Title: NEED HELP ASAP!!! Making VGA cable, but it's missing pin 13, is it ok?
Post by: vetteguy112233 on June 18, 2008, 09:43:34 pm
I cut open yet another cable to make a VGA cable that will work with my Arcade monitor and this one has pins:

1 - RED
2 - Green
3 - Blue
5 - Gray
13 - NO CABLE HERE, IS IT OK?
14 - Black cable

I thought there had to be all 6 wires???

Ok, not entirely clear on your question, but if you're asking what I think you're asking then...
no, it's not OK as pins 13-14 are typically the h/v sync pins(which you would need I'm guessing)...assuming that is what you are asking...if not, sorry, just trying to help...  ;)

Yes that is my question. I read somewhere that if your monitor has the V and H sync cables you can just twist them together, but this is the 4th cable I have tore apart and it has all needed pins, but 13.

I tried to go to Radio Shack and buy just a 15 pin male VGA connector, but they don't have any in stock. I'm out of cables to tear apart and would like to have the cable wired to the monitor by tonight or tomorrow.

Suggestions?

I'm going to make a guess (since you have opened more than one cable) that you are possibly counting the pins backwards. If you do this you end up on pin 3 which is not used. There is a link to the VGA hack below.

If you look inside the end of the vga cable the pins are numbered (at least the first and last pins will be). It's very small writing molded into the plastic. Once you cut the cable, strip the wires and use a voltmeter in continuity mode to determine which color is which pin.

Acutally, where there is 1 pin physically missing from the cable (pin 9), I'm 100% sure I have been looking at the cables properly, especially where the last cable had the RGB in the correct positions. I had a lot of cables given to me a while ago, so I'm not so sure that the other 3 were even VGA cables, but they sure looked like it. This time I used a known good VGA cable.

I know this cable was from an old LCD monitor that I had, could that be the problem?

I'm hoping to wire this in tonight, so I'm bumping this to the top in hopes of having the needed info when I get home from work.

My design is based off of the picture that was posted above and I know that the "fat" part of the VGA cable goes to the top, which puts the missing pin 9 (on all cables) in the same place, so I'm sure I'm not looking at the cable upside down. Especially where the RGB are in the 1, 2 and 3 positions.

My cable has a pin in slot 13, but just no cable going to it on the back end.

Well, the solution has technically already been given...if you're absolutely 100% positive that it's the proper cable and that you are looking at it correctly, then simply add the missing wire to pin 13. That should take care of it presumably.

I thought about that with every cable, even if the colors were not right, I figurued I could still use the wires as long as I hooked them up properly but every cable has been missing at least 1 needed wire, so I tried to tear them apart, but getting to the back side of the 15 pins was nearly impossible. They have all had a very large metal shield that was soldered shut, so I couldn't get to the back of the connector to add another wire.

How many of you have opened these cables? If I go to the local computer store and just buy a new monitor cable, should it have everything needed?

IT'S WORKING!!!

In case anyone else ever has the same issue, here is my fix.

I found a local store that sold TONS of different cables, so I bought a 15 pin VGA cable that had ALL 15 pins. I'm not sure why the others that I cut open didn't have the needed wires, but they didn't.

I had to set Windows XP to 640X480 to stop the screen from rolling, (640X240) works better, but it's huge and hard to read the windows options.

Try Soft15khz. It gives you lower resolutions and won't damage your monitor with the wrong refresh rate.
