I'd thought I had a post in resto about this, but I hadn't gotten around to it yet it appears.

I've started poking around on it and purchasing parts when I see them for cheap.
I bought a ROM board on eBay, and learned that I should read *carefully*. It arrived today...with no ROMs! No wonder it went for so cheap!
On examination it looks like the wiring was cut *very* close to the original connectors, so I should be able to just wire in new connectors and wire everything up.
This is a back-burner project, I've got other ones that have priority right now. But I'll update as stuff happens.

Marquee and sound board showed up today. Now for the main board.

Went to my storage facility and replaced the Nova 2001 marquee with the Stargate one.
Had the opportunity to check out the game a little more. Noted that where the instructions would go on the bezel it was painted over. I need to figure out if the instructions were painted on or adhered on from the back.

I'm having a rather difficult time finding a mainboard. I'm always getting outbid on eBay, or they tend to sell in a unit with the rest of the boards (and I've already got the rest of them).
I'm going to keep looking for one, but in the interim might use my Delhi III motherboard. It plays the Williams classics @ 100% speed using only a 400MHz AMD K6/2.
Then again, by the time I'm ready to tackle the total restoration on this I'll likely find what I'm looking for.

I don't know if any of you guys know, but Home Depot closed down 11 of their stores. One of them was in my town here.
So when they were clearancing stuff out I picked up a spray bottle of Goof Off 2 for latex paint. I figured for a couple bucks if it doesn't work I'm just out a couple bucks.
Last night I headed out to the storage area to check on the games. It had been raining heavily and I wanted to make sure they weren't sitting in a foot of water.
They were fine. But I figured while I was there I might try this stuff
I also had some regular paint remover. Thought I'd try that first. It took off the paint okay, but went down too far. Looks like I have some touch-up to do.
The Goof-Off said it would work quickly. I sprayed it on and left it. I went to wipe it away a few minutes later...and the paint was still intact. Nuts.
So I went back to organizing the cabs in the space. When I was done I could have fit another three cabs in there (which may yet happen, I need the space at home).
Went back to Stargate, and the paint was just sloughing off! I spent like an hour just rubbing the paint off. Managed to get most of the paint off the upper right side. Stargate logo is fully uncovered.
When it was converted back in 1984 or thereabouts they put some kind of blue paint over. It preserved the art underneath nicely. It still needs a lot of touchup - especially on black - but it looks really good.
If only I'd known about this when I started working on my Moon Patrol. It still has black sides. I need stencils.

This is great news Peale. I have a Robotron mini that needs paint removed. I also have Goof Off ! I've been procrastinating because I was afraid of just wrecking it all...

It worked *very* well removing the latex paint (being latex paint remover and all). I don't know what they used at the factory, but it's stern stuff.
Don't leave it on too long...it started to make the paint run a bit. I have a streak of red going thru some yellow.

I picked up a cabinet in rough shape that turned out to be an old StarGate cabinet that was converted to a Neo Geo machine. I found this out because, at an angle, I could see the raised "StarGate" logo underneath the blue paint. I'm not trying to do a restoration, but since you have the same cabinet I thought I'd ask ... What would you use if you were going to try to remove the side graphics? Thanks!

Depends on what it was covered with. Mine seems to have latex paint, so I'm using Goof Off 2.

I'm thinking it is latex paint also, but I'm wondering how best to remove the StarGate graphics underneath the paint to get to the bare wood.

Yeah. I haven't had a good look underneath the layer of paint overtop the original graphics, but I am under the impression that it's some sort of vinyl decal or plastic sheet. I guess I could be wrong and I'll have another look.

Nope. Williams games used stencils to get the graphics the way they are.

A guy on another forum has the metal plate to mount the boards to, I'm waiting on that. Plus I need the parts to make the adapter for 4116 --> 4164 conversion. The new 4164 RAM is on the main board you gave me, CW, but as I don't want to blow it up on power up, I have to wait.
It isn't a lot of things I need, but without them things have stopped. Not just on this, but all projects for the time being.

I now have the mounting plate for the boards. Placed them on there today. But my van blew a coolant line so I can't put them in there. :hissy: :hissy:

Yes it would, wouldn't it ? Maybe it was rude of me to post the hotlinked pics.
I didn't see any harm in it though. I (like obviously most of us here) like to see what we're talking about and I don't like to need to click to other sites. But that's all just MHO of course.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I will have pictures - more, and better - in the future, but right now just leave it as-is. It's frustrating enough not being able to work on it as much as I'd like. If I worked on it as much as I thought about working on it, I'd have all twelve machines done by now. :D

I know what you mean Peale. I've got about the same problem. So far I've been picking up one cab after another because I couldn't let them "get away". I don't regret ANY buy, but this did kinda hindered the restoration of the earlier bought cabs money wise and time wise.
I'm now accumulating all parts I need for most of my cabs and see if I can combine things in one big order.
The only down-side of that could be customs trouble.....not sure yet what to do.

I popped the boards into my Defender today to test. It booted to garbage. I suspect a bad RAM, but I'm not sure which one. Something similar happened on my Defender when I swapped out the 4116 to 4164 RAM.

Gently bumping this to post that I'm going to start work on this again. Now that I have actual workshop space, I can actually give this the attention it deserves.
Though I posted over a year ago that I got the replacement CP, I never put it on the cab until four days ago. It now LOOKS like a Stargate, but it does nothing.
Dokert @ KLOV forums is making repro Williams harnesses. Mine is in worse shape than I originally suspected. His harness will be far easier than trying to fix this one. I could just get a couple cheap JAMMA harnesses and use the wire from them, but I like his stuff.
I'm not sure if the problem I stated above is caused by a bad RAM, or perhaps by an incorrect ROM strapping on the ROM board. I need to find out which ROM types I have to rule that out. Thus far that bit of knowledge has eluded me. I didn't want to remove the ROM labels to find out, but I may have no choice.

I hate having to remove ROM labels. I have considered trying to reproduce them, but not enough to actually do something about it. Does anyone make reproduction ROM labels? I would be very interested in replacing the ones on my Joust.
