Title: CHD titles
Post by: Aceldamor on July 09, 2008, 02:30:56 am
Any mods or anything out there that will speed up chd titles? Right now i'm getting about 52% from Gauntlet Dark Legends, which is one of my favorite modern titles. I would like to speed it up if possible.

Just Curious.

Thanks,
Ace.

I see two  things you could do:

1) Obtain a faster CPU

and/or

2) Upgrade operating system to 64-bit (XP64, Vista 64, Linux) and use builds designed to take advantage of this architecture.  This is assuming you are using a CPU that can support 64-BIT applications.

To get a decent idea on what kind of differences each one would make, John IV made quite a nice benchmarking list with difference configurations and build types.

Not all CHD games are slow.  The biggest reason a lot of them are is because of the hardware needed to emulate for those games, not the fact that they are on in a CHD container.

You'll need a pretty beefy system to get Dark Legends running.  The arcade hardware was pretty powerful stuff so you need a home system that's even more powerful than that.  (Remember, the rule of thumb is that to emulate a CPU you need a CPU that runs 50 times faster.  If the arcade CPU ran at 200 MHz, then you need a CPU at least 1.0 GHz to emulate just that one CPU.  If multiple chips were used, then you need more CPU power to handle those chips as well, in addition to all the overhead involved with the communication systems etc. )
