Title: Mortal Kombat Dedicated Sideart - Progress
Post by: gsoul on July 01, 2008, 10:51:04 am
Hey guys, some of you may have seen a post I made about this a year or so ago on BYOAC. The sideart on my Mortal Kombat machine is kind of tatty, and I nor anyone on BYOAC have been able to find reproduction MK Dedicated sideart anywhere. So I figured, stuff it, I'll create my own.

This artwork is cursed, seriouly. Over the last year I've recreated the vector 4 times and each time it was lost in some kind of unusual computer glitch or corrupted hard drive. (I've uploaded this copy to an FTP for safekeeping.)

So, let me know what you all think.

Here's the a photo of the artwork that a fan sent to me.

Here's the sideart as it is now (Note, I'm trying to source a high quality scan of the Johnny Cage character on the side. Anyone) Obviously the scales are missing, but I don't honestly know if I can make them look like the original in vector. I may take some create license, or I may turn this monster into a raster image and photoshop them in. The image is 150cm x 200cm with 300dpi for the raster effects aka the blurs. This thing will be SERIOUSLY sharp when printed.

Here's a closeup of the detail on the head

And just for the skeptical ones (Yes, there were some people who didn't believe me when I first posted version 1.0 a year or so ago)

My motivation for doing this is purely selfish. ;) All I want is a high quality set of prints of this for my machine, I've approached MameMarquees and some other places who do some quality side art. Once someone gives me a *free* set of sides, I'll release it to the community on LocalArcade.

Lets see if my evil plan works. ;)

Hey guys, I've been receiving a bit of pressure about this artwork due to Midway Trademark infringements through a concerned (midway associated) member of this and other forums. It seems this may never get released.

Discussion?

Great job man!
I had to made some vector art for my MK cabinet also but not the sideart, just Control panel and instructions.

If I get a good camera I could take a picture of johnny cage on the side and send it to you.

I think 300dpi is too much for a sideart print, I think 150dpi is enough for that graphic. You'll decrease the file size too if you plan to raster it.

Anyway, keep up the good work, if you don't make your own sideart where are you supose to find it ????

As was said on another forum.

Tell them to ---fudgesicle--- off. Both Midway and the 3rd party idiot.
Put it up on LocalArcade and upload as a torrent.!!!

Since this was digital artwork to begin with, it seems to me the best thing to do would just be to scan a very nice original cabinet and print it as a raster file.   :dunno

I fully agree, this kind of art is worth spent the time to clean and restore a good set of scan.

but seems nowadays everyone want vector, vector vector vector of everything  :laugh2:

maybee one day people will understand the pros and cons of both format and will adapt their mind.

this is not an attack directed to gsoul[/color] I must say that I'm quite admirative to him, he jumped in a hard boat. I just whish his time and effort will turn out nicely.

Yes, i fully agree. But something in me saw the challeng and the advantages that could come from the vector. ;) Crisper, sharper and more able to be ported for other applications. ;)

I have an orignal MK1 machine that I can scan.  Then you can get the images printed at mamemarquees.  I already have done Killer Instinct and the KI2 CPO that are on his site..
You would basically need to make a deal with scott first though and then if he wants to make a deal with me on the images...

Or you can just keep up the good work on the vector job, its amazing how people are able to do that!!

Does Midway still make MK1 cabinets? No.

Is there anywhere on this site that offers to sell this artwork for arcade cabinets? No.

So who cares.

If it were MK 47 artwork exclusive to the xbox or some crap....then there'd be a "real" issue.

I say continue on.

there is no copyright infringement in reproducing this as a personal exercise in artwork, or in uploading it as a tutorial type file that acts as an example for others. an as Gatsu  says, no money is being made here, and midway do not produce the product any more either. If they did sideart, i'm sure people would buy it!

looks good gsoul

Lol, I think vector is more about patience than real talent ;)

The most impressive examples require quite a bit of know-how and concentration. Plus I would say that the gradient mesh tool takes a good deal of talent to use effectively. You can't really "trace" with it; you need artistic ability; e.g., an understanding of light and shadows. Plus the tool itself is maddening; and requires a talent all of its own just to get it to do what you want it to do.

For artwork reproductions, Mame Marquees prints directly from cleaned up raster scans. So all that would need to be done for them to print MK1 sideart, is for someone to provide them with a usable scan of the original sideart.

