Title: Elite XC fighting on CBS Saturday night.
Post by: shardian on June 02, 2008, 12:11:58 pm
Anyone else watch this? It was a pay-per-view caliber event that showed on broadcast TV. I happened to tune in just in time to see Gina Carano (better known as Crush on American Gladiators) pound some poor girls face in.

The Kimbo fight was pretty good I thought. The dude Kimbo fought had the WORST cauliflower ear I have ever seen! It looked like a dangling skin tag before the fight even began. :dizzy: Don't know what Kimbo was thinking when he kept trying to DDT the guy, but he almost screwed himself twice. Both times he could have simply backed off and popped the guy for a knockout.

As to the ref stepping in "early", that is totally understanding in this case. It IS broadcast tv you know.

I watched and was disappointed, they were way over cautious.  The Kimbo fight was stopped prematurely and Scott Smith should have been given his full 5 minutes to recover from the eye-poke.  That was a great fight up to that point.  At least they have already committed to a re-match.

On the other hand Gina did deliver the goods.

I do think we learned that Kimbo still needs to prove himself.  I think if he was in there with anyone with any credentials, they would school him.  He didn't seem to have much of an answer when he was taken down, and he was completely gassed by the end of the fight.  I really want to see him in there with someone that knows what they are doing, they keep setting him up with tuna can's and has-beens.

CBS seemed to have some serious production issues, none of the televised fights went the distance and they still ran over by 45 minutes.  From what I read, CBS's entertainment division ran the show instead of the Sports division.

That dude's ear was repulsive!

Yes, the eye poke thing was ridiculous. I've been poked in the eye and couldn't see for a minute or two before. They literally ruled him out less than 2 minutes after his eye poke.

Honestly, I don't think they stopped the kimbo fight too early. When it was stopped, the guy was glassy eyed and was not defending himself. That was like the third time he was out on his feet. Plus, I don't think the ref wanted to see his ear fully explode any more than the rest of us.

Oh and with Gina, I've never seen a woman turn another womans face into hamburger as quick as she did in that fight. She punches for REAL.

And lastly, I leave you with this to show how much of a chump that big English guy really was:

I was very disappointed in Dan Murgliatta as the ref. He stopped too many fights prematurely. The Kimbo fight was fixed.

This show set MMA back 10 years.

They should have showed the WEC fights on CBS instead.

James Thompson was also knocked out in his last fight back in February by Brett Rogers (the black dude with the mohawk) who fought in the opening fight Saturday night.  I read that Rogers was pissed that Thompson got to fight in the main event.

It's pathetic how much Elitexc is protecting Kimbo!  Put a real fighter in there with him!

EliteXC has a ton of great fighters they can be promoting as the face of their company and they choose Kimbo.... I'm steadily loosing respect for ElietXC...

I missed CBS's fights the other night. Was it as good as WEC's June 1st show? The Faber vs Pulver fight was great, as was the rest of the card (with the exception of the very first fight).

Of course, UFC's still the major league, but it's good to see some nice minor league stuff.

I forgot about the CBS fights...but did watch the WEC ones...very good.  I'm going to miss the UFC this weekend too, I'll be out of town and unlikely to be near a bar that'll be showing it.

I like in that video how they call him "Butah Bean".

Kimbo's fight was definetly fixed.  Elite XC protects kimbo so much cause kimbo is a big name and he generates $$$$$.  When i read people talk about kimbo they talk as if he's been doing mma his whole life and say he's no good.  He's no pro yet but i think he'll get there in a few years.

Funny that everyone goes on about Kimbo and I'm a huge MMA fan and I couldn't care less about the guy.

He hasn't had many sanctioned fights, and he hasn't made it to the UFC or WEC, so why should I care?

Put him as a contestant on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter and maybe I'll give a crap.

You're a huge MMA fan and you discount anyone that is not in the UFC or WEC?  EliteXC has some great fighters on their roster, Robbie Lawler is ranked in the top 10 at his weight class.   Fedor is arguably the best fighter in the world and he's not in the UFC or WEC.   Your barometer for a legit MMA fighter is if he was on The Ultimate Fighter tv show??   :dizzy:

Kimbo is a complete MMA novice and it showed Saturday night.   With continued work he may become the fighter EliteXC wants him to be, but for now he is mediocre at best.

No, I watched Pride and various others. EliteXC has a great roster, and I really liked Robbie Lawler when he was in UFC, and would love to see Fedor vs Couture some day.

I just meant that the big-time is the UFC and that WEC is pretty much their minor league these days. Would you put anyone over UFC, especially now that Pride is dead?

Kimbo hasn't done enough yet to impress me. I said I'd like to see him work through the ranks on a season of Ultimate Fighter because I think it would make for an interesting season. That's definitely not a barometer of any sort....I just like seeing good fighters develop on there.

And what I meant about "put him on the Ultimate Fighter and maybe I'll give a crap" is that I like to know more about a fighter and watch them grow, and TUF is a great chance to take interest in a fighter's career path.

I wouldn't put any organization over the UFC at this point, but a lot of the worlds best fighters are not in the UFC.

I whole-heartedly agree with you there!

On the subject of other promotions, is anyone planning on watching the first Affliction show in July?  Should be fantastic show!

FEDOR VS SYLVIA
ROTHWELL VS ARLOVSKI
RIZZO VS BARNETT
WHITEHEAD VS BABALU
LINDLAND VS NEGAO

Is that Tim Sylvia? If so, I'd only watch to see Fedor kill him. He's a big goof and I've never liked him.

Yea, it's Tim Sylvia...

Sorry I didn't comment on the rest....

With names like Fedor, Arlovski, Rizzo, Sobral, Lindland....where can I see this?

I'm not familiar with Affliction...

It's on In Demand pay-per-view on July 19th.  If you normally get the UFC pay-per-views, you should be able to get this.
