Title: New Idea for DIY Spinner/Steering Wheel
Post by: newtrix on May 31, 2008, 11:33:06 pm
Well its Saturday and I don't have a project going right now.  So I was cleaning out my garage and came across a proto-type of a new spinner design I was working on last year.  I abandonded it but I still think it is a good idea especially for a steering wheel.

This is a bicycle hub steering wheel proto-type.  The idea is using a bicycle wheel hub as a spinner/Steering Wheel.  The hub already has wheel bearings and a nice balance.  It does not spin forever, though mostly because it lacks mass.  If you look at the first picture you would mount the aparatis to the cp using the spoke holes the hub itself is hard mounted to the Control Panel.  The bolt sticking out the top is how you would secure any top or steering wheel you wanted.  I envisioned a toy steering wheel.  For the Encoding wheel i tried a few different things first I went shopping at the dollar store.  I bought a plastic baby bottle and an orange juicer thing.  I cut the baby bottle in half, painted black stripes on it and drilled a hole in the bottom and fastened it using the bottom bolt.   This did'nt work so hot (I should have printed one on transparency or something. )  Next i cut the juicers center out and fitted it to the bottle.  I removed the outer ring leaving alternating tabs of plastic.  The mouse hack type sensors liked that a little better.  I never finished the idea, but thought it had promise and others might be able to make it work well.  Anyways that's my contribution to the hobby for the day.

Ah yes... hacking a spinner. Here is the one I made with an Atari steering wheel and a printed encoder wheel

Overall... pain in the ass. I'd just assume buy one from now on.

Yeah, with the affordability of spinners today, hacks just aren't worth the time and effort, considering the performance.  Very cool however!