Gota a bit of free time today so I thought i'd stick my nose in. Cant this be reproduced from the image posted above? Rather than vector it up, (Seems wrong for this piece to me as it contains brush strokes) Wouldn't it make more sense to blow it up, path it and then repaint it? Did a quick repaint of a bit of the dragon and leg to show what I mean. My £0.02

Well. You go right ahead and get on that!  ;D

We really only need Johnny Cage repainted though, since the dragon is pretty much done in that Illustrator file. Just convert it and drop it into photoshop with the Cage image.

That's a 96 DPI photograph and a resolution of only 333 x 667. I wouldn't try to reproduce artwork with anything less than a 300 DPI scan (I prefer 600 DPI). The picture posted in this thread is missing way too much detail, plus being a photograph, it is not going to be perfectly "square" like a scan.

I dont see the problem using the original posted example as a basis for a redraw. Anatomy is anatomy at any resolution, its clear enough to get musculature and shadow from.

very true. its probably just a lack of confidence on my part since I haven't painted anything like this.

I'll just look at it like I'm tracing with colors. lol.  :afro:

I dont see the problem using the original posted example as a basis for a redraw. Anatomy is anatomy at any resolution, its clear enough to get musculature and shadow from.

You seem to be missing the point of a reproduction, which is, to reproduce the original artwork; not simply to make artwork that passes for Johnny Cage. The best you could do from that picture is a rough approximation.

Additionally there is a lot more detail to the musculature and shadows than what you can see in that tiny picture; not to mention the small details in the eyes, ears, nose, and face in general, that you pretty much can't see at all.

Of course, it is up to the people who will be using the artwork, whether they want "20/20" art on their machine or not.

This art is difficult to reproduce by its very nature. The original source was a photograph of the Johnny Cage actor (the same actor that was used to model/digitize the character in the game). This was composited with the non-photographic elements of the art, then everything was arranged and photographed together as a complete layout; then halftoned and screen or offset printed.

If someone could get a good scan (300 DPI at least) of the original art (this can be done in sections with an ordinary home scanner, and then stitched together), then that could be cleaned up and printed from directly by e.g., Mame Marquees. That would give the best results for the least amount of effort. Even better results could be had from someone recreating the art in a vector program (very difficult in this particular case), using the scan as a source, and then having it screen or offset printed.

Maxim, thats exactly what I thought as well.

Re-painting it will look good (depending on the artist), but it wont be true to the original.

So....if any of you guys out there with MK cabinets could, please scan the sideart. I'll do all the clean up and stitching the pieces together if need be.

PM me and let me know if you'd like to help! I've already got a document with the cabinet dimensions setup and ready to go.

It's obvious from what has been posted above that the vector version is already skewed so that it doesn't fit correctly on the cabinet profile.  Look at the placement of the Midway text.

great opportunity for MK sideart repro.

there's a NOS  MK  sideart on ebay, someone should buy it and scan it at a really high resolution. 600 oe even1200 dpi.

this is the way to repro this particular piece of art.

you could still scan in the johnny cage part of the image and place that ontop of a redrawn dragon. Would just need some trimming and cleanup.

That would save alot of time.

A couple of weeks ago I promised someone that I'd scan the sides of my MK1 cabinet with the original Johnny art, but the cabinet is still trapped in my shed behind several other old cabs.  I have no room to get it out or lay it down.  Looks like I'm going to have to finish my neo-geo mame cab first and get it out of the shed to make room.

Sorry to frustrate you guys, but I'm on it and working as hard as I can ....

If you send me the original picture with Johnny Cage in high resolution so I will do some progress.
I´m not afraid about  :blah: :blah: :blah:, I´m south american, so here there´s a lot of piracy to Midway fire before and insted a simple unseen MK side art... I would say: "a homage" to be honest.

Yes, also I´m new here, as I´m working in a MK cabinet, this topic got my attention.
I´m looking for a reply or a personal message from someone able to help in this dedicated sideart.

Anyway LoL... I´ve seen in the end of the topic. The link where there´s a guy scanning.
so it´s just someone with that sideart work on it. Would be killer!

Not finished yet - it'll take a little longer, but will let you know. My cab with the johnny cage art is still buried in my shed, but it will be coming out soon as I am now working on restoring all four of my MK cabs.

I'm currently preparing completely new control panels for my four MK cabs, with original art but 6 buttons - an extra button will be above the block button, to make two streetfighter-style "arcs" of three buttons each. Two of the cabs now have monitors - I decased a 63cm Grundig TV and a 60cm Loewe TV and mounted them as montors (input via RGB SCART), both in excellent condition.  I already have a monitor lined up for the third one, but can't access the monitor bay yet to work on it (space in my shed is TIGHT).

