Title: Is this guy crazy to ask this much? Is it legal?
Post by: DeLuSioNal29 on June 02, 2008, 01:14:22 am
I've read the following posting on craigslist and it seems that this guy wants $600 for a 2 player box.  Is it me, or is he trying to use the MAME roms to trick people into thinking they are getting a whole deal here?

What a disgrace to the arcade community.

It's not you. It's a stretch to think this is the whole deal.

For one, it's not even an entire cabinet.

Second, that thing is pretty ugly. He's got this half-way decent looking CP (not a design I would choose however) plopped right into this ugly brown unfinished box. The box doesn't even look complete nor does it appear to be squared off. It looks like he used that flimsy paper-like pressed lumber and put it together using penny nails.

Third, is that supposed to be the marquee in that one little box? What the ---fudgesicle--- is anyone supposed to do with that? Mount it on their entertainment system above the TV or something?

Lastly, for $600, the seller should at least have the decency to include the  :censored: PC. His comment about,
Quote
plays on anything better than a pentium 3!
seems to imply that the seller isn't including the PC at all!

I'm sorry, but for $600 I expect quite a bit better workmanship than that.

What an arse

His AIM name (eggrolltype4) is on there, i suspect that will be his email too (eggrolltype4@aol.com). I think he should receive an email or 200 (http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif)

There is nothing wrong about asking $600 for a control panel, with lovely cardboard brown surround.

It wasn't not too long ago when someone here wanted to charge $5400 for a arcade cab without a spinner.

You can only ask right?

He's out of Queens down in  NYC, what do you expect?  Not everyone is dishonest but down in the city there sure do seem to be more than their share of ripoff artists.  Also we're talking about an area (mainly Manhatten) where people pay as much to park their car per month as I do on my house payment!  Everything is over priced down in that area.

Still, the CP looks like it's in an old (and cheap) pressboard dresser drawer and the Roms are definitely making it look like it is something special and cooler than it really is.  Hey... don't be surprised if someone buys it though!

If he isn't supplying the PC then how is he supplying the roms?

Just remember....  Something is worth only what someone else is willing to pay for it.  If that someone else is an idiot and doesn't do their research before plopping down $600 they deserve to be ripped off.

Ironically, I'm from Queens and I started this thread.  So, It's not a "Queens" thing at all.  Don't get me started.  :-P

That aside, I really wish I had screen captured the webpage, although it was REALLY long with tons of pictures of MAME games on his "TV" which is why I found it so funny.  :-)

Meant no offense to you, like I said, not everyone is dishonest, but there is a good share of husksters down in the city... again that doesn't mean you are one.

When people see the price of some of the premade multi-game cabs in places like Sears, Sam's Club and other stores, some for as much as $3grand...  I bet he gets someone that not only buys it but thinks they got a good deal.
