Title: What games use 8 buttons?
Post by: RedSquirrel on June 03, 2003, 08:14:34 pm
I will be going the ipac route, which will give me 8 buttons (Plus 2 more for start and coin).

But is it even worth using 8 buttons? What games ever use that many? (on MAME at least). Or do most use 6 buttons?

OR does Mame really require 8 buttons to get the most use.

Thanks

You can use the 8th button for each player to great effect. On the cabinet I just sold I had an I-pac with the 8th buttons mapped to various functions i.e. a pause button in Mame (dead handy for those 'phone rings as I'm fighting the end of level boss' moments) and a button for changing emus in Arcadeos, you can map them to whatever you like really as long as your frontend and emulator allows it.

for the 8 button's games you will find a list here http://www.mame.dk/?special=8buttons (http://www.mame.dk/?special=8buttons)
same for the 6, 5, etc replace the 8 in the url by the number you want.

Most of those games are driving games meaning four buttons (maybe gas and brake which are analog inputs) and 4 gears (which would map to the joystick diagonals), so less than 8 button inputs required.

eight buttons plus 4 more for start and coin (2 each), but . . .

I use Buttons 7 and 8 for rotate left / rotate right with mechanical rotary joysticks.  Otherwise, you can use them for some other function as others have said.

It's personal opinion, but many people use six button inputs in a seven button layout (for Street Fighter, and Neo-Geo), either:

   1  2  3
   4  5  6
 1

or

    4  5 6
    1  2 3
 6

If this helps

Stargate uses 6 buttons.  I use the 7 & 8 button inputs on player 1 and 2 of the I-Pac for "Esc" "Pause" "Tab" and "enter" buttons (need to use the ultimarc programming utility for that)

Hi Red,

Stuff functionality - I vote aestheticism every time! I have a layout very similar to Tiger-Helis except I use a fourth button on each row. (i.e.:)

        x
        x

Just looks better. (oh, of course, it can be mapped to whatever you want as well!) This is mainly because I have the top row red and the bottom blue, so it is good to have it even.

sorry - no real content to this post   :-\

Thanks. I think I am just gonna go the standard 6 button route for the control panel, and use the extra buttons elsewhere for a pause and something else.

You did pick up that I said seven buttons and six inputs, right?  (Meaning that the seven button layout won't keep you from having an input available for Pause and whatever).

Six button layout is fine as long as you don't want to play Neo-Geo fighters.  See http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=7970;start=msg58242#msg58242
