Title: Monitor Mounting and Bezel Questions
Post by: shredso on June 10, 2008, 09:04:20 pm
I'm in the final stages of my build based on Lusid's plans and Saint's book.  I'm ready to pull the monitor from my existing cab (an old Double Dragon).  The book doesn't give much detail on how to mount an arcade monitor.  It looks like there are some supports on the sides mounted at an angle, and the monitor basically screws onto the supports.  My concerns are in putting my 19" monitor into the huge cabinet.  I guess the supports will have to come out further.  Does anyone have any pics of what that would look like?

My next set of issues is with the bezel.  The bezels from Happ for a 19" monitor measure 25" square and my opening is 25x26.  I was thinking about just making one, but the Happ one is reasonably priced (though I haven't checked shipping cost).  I suppose I could put some trim, om the sides?  Would you still use Plexiglass over the Happ bezel?  How do the plexi and bezel stay in place?

I'm sure at some point I will want a 27" monitor in my huge cab, but for now the 19" will have to do.  Thanks.

Happ bezels are intentionally oversized so that they can be cut-to-fit, much like plexiglas. Also, monitors are almost always covered with smoked plexiglass, even if a plastic bezel is being used.

I myself am actually still trying to figure out the best way to hold the plexiglas in place for my own cab, so I'm afraid someone else will have to help you there. :dunno

Depending on how your cabinet is assembled, the bezel can simply be bonded to the plexi at the top and bottom edges (non-visible), then the plexi bonded to the rear of the lower marquee section and a couple of wood blocks at the bottom;

Depending on how your cab is setup, you may be able to use a couple blocks of wood with a slot for the plexi routed in it. That's how my former Robotron cabinet has it. There's 3 blocks that sit just under the edge of the control panel, and the bezel (it's smoked glass on a Robotron) rests in the slots cut in those blocks. The glass is pretty much vertical though, and that method probably wouldn't work very well for something angled like a Pac-Man cab.
