Title: Looking for a strategy game
Post by: rhoelsch on June 10, 2008, 11:54:06 am
I'm kind of a fan of the Advance Wars series, except for the presentation... I don't like the cartoony graphics and the canned battle scenes. Some of the RTS games like COH and World in Conflict seem close to what I'm looking for, except that I feel like I need more time to strategize and enjoy the battles, and don't want a mad clickfest. As for turn-based, Civilizations just seems so... resource-oriented and vast... I'd rather fight than mess with religions... anyone here have suggestions? Ideally, a way to either slow down the current military RTS's or a turn-based pure military game would be ideal (as long as I can get my hands on it, as well...)

Not a big RTS fan, but I also used to love turn based war games. Kind of got out of it when my daughter was born due to lack of time. I'm kind of out of the loop on them now, but I'm into trying them again soon.

There was a really cool turn based WWII game that still let you view the world in 3D. For the life of me I can't remember the name, but it was a pretty big hit as wargames go. I'm sure I'll remember it as soon as I post.  :P

Here are a couple cool links.

Sins of the Solar Empire is my current favorite strategy game, although its quite a bit different from the games you mentioned.

The Combat Mission series has some great turn based strategy games, although it's not quite the same as any other strategy game.  Basically you tell each unit what you want them to do, then they all move together...at the same time as the opposing team.  You then watch to see how the turn unfolds.

Another strategy game I was addicted to for a while is the Heroes of Might and Magic series, although once again it's very different from the games you mentioned.

Sorry, I guess I'm not much help in finding exactly what your looking for  :P

Although years ago I did love the game Iron Storm on the Saturn, which is pretty much exactly what your looking for (Advance Wars without the cartoony  graphics), but it's been so long since I played it and you probably don't have a Saturn, so it's kind of hard to recommend it  ;)

The only strategy game I ever got into was the Battlezone series for PC.  It was really more of a combination of FPS and RTS in that you controlled your own vehicle while giving orders.  I wish they would release a new version of that game.  Does anyone know of any games like that (where you are actually partaking in the action instead of just clicking on things)?

I was also a big fan of the Battlezone series, but I don't know of any recent games with similar gameplay.  I remember the game Giants: Citizen Kabuto had a similar type of gameplay (for 1 or 2 of the races at least), but it's also an older game.  The game Sacrifice was also a great game in it's day, although you didn't build any structures you just ordered your army around from the battlefield while running around the battlefield yourself.  Newer games like that generally only let you give orders to a small squad, which is disappointing.

The fairly recent game Rise and Fall tried something different by being a standard RTS with the ability to temporary control one of the units as an FPS, but I didn't think it worked too well.

I enjoyed Massive Assault for a little bit

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_Assault

Here is a list courtesy of wikipedia

wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_strategy_video_games#Turn-based_strategy_wargames)

There was one I read about and can't find now that involved two personal computers that would battle each other in cyberspace or something.  None of the names stuck out so it might not even be on that list (or a tbs) but it might interest you anyway.

Ever try Black & White (http://www.lionhead.com/bw/index.html)?

Other RTS games I got heavily into before moving on...
Warlords Battlecry 2
Warcraft 3
Dark Reign 2

Command and Conquer : Red Alert 2 (Yuri's Revenge expansion optional.) the game is forever old and I STILL play it to this day.

That was a really fun game.  I'm hoping Red Alert 3 lives up to its predecessors.

I was always a fan of Civilization and that series of games, and I find Civ 4 to be the best of the series.  Especially once you patch and add in the expansion packs.

Command and Conquer Generals is also a great game, in my opinion.  Other than being one of the buggiest games I have ever played, I thought it was very good. Unfortunately, it plays more like a blizzard game than a C&C game, but it is still good.

Just as it is,