Sooooo ..... sideart is coming soon.  The summer heatwave is over now, so I am actually able to get into my shed now without cooking alive. A fair bit of re-arranging my stuff and I might be able to get it out.

I'm downloaded a PSD someone made of the MK1 poster. If the Johnny Cage pic is good enough, all that'll need to be done then is finish the dragon.

So its close to being done.

UPDATE:
---------------
yeesh....its pretty gnarly. I'm taking the Johnny Cage image from the reference photo and see if I can tweak it some. Because I blew it up to the dimensions of the cabinet and it wasn't that badly pixelated. A little cleanup and it might be proper.

Hard part will be finishing the dragon.

I got my MK1 cab out into the sun and got about 12 good photos, both sides.

Here are a couple of samples. The artwork is a bit ripped up, but the photos are good quality and you should be able to make up any gaps from the image on the other side.

If someone can tidy them up and let me have a copy of the finished product, then I am happy to email the high-res originals (3312X4416) for them to work on.

If someone can tidy them up and let me have a copy of the finished product, then I am happy to email the high-res originals (3312X4416) for them to work on.

Hmm... the art is wrong on this one, see how the dragon doesn't extend to the bottom of the cabinet?

Yeah, I hadn't really noticed before.  The print is smaller.

However, the difference is just in sizing the picture - the art is all there (well, mostly) so it should still be useful

anything not there can be replicated easily I think.

So if you wanna send them to me I can start cleaning them up. Once Im done then the community can have at them for sure.

I just need the dimensions for the side panel for that particular cab so I can draw it up in Photoshop to match the size.

I'll PM you my email address Zebidee.

Hey - so now that I have a MK1 machine it is time to finish this project.
My MK machine looks pretty empty without it. I do not like the other one available all over online.
Any one ever design any custom designs?

Hey guys, I've been receiving a bit of pressure about this artwork due to Midway Trademark infringements through a concerned (midway associated) member of this and other forums. It seems this may never get released.

Discussion?

Whether for personal use, or for public distribution, Midway cannot do anything about it so long as you do not gain financially from producing the art.   If some 16 year old kid draws a picture of Scorpion because he thinks scorpion looks cook, Midway can't get all legal on that kid.

Perhaps Midway need be reminded of fair usage laws?

But don't let what Im doing stop someone whose got the side art and is scanning it.

I'd much rather clean up some scans then repaint the rest of the dragon. hehe

Well Gatsu, if your offering to do the clean up I will take the time and scan my cabinet. I has scratches and stuff like that in the art but I will scan both sides. So if your missing a chunk of art you can get the piece of art you need form the other side. I don't mind doing the work of the scanning as long as I get a copy of the final cleaned artwork. Gatsu, send me a Private message.

I have this on XBox 360.  I'll have to look up the finishing move and try it out.  Thing is, they seem to ALWAYS omit Johnny Cage when they have this cabinet in a game fatality.  Wasn't the MK1 cab dropped onto your opponent in another MK installment?  Maybe they'd have to pay him some money.  But then again, Raiden (Carlos Pesina) is on the MK2 cab in a fatality?  Hmm.

I had a look at this today in illustrator. The cage pic is quite interesting as it looks like its a photo that was cut out and they added a thick outline all around to hide the edges. But on the plus side it make tracing easier!

Matching the 'skin' tone will be quite a task but not impossible.

Just out of interest do you guys use the eyedropper tool onto the gradient slider to get your colours for this?

Yeah, when I first got my MK1 cabinet, I was like... is this a reproduction of the original sideart?  Because all the pics online of cabinets you see are not usually high enough resolution to see that kind of detail (the thick black outline around Cage).  Same goes for how the artwork is made up of tiny dots of color (like a pic in a newspaper).  It is not easy to see that in online pics.

Looks 100% accurate while looking at both this and my dedicated cabinet.  I may be seeing a LITTLE more flesh or yellowish color in the skin on my cab art, but you know even my video card and monitor can affect how the pic appears.  This will be great when you're all done!

I'm using Photoshop CS4 with scans at 300 dpi I also have an illustrator version I was working on before I got the scans that I've uploaded for anyone that wants to take a look at it or what ever else I was debating on finishing it now that I have the scans. Either way I don't want it to go to waste so i'm giving it out in it's unfinished state.

