Title: Hiscores aren't saving

I just compiled a custom version of MAME and dropped a highscore.dat file into the directory (/hi).  I've tried getting it to save my Pacman scores several times, but it just won't happen.  Anyone know what I did wrong?

hiscore.dat goes in the same directory as mame.exe
