Hey guys, I've been putting on a drive to get donations to get Ken Layton high speed internet. As you all know, Ken is one helluva asset to the BYOAC and KLOV communities. The guy has arguably helped out more people than anyone else and he does it without so much as a ---smurfette---...
He's unable to afford high-speed at this point, so I came up with the idea to ask for donations to get the guy UP TO SPEED! I am looking to raise around $420.00 (the exact amount will be posted when I find out the exact amount for a years worth of cable internet for him...I have his address now, so that should be forthcoming soon) to get Ken high speed for a year!
So far I've raised over $270.00 over at KLOV...
I dunno why I didn't post here at the same time, but I didn't....so here it is.
If you've ever been helped out by Ken, or if you just want to earn some good arcade Karma, send in your donation of $5, $10, $20, or whatever to: papafrizarcade@gmail.com. I plan on putting together a list of contributers to send to Ken along with ordering a years worth of high speed internet for him. If you wish to remain anonymous, please shoot me out a PM stating so. Please include your user name in the paypal you shoot over.
We're more than half way there! If you can spare a few bucks, contribute! Ken is the "MAN" and deserves this "gift" from the community as much or more than any other...
PS: If somehow this gets all screwed up, I will of course return all the money involved, but it's looking like it's going to work out! BTW...the biggest contribution thus far has been $100!!!!!!!!

Count me in!

For those of us who are ignorant, could you explain to us who Ken Layton is?
-
Ken Layton is one of the gems of our hobby. Monitor guru and all around certified arcade expert. Answers a bunch of questions here and in other arcade forums.

He's good stuff :)

Ken is a technician who posts on several forums, including here. 99.99999% of his posts are purely to answer questions - most of which are beyond the scope of most members. He goes above and beyond the call of a standard response, and never asks for anything in return.
-
Just got off the phone with Comcast. They have a special through December for $19.99 per month. Then it jumps to $55.95 per month. Knowing Comcast, they're only going to give the promotion for 6 months to him. They also said taxes will total less than $1.00 per month.
Cost = $19.99 x 6 + $55.95 x 6 + $1.00 x 12 + $467.64 total.
I can order it for him and pay with a credit card over the phone. He can then call in and re-schedule installation time when he can be there.
I am at $362.00 without my contribution!
BRAVO PEOPLE!
PS: Any overage will go toward another month of highspeed...there is no contract.

He was the first person to help me in this hobby... he always helps when he can and NEVER busts out an "ego" doing so. The guy is simply put, one of the best assets of this hobby.

Ken has posted an answer to every monitor question I've had!
That guy Rocks!
Count me in,
Bender

We're at about $425 now! Keep it coming! I plan on adding an additional months worth for my donation regardless of however many months we can get for the guy!

What other broadband alternatives (e.g. fios, uverse, dsl) does he have there? There are always alternatives especially if DSL is cheaper for him overall. If we really go great gonzo, we could also reduce his phone bill by going with a VOIP provider (if we go with non-telco that is), thus perhaps making it more economical for him to continue even if the forum funding runs out.

I've shot him an email asking what alternatives he has...bottom line is i'd rather get him 16 months of DSL than 12 months of cable if its feasible.
WE ARE AT THE GOAL!!! You're still certainly welcome to contribute and every dollar will go toward more high speed internet for Ken... I will keep taking donations until tomorrow noon at which time I will set things up and pay for however long we can get for the $$$ we have ...
-
Ken? He's helped me here and at an Atmel forum if I recall the avatar correctly. I don't always agree with his advice, but it's worthwhile to listen to anyways. I always end up learning something new or thinking through things differently with Ken.
What a time to be pinched. I'll see what I can pitch in by tomorrow.
-
We're up to $575!! I'll keep taking donations until noon tomorrow. That's 14-15 months of service for brother Ken!
-
Update: We're up to $647.00! I think Ken's going to be speedin' along for months to come...
-
Hey all...
I am happy to say that I just put $750.00 down on 1.5MB/860K DSL service for Ken! That's 18 months+ worth!
He will get the modem on the 9th!
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR DONATIONS! I will shoot over a list of the 38 usersnames who donated (one anonymous) to Ken when I have a chance to put them together.
YOU ALL ROCK!!!!!!!
-
Wow, Nice job man. Yea that blows if dudes on here trying to help and a lot of threads are bandwidth munchers with big pic files etc.
I just noticed this thread now, are donations still being taken?
-
All additional donations accepted will go toward the continuation of Kens internet...every dime will go toward more months of high speed for the guy!
papafrizarcade@gmail.com
*minus paypal fees of course (those ---daisies---!)

Just caught up with this thread. Don't know if this came out when you called, but if the dsl is with his phone company, they may give a bundle discount.
-
shoot me a PM frizzle, i work for Comcast I can get him unannounced promos I just need either his phone number or email (@Comcast) addy I can get the rest of the account info through that
Ummon, if its Comcast its cable not DSL but he can still get bundled discounts for having more then 1 product, meh I don't wanna be advertising for Comcast on my time away from my job, lol
-
Count me in as well.
He has helped me with any monitor problem I have ever had and got the problem sorted from my bad discriptions.

DAMN! If I only read this before ordering DSL. Comcast pissed me off! They quoted me one rate on Monday and bait-and-switched me on Tuesday. After being transferred back to the "queue" 3 times when asking for a Manager I essentially said "screw you" and went DSL. Even after explaining the situation and the fact I had $750 in CASH to immediately pay them, their inflexibility was incredible.
Sorry...but no cable for Ken.
DSL.

I know who Anonymous is.
-
Do ya? He must not be so anonymous then?
-
It's Ted Danson.
-
UPDATE: Ken's High Speed was hooked up yesterday....but he missed UPS and the modem. He's supposed to get it today....also, I have collected enough more to add a couple more months...

OOPS miss that thread ??? can i still participate ?

...any and all funds that come in for Ken go to ken to add more time to his account. We're up to a little over 2 years now I do believe.
-
I see this backfiring though. With all of this bandwidth, it is possible Ken will be here LESS because he will be so busy watching porn vids. ;D

Naw, he'll be fixing their monitors so they can play Thermonuclear War, or a nice game of chess (bonus points for those who pick up on this)
-
I'll take the bonus points, Joshua!
Apparently Ken is now set up and sent his thanks out in this thread on KLOV:
http://forums.klov.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB3&Number=783498&page=0&fpart=10
I'd like to add my thanks to Frizz for putting this all together and giving the communities a way to show their appreciation to a true gem who has given so much.

No thanks necessary... this was for Ken. It was, bottom line, a TRAVESTY having that guy on dial up....we'll probably revisit this drive in a couple years when I get the first "bill"....
;)

Strange game, professor.
-
The only way to win is...not to play.
-
...Makes me hungry for Burger King!
-
It might help to beef up security around the W.O.P.R.
-
Now I expect Ken to help twice as many people.

Go#$a*mit, I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it'd do any good!