Man that sucks you are Leaving this project! =( I may give it a go. Do you have the point where you pieced the scans together so I can do it in photoshop?
Also the vector file that crashed my inkscape. It looks like this was taken straight from a photo. Am I missing something?
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Dedicated Sideart - Progress

I'm not leaving the project I'm just releasing the unfinished Vector version I was working on. I'm still working on the raster one from the scans that I will be releasing shortly. I'm looking to have it finished no later than Monday night. As for the vector I was working on it before I got the scans , with the detail in the art a vector while nice it was going to take forever to finish. Basically photorealism is possible in vector work but it's amazingly time consuming and very difficult so GL to anyone that wants to attempt to finish the vector.

Ya very true. You are better off using the images straight from the cab. And also the Dragon at the top of the cab is faded. Is there any imperfections in the scans like scratches and stuff that need fixed? Glad to hear you are still on the project.

Thanks a lot. Only thing I notice that might be wrong is the dragon back ground is all yellow and the midway colors seem to differ. Maybe the red at the bottom of the art looks a little iffy. Awesome job tho!
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Dedicated Sideart - Progress
Post by: Necroticart on July 01, 2010, 08:56:49 pm
I matched the color the best I could but i'll see if I can get it to look a little cleaner but for now this is the best I could do and honestly I wanted to get this out without spending 6 more months on it at this stage it looks great and is close to the original cab art. plus staring/ working on that yellow dragon was making me see spots

I'll see what I can do with it to clean it up. No promises though. Not sure how I would make the dragon background at the top go from orange to yellow. You should also only need 1 side. The ppl printing it can just flip the image and print it for the other side. Another bad thing about the scans the guy gave you is that the cabinet is filthy and I can see spills or something on the dragon. The spills will also show up in the print.

If you flip the image the midway logo will appear backwards thats why I flipped the art and recomposited the midway logo the correct way. If you can make it look any better please do so I did what I could.

I accidentally clicked quote instead of edit and it wouldn't let me delete it so I put empty Would you be able to include the scans you have because my 1 side of my cab is in perfect condition and I can put my own scans with yours so the colors wouldn't need corrected.

Coming along.. gonna take a while. A lot of problems wrong with the scans from Necroticart. There is dirt drips like something was spilled on it, some object that looks like gum, fading, and parts of the art that has scribbles all over it like it was done in paint. All of which would show up in the print and would be a disaster for anyone trying to restore their MK. Nothing against you Necroticart. So there is a lot of work to do. Just wish the cab was cleaned before scans.. would make things a whole lot easier. I tried doing the scans but some reason the piece of crap flat bed I have changes sizes for no reason at all and am not able to piee them together. My 1 side is in perfect dondition with no fading except some scratches which are very easy to remove...

Post by: Necroticart on July 11, 2010, 01:53:19 am
wow what scans are you looking at. the ones I put out are fixed for the most part as show in the screenshots i've been posting also make sure your gamma lvl is set correctly at 2.2 and your monitor is displaying a 6500k color temp thats why the art may not look correct. if my temps are off I highly doubt it use the burn tool to fix the gamma issues on the print

Hi,

thank you for the mk2 pictures. But the pictures(full sideart with raydon and the clouds) is not 100% the same from original arcade sidearts.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mortal-Kombat-II-full-size-Dedicated-Arcade-Game-/320569303217?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa36b60b1 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Mortal-Kombat-II-full-size-Dedicated-Arcade-Game-/320569303217?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa36b60b1)

here is same pictures, raydon have more collor and the clothes have not so much black shadow and more have more collors)
sorry for my bad english :)

I need more pictures from the arcade cap. That i make an 99,999999% same as arcade

Does anyone know who this can be sent to (am talking about the finished torrent mk1 sideart) to get as a proper decal for applying to a cabinet.  Will this work simply as a "send the cd" to mamemarquee.com (or someone similar) and bingo!!

Also the file downloaded as a .7z file - what does this open in?

He's printing Super Off Road art for me and others and has taken a lot of time to make it just right.  He does great work.  He will print some up if enough people want them.

Can anyone upload the art file to like megaupload?  Cause I don't know how to download torrents.

Hey Rich, there is a problem. I got the art today and it's too big. It does not fit on the dedicated cab. All the dimensions are about 1 inch too big. I'm talking about the artwork itself, not the background. I know you extended the edges 1" to allow for some wraparound, but it looks like the entire image was stretched and not just the background. Make sense?

I'm uploading a video now, but you may have a big problem on your hands with all the people who have ordered already. Stay tuned.

There are other versions online, but require a lot of work before printing
