Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for securing a 21" computer monitor that sits on a shelf in a cabinet? I was thinking of using some of those hard rubber straps with the hooks on each end. Any help?

On my cab I was thinking of using those "bungee" type straps, but it didnt work se well.
What did work for me was those tie straps similar to these

Ones I got didnt have the loops on the end, and were less that 5 bucks :)
Worked great for me

I used something very similar too. I got them from homedepot as well. Mine had hooks on the ends and a friction catch (you just pull to tighten). I also put hooks on the inside of the cabinet to hook them to.

The ones I picked up look something like these.

I paid $1.50 a piece at our local flea market. I was planning on installing hooks in the cabinet to latch onto. Is there a better way?

what about some sort of netting, that way it will be secure on all sides and still able to breathe\vent
-
I guess the problem with netting is it might keep it from falling out the back but if you get excited during a game and shake the machine, I would think the monitor would still rock back and forth.

I used spacer blocks on each side of my monitor (screwed to the sides of the cabinet) with some wide, thin foam weatherstripping stuck on the face that contacts the monitor. My monitor fits snugly between them so there is no side->side movement.

Ok,
I see what you're doing there with the foam now. That might just work. Thanks for the idea.

The foam just adds some "buffer" so the blocks don't have to be "exactly" the right size. I can cut them slightly too small and the foam will compress when the monitor is pushed between them for a nice tight fit and no scratches on the monitor should you ever remove it and want to use it elsewhere.
On mine, the 2x4 braces actually take all the weight and support the monitor. The strap is just to keep it in place and make sure it doesn't flip out off the supports should the cabinet get tipped back or shaken roughly. (Pretty unlikely regardless but is cheap insurance, 21" trinitron monitors aren't exactly inexpensive!)
