Title: What's your Downloading Speed?
Post by: Texasmame on June 10, 2008, 11:05:30 pm
Idea ripped from another thread.

Leave it to me to stop in for just a drive-by polling!    :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I love my FIOS!   8)

i have cable internet, rated at 5mb/s.  that is the fastest connection that I can get where i live.  I run speed tests fairly regularly, it usually is around 4.7mb/s...not too bad..but i was at a client the other day who has comcast, and i think they forgot to throttle his bandwidth, because it tested at 29.6mb/s.  i ran several tests from several sites and they all agreed on that speed.  It makes me a little sad to know that he had nearly 30mb/s and won't ever really even take advantage of it.

1.5mbps symmetrical wireless link. The only physical lines we can get out here in the country is phone and power. We've got a nice, small antenna (about the size of a mini dish) pointed at the closest cell tower. I've been quite impressed with it, it only goes out when it's absolutely hellish outside (typically the power isn't far behind it when the net goes). I've been able to call tech support, and they put me right on with their senior network administrator. No bandwidth caps, no blocked transfers (like what Comcast was doing), got a static IP without having to upgrade to a business account... I absolutely love this service. Just wish I could upgrade to their 6mpbs symmetrical link.

Well, I'm in Australia and we have terrible internet for the price we are expected to pay.

Me, I'm also all the way down in Tasmania which is not connected to the mainland, making internet even shittier.

I have 8mb connection but the fastest speed I have seen is 500kb/s. (from the ISP too so doesn't really count). I would say I average 1.5mb connection speeds.

This has only been availible in the last 6 months, so hopfully with our new government our internet should become more affordable.

I have 4000d/1000u as that is one of the cheapest (20€/m) in the Netherlands, and it runs perfect at 4000/1000 all the time. No caps, may run servers, static IP, all perfect setup and never had any downtime of the connection :D .
20000d/2000u and 10000u/d fiber is getting quite normal here today. But we have 75% ADSL/Cable internet penetration and stiff competition. Only Germans and French have similar good deals in Europe.

Im bumming off of my landlords DSL2 for free. And 15Mbit/s for zero money is definetly an awesome deal, considering it often tests at right around 15mbit/s most of the time.  ;D

You have capped your poll at a speed that's seems a bit too low. In the other thread many (most?) people seem to report speeds between 6000 and 23000.

Download speeds are nothing if your upload speeds are low. Cable internet tends to have high download but low upload. At least thats what they where trying to offer me with their supposed FIOS. 10Mbps down but 384kbps up. I told them if its FIOS, then their upload should be faster. I already get 768Kbps up with DSL. They told me their FIOS doesn't go higher. I told them, how is that possible, it fios!? They're like, "sorry." So I told them, once you get it faster, call me back.

Cable FIOS isn't. They try to call it that because their backend is fiber optic, but the connection to you is copper. Crap! I have Verizon FIOS, and the fiber is run right to my house. I get 20Mbps down and 5 Mbps up. For $20 extra a month, I could make it 20 up and down, but I don't need it - my connection is fast enough...

I voted 500 kbps because that's what one test said, but then this test here says I'm over 5000 kbps:

Edit: Well late last night/early this morning I was getting 40,000 consistently, so I went back to try today thinking that it would be less during the day, wrong. Now I'm getting 60,000+
I would think that my location (the sticks) I would be getting less than this, I'm signed up for a 10meg broadband connection from Charter Communications.

I'm waiting for Wi-Max or something like it in the near future. In the meantime I have DSL. Not sure what as I thought I had 1.5mbp down and 500k up, but testing just showed about 4mbp up and 650k down. I can stream Netflix - full stereo or surround - no problem.

Geez Danny, are you using digitized smoke signals or something?

BTW Does that speednet thing work? Some people really have bizarre speeds. Although it's mostle the people who post a screenshot instead of a proper quote (so they could be fake?).

I think the Netherlands and Asia started fresh in that they just went straight to wireless broadband. Some places have it as a public service even. Another reason everyone else, including the US, is trying to catch up. It's really a mental thing, and it seems the codgers in the US for example are only slowly if at all getting it.

15/2 fios package.

+1 on the 15/2 FIOS.

We were part of the beta testing for FIOS TV in the Dallas area. Man.... WAY better than DirecTV - no fading during storms or when planes go overhead... and our bill hasn't gone up like it did on DirecTV. They wanted 1 to 2 dollars more EVERY 6 months like clockwork.

Phone, TV, Internet, and Long Distance (including in state!) service for one flat rate. Saves us a least $40 a month over what we were paying.
