I have a Hydrogen controller and a control panel that has a joystick and eight buttons.
I intend to solder wires from the control panel to the Hydrogen controller as illustrated below.(Now I’m stuck).
Since I’m a MAME newbie who would like to get around to recording and viewing INPs, can anyone advise at what points on the Hydrogen controller I should connect the three remaining buttons?
I’ll not be playing any games that require a trackball/spinner, or more than three buttons during game play(with this particular control panel).
Thanks a lot.

I actually do mine starting on the top row, but I always use a layout with the stick on the left.

No matter what you make them, you can remap them in MAME to suit you. There are options within MAME to set buttons globally or per game, MAME doesn't really care what button number they are.

Then I guess I'm just worried about it too much.
I will however have to turn the control panel 180 degrees to play some games, because I am right handed, so the button mapping feature will come in handy. I'll of course have to remap the joystick inputs when I do this.
Thanks.

A good reason to become ambi-dextrous. I have for several games.

Ok, I spent the weekend trying to set up this control panel with MAME and don't now what to do next.
All switches(4 for joystick, 6 player buttons, Coin, and start) along with ground on the player one side were connected by soldering wires from them to the Hydrogen controller.
Are there any more locations on the Hydrogen PCB that have to be connected to something?
I'm not sure if I need MB1 & MB 2.
Can someone tell me how to get MAME to find it?
I can't figure out the next step.
Thanks.

As long as you have your grounds daisy chained to each switch, the inputs should work fine. You do have to hook up the encoder to the computer via usb cable. After your computer recognizes it, open up a run prompt, word program, etc., hit your buttons and see what happens. I have this encoder and it works flawlessly.

MB buttons stand for mouse buttons--right and left click. No need to hook them up unless you want to mimic the mouse buttons.

"Run prompt"?
Thanks, but I don't know how to go about doing that. I know about run on my start menu, but what next?
BTW. My keyboard works fine for mame. I just can't get the hydrogen controller to work at all.

Yeah, start menu, then run. Hit your buttons, then see if you get any letters to come up on the screen

That's what I did, but I get nothing.
Thanks.

I finally got it working.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to re-map the control switches.
Anyone use "CPFreedom"?

Fire up MAME and hit the TAB key. The first couple options should be to configure controls globally and locally.
I do a global first, then tweak games that need odd configurations one at a time.

???
That does nothing much.
I opened wolfmameplus-0106.
A "MAME for Dummies" site would be appreciated.(I want to be able to record and submit INP files).
Thanks.

TAB is the default key for setting options in regular versions of MAME. I'm not familiar with WolfMAME. It shows dip switch settings and all on screen right. I'm as lost as you when it comes to viewing INP files. I've tried a couple times and can't ever seem to get it right.

Before my last hard drive died, I was able to watch some INPs earlier this year, but now I can't figure out how to do it, and I haven't found any instructions on the internet.(MAME is not a user friendly app).
If I had an Indiana Jones cabinet to put my PCBs in I wouldn't be trying so hard to figure out MAME now.
The instructions at Atom Arcade's website for mapping the Hydrogen Controller are atrocious an haven't helped at all.
