Whats up everyone?
Yesterday I picked up a non-dedicated Soul Caliber game in a dynamo cab. Metal CP, marquee light, work as well as the coin mechs so I'm extremely happy. However, the monitors colors are way off and even after adjusting some switches and checking the wires, nothing seems to fix it. The monitor itself is a 25' inches and about 16 years old. I know that it's a very good candidate for a Cap Kit but here is where the problem lies. It's a Zenith tube and I'll assume I will need Zenith Cap kits in order to properly fix it. Do they still make Zenith Cap kits or can I buy another brand that would be compatible. Thanks for any and all help in advanced.
I will post pics of the monitor tonight when I get off from work.

Sorry in my excitement to fix the monitor I missed that topic. By reading that I can safely assume that it's not a Zenith Cap kit I need. Pity I don't get off until 6PM tonight (stupid overtime haha.)
-
I'm betting it's a K7000. And yes, parts are available and plentiful.
-
OK so now that I'm home it looks like the label on the chassis was removed by someone, BUT someone conveniently wrote k7000 on it. :applaud:
So Peale good call on the type of monitor. Here are some pictures of the problem, it's more of a brightness problem and a slight hue issue. It's not TOO bad for Soul Calibur but when I hooked up MSHvsSF the colors were WAAAAYYY off and its really noticeable. So I'm going to order a cap kit which should fix the problem (unless anyone else has a different diagnoses,) but I was wondering if I decide to replace the Fly back transformer what benefits would I see. Thanks.
-
Why would you replace your flyback? It's clearly working.

Though I'm good with electronics (I replaced the suicide battery on my CPS2 board myself,) I have no knowledge on monitors aside from what I have been reading on these forums. Anyway, I plan on ordering a cap kit since it's only $8 dollars and I'm pretty certain that should fix it. Thanks for the help Peale.

just looks like a very badly adjusted monitor to me,just adjust the colours and brightness/contrast

Yea I did toy around with it when I first got it. It was extremely blurry and had a bad green ghosting effect at first, but as you can see I took care of that. When I get home tomorrow I'll finally be able to sit down and actually tweak it some more. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
-
*UPDATE* I finally had time to tweak with the monitor and it looks a lot better.
I included before and after photos the only thing is the picture is still a little dim, and the greens are a little off. But I'll live on with my project. Thanks for all the advice.

There is a problem with the green gun or green circuit. This is why you are getting bad colors! Swap the Green wire with Red or Blue, and see if any green comes in. If this works, there is a problem with the wiring or gameboard. If not, there is probably a problem in the monitor with the green circuit, or the green gun of the picture tube is bad.
-
Agreed that your green is not right.
Soul Calibur should have a color bar screen in the test menu (under display test) that you can use to adjust with.
As for the dim-ness..... you could bump the SCREEN voltage up a hair on the flyback if the brightness and contrast aren't enough.
Note: One knob is FOCUS and one knob is SCREEN

Good news.....I managed to play around with the settings some more and the greens look a lot better. When testing MSHvsSF when I first started Hulk was a dark green (he's supposed to be a light green) and with some adjustments everything is A OK.

Thanks for this advice I upped the voltage slightly and while it did make the screen brighter it made the colors look washed out so I set it back, thanks for bringing that to my attention though. I also have toyed with the test settings in Soul Calibur, I haven't made much progress with it yet though.

when you say swap the wires, exactly where are they located. I noticed a plug just beyond the purity yoke on the tube that looks like a wire goes there, and it's not so I tried to spot a stry wire but couldn't find any. When I get a moment tomorrow (working at the moment) I will post detailed photos. Thanks as always
-
By swapping the wires he means the color input wires coming from the game board.
(see attached pic)
Since you seem to be able to get green now, then it's probably just a combination of weak tube effects and adjustments.
A rejuvination could possibly brighten all the colors and the dimness in general.
But...... it could also kill the guns as well.
A TV repair might have the equipment to do this. Really only some of the old timer repairmen still do this sort of thing.
All in all it doesn't look bad.

Here is the photo of the tube. If you look closely it looks as if its missing a wire of some sort (can anyone verify this please.) Also here is another photo and one of the caps has gunk on it so I will def. do a cap kit. To make sure it's not the board thats displaying off colors I stuck MSHvsSF in my Neo Geo cab.
-
There is no wire missing on your deflection coil or else your picture would not cover the screen. The gunk on the cap is just glue used to stabilize the component.

Just an update.
I ordered the Cap Kit from Lizard Lick (great site) and it should arrive today at the house. Discharged the monitor last night removed the neck board and chassis, and will do the cap kit at work tonight. Result will be posted soon wish me luck.
