Title: U360 Balltop Spinning Off
Post by: RoninEditor on June 17, 2008, 01:45:07 pm
Hey all.  So I'm up and running but my U360's balltop seemed to screw off (to the left).  I try to clamp them down as hard as possible and this still seems to happen.  Would putting a dab of contact cement on the threads be a bad idea...?  Has anyone done this and regretted it if they had to take them out...?

I'm not sure what else to do because it's kinda embarrassing when people play on it and it happens.

I used some glue on my old sticks and I do regret it because now I want to install my U360's. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to get them off without damaging them.

What I've been told is to put some tape around the thread then screw on the balltop. That should keep them on there but still allow you to unscrew them if needed.

That seems strange, there must be a really bad fit between the threads. You could use contact cement but obviously be permanent. I personally would use PTFE thread tape (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thread_seal_tape).

EDIT: We must have posted at the same time headkaze, oh well great minds.....  :)

You could use Loctite. Choose based on color, red or blue. One is a strong bond that can still be broken (I think thats blue). The other is stronger and totally permanent.

Thanks guys!  Great stuff here for sure.  Yeah, I wanted to avoid contact cement if I could, not that I'd want to replace there (I love them) but in case they broke down the line.

Never had this problem.

On the bottom of the shaft there's a slot for a flat head screwdriver.

Insert a screwdriver there and twist on the balltop tight.

Shouldn't be an issue after that.

Blue Loctite is the solution you're looking for.  I had the same problem with my Sanwas

Another vote for Loctite.  I like it better than thread tape for various reasons, although both can be perfectly appropriate for a variety of uses.

Just don't accidentally use the permanent kind...

Loctite is not the way to go - GinsuVictim said it. Just tighten it up with a flathead screwdriver, done.

That doesn't always stay put.  I did that numerous times to my sanwas (which I believe the u360 is somewhat based on)  and they would still come undone.  Put a drop of blue loctite and they're golden.  And blue you can get off without breaking things.

I've never had a problem with my balls dropping off. Tightening up using a screwdriver and rubber glove should do the job. Oh god, where is this going!

You don't want to be using any old loctite if you are having this problem. You need the specific 'Threadlock' which you'll find much easier if you ever want to remove!

I agree...or instead of a rubber glove I used my mums rubber mat thing for unscrewing tight jam jar lids...you can get it really tight.

I've never had a problem with my balls dropping off.

And that must be a source of great relief!
