Title: What y'all downloadin' at?
Post by: Turnarcades on June 10, 2008, 05:41:54 pm
Bit of a random question here, but one I'm really curious about. Living in the UK it's already a given that we get ripped off, so was just wondering what speed internet is the norm where you come from. In the UK the average Joe is on 1 or 2 mb broadband, high users are on between 4 and 8 mb, whilst the top end is 10-20mb, which is around £40 a month for true unlimited downloading.

I'm on 20mb myself, giving a 2.5mb down/768kb a second upload speed, or at full speed, a DVD in about 30 minutes if you like. (Very handy for games, ahem!)

What you all using, and what's the norm in each country?

I just upgraded from 10Mbs cable to 20Mbs ADSL. Amazingly, the price is going down from 40 euro (£27) a month to 20 euro (£13) a month (and no it's not short promotional tarif).

I have no idea what the norm is in the Netherlands. I'd guess somewhere between 2Mbps and 4Mbps, but I could very well be completely wrong.

Just hit pcpitstop for a recent measure:

2595 kbps download
586 kbps upload
56 ms ping

It's ADSL (what they advertise it as.)

I'm in Cincinnati, Ohio.

20mbps down
10mbps up
ping is anywhere from 10 to 80 ms average

Im on Road Runner standard package in NC

Upload Speed: 368 kbps (46 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 22 ms

I HATE how U/L is so slow here, TOK, what package do you have through comcast and how much are you paying?

At least you guys are doing broadband speeds. I'm stuck with dialup,
usually get 42Kbps, and I'm paying about $65/month (45 for the phone
line, 20 for the internet service). I'm thinking about going to one of those
wireless ones like Sprint or Alltel, for laptops, but they should work on
my PC too, as they connect via the USB port. Just gotta check into if
it's available for my area, and if there's any download limits. Other
than that, the only other option I have is a dish, which is pretty expensive.
I'm too far out in the boonies to get DSL and don't have cable available.

Damn TOK, enjoy that bandwidth while you can!  Are you in a newer neighborhood or something?

6286K Down 768K Up.  Low contention too.  ;D

Not too bad for online games, but better if you buy games on Steam.

For a while I was paying the extra ~$15 a month for double this speed up and down; but how much junk do you really need to download in a hurry?

Still waiting for the Verizon FIOS to hit my neighbourhood.

Lol, turns out my Cable company has upped the line speed again. It's now 12Mbps instead of 10Mpbs.

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/282559335.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

I don't really trust this result though. It's way too fast. It would mean I reach the theoretical limit of the connection. That cannot be right?

Wonder how fast it will be on the 20Mb ADSL in my new house. I doubt it will be faster. I mostly got that because it's cheaper though.

20mb virgin media here, download is good unless its after 4pm - midnight when it gets capped to quarter the speed after 3gb download.

upload aint the fastest but heard 20mb is going to 25mb when the 4gb package goes to 10 at no extra cost :)

wont be anygood once they start watching the downloads of pirated wares :( mame roms count as well

Regardless of what they call it, it seems the same package offers are within the same ranges as the UK as given in my first post. Top users worldwide are on 20mb (2.5mb/sec), so I no longer feel our lines are sub-standard. Still doesn't matter how quick it is though, I always want more!

That comment about Virgin media is right though - for about 3 months now I've been downloading stuff by Megaupload to get the most of my connection (speeds are always at my bandwidth limit of 2.5mb/sec), but between about 4 and 11 my internet was being restricted. When I queried it they said they could not identify a problem, then I found out they have been trialling 'traffic management' for the top users, where they quarter your connection speed if you download more than 3.5Gb/hour between those times.

This is ---smurf-poo---, and unacceptable in my eyes as when I initially signed up (when it was Cable Midlands, then Telewest), it was because it was 'no download limits or fair usage policy enforcement, as other so-called ISP's were doing. I've lodged a complaint, cos this is not what I signed up for, and why else would you need 20mb speed unless you want to download boatloads of data?!

Someone here said "how much do you really need to download that quick?". The answer in my case is loads - Films, albums, games, apps and all sorts of stuff for me!  8)

I'm in an area where Comcast and Verizon Fios are at each others throats for broadband customers. I was capped at 4 meg down/256 up less than three years ago. They keep upping the cap every 6 months.

I was in the same boat until around two years ago.  But my dialup was worse than yours.  Our phone lines only supported 28.8.  Didn't even get 56K.  It was an absolute godsend that the phone company finally made DSL available to us.  Cable still seems many years away, considering we were in Adelphia's territory, and with their current situation...And it's obvious ours is regular DSL, when looking at what other people have.

But geez, it's better than a 28.8K modem.

except for the price youre paying, dont feel alone. im getting about the same speed as you- on broadband! told my housemate about it last night when i did a test. so eventually in a few months she might give them a call to see whats going on...

there was a poll for this just yesterday by the way:

Comcast just upped the limit in my area too.  This paints a really rosy picture though -- the Comcast service I have is pretty ---smurfy--- and they seem to be capping a lot of things these days.  I wish FIOS would roll out to my area already.. I'd love to get a dedicated 10 or 15mbps instead of this crap Comcast connection.

FIOS is awesome. This is what I get through a wireless router:

Comcast uses speed burst.  It runs super fast for a few seconds, then it goes down to 8 meg or less.

I would be willing to bet ---my bottom--- that Comcast also boosts the throughput when detecting traffic to sites like speedtest.net just to boost their stats.   :laugh2:

I just wish our provider could get the ping times down, but there's only so much you can do with a wireless link to the local cell tower. (obviously, there's no cable, dsl, or fiber in our area)

So I got my new (up to) 20MB ADSL connection and indeed it's a lot slower  :-[
