Title: Ideas on where to find pics for second monitor as marquee?
Post by: Dizzle on June 14, 2008, 03:20:17 pm
So I've got my mini-cab and MaLa set up with a second smaller monitor that I want to use as a marquee.  (I can't believe how flexible MaLa is sometimes)  Anyway, I pretty much underestimated what a major undertaking it would be to find decent full screen artwork for the games I play the most.  The way it's set up now, if I don't have custom artwork available, it will display the game's flyer, marquee, or as a last option, a generic MAME logo.  I don't plan on being able to have custom artwork for every game, just the really popular ones.  Google image search has helped a little, but I was wondering if anyone else knew of some potential sources out there.  Any ideas?

Below is an example:

How about Circo's emumovies?  Actual gameplay from the game itself?

That's an interesting idea.. The "marquee" stays on while the game is playing too.  Do you think that would be too taxing on resources?

Man that is so cool.
How do you get it to display to a second screen.

Perhaps.  Depends on your setup but it would be interesting to see.

If you wanted to go this route, you could use different versions of Mame for different games.  Older games that run on previous/older versions may be easier for the Emumovies to play at the same time.  May have to play with it to find the sweet spot.

Thanks  :)  MaLa actually makes it quite easy.  I've got my nVidia card set to dual view with one monitor on top of the other and I've got my MaLa layout set to 1024x1536.  The artwork displayed up top is set as "definable" in MaLa and I make sure the picture file names match the rom names.  I actually found a few instruction card pictures which will go well with fighters for the special moves.

I might have to give those movies a shot and play around with things a bit.  I've running with a P4 3.0 GHz primarily with MAME1.04 (I have MaLa selecting v1.25 for a few exceptions) so we'll see if I have any horsepower left!

I wonder if I could do this in Mamewah somehow. I would just need it to load a marquee image to a secondary display when the game starts, then change to a standard image when in the mamewah menu. Sounds easy enough.

What if you were to just take screenshots of the beginning game screen through mame? The screen where it shows the game your playing.

I think I'm going to go with that idea for the more hard to find art.  It seems to be the quickest and easiest way to go.  Thanks!

I have found some cool pictures lately though -- especially for games like X-Men and Street Fighter.  There's lots of fan art out there.  I guess if I keep chipping away at it little by little, I can have a decent collection.
