. I know a number of people have hacked up a power-up scenario that doesn't need the extra switch, but this one requires nothing as far as I can tell.
The motherboard is a Shuttle AV49N.

This defienitely can make it easier for a 1-switch power solution
Ive got a supermicro ssa370(i think thats the model) that also does this, and my TV also has auto power on. Everythings plugged into one strip, weh I hit the switch it all lights up

it cant be healthy to a computer to keep killin the power while its running htough, can it?

We're not killing the power while it's running.
We are simply "turning off" the power strip AFTER shutting down the PC.

i was under the impression that it only booted back up after a power failure,like killin thepower.

I thought most newer mb will do this...
check in your bios.... (I believe this was mentioned before...)
when you boot your machine.... press F1 or del or whatever to go to the bios setup...
check the options.... (I think its "power"...)
then they have like boot machine by key press / mouse click / options...
also... reboot when power resume option....
stuffs like that.....

Im running 98, and I just flip the main switch. Its not like a typical environment where stuff is constantly being buffered to write to disk, all my configs are saved(and duplicated across the network in case of grave catastrophe) and dont change. When doing upgrades I'll shut it down properly and reboot to make sure settings get written correctly but normal use is
1. hit the main switch, watch the pretty lights
2. play
3. hit the main switch, watch the darkness

I wouldn't feel so comfortable with that option. Just me i guess.
I'd rather rig up a button config to go into shutdown and power off automatically

I have a Dell Optiplex Gx110 and when you hit the power button to turn it off, it shuts windows down for you. COOL! Now I just have to think through how to wire the PCB switch to the cabinet when I finish it......
Oh... BTW.... !!!! THANKS Birdtales for the Cabs and stuff....
Getting the paint off these things is killing my arm... LOL

I also have a....crap....it might be a supermicro....anyhow, whatever it is...same option.
Before I shut down the cab, I shut down windows.
Then I reach around and kill the power on the strip.
So long as you dont turn it on again immediately...give it a minute or two, when you go back and throw the switch on the powerstrip, everything boots up as normal.

Even most of this is old hat let me chime in the following:
Most newer mobo's should have that power on after power failure option
Some frontends (minwah, others with a little utility) can shutdown windows/machine/etc when you exit the front end.
while we are on the topic... powering up your cabinet with 1 button can also be done doing a relay circuit, or by buying a fancy powerstrip (the easiest to find is the 20 dollar one at sears) that when you power up your PC it turns on your monitor power/marquee light/other aux power...
