i've just picked up a wg 19k7689
it's box fresh... manufacturing date: 1991.
at the moment i'm not able to test it but...
i was browsing some monitor threads and came across these bad capacitor stories...
all this discharging and soldering stuff scares me plus it gives me the idea
arcade monitors are real vulnerable and need new caps every couple of days ;D
so i was wondering...
what's the likelihood of some caps gone bad while it was sitting in the box for 17 years?
also... are bad capacitors bound to happen? like it's just a matter of time no matter what?

Oh...about 100% chance. After that long a bunch of them have definitely dried.
Now...how *badly* they've dried remains to be seen. It might work just fine.
And why does discharging and soldering scare you? I think 100% of the stories go like this: "I was so scared to discharge, then I did it, and wow, I was underwhelmed." Just calm down.

well i guess because all these tutorials say something like BE CAREFUL YOU MORON 5000000 VOLTS!!! THE TUBE WILL IMPLODE AFTER IT SHOCKED YOU TO PIECES... YOU AND YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY WILL DIE!!! in blincking 24 pts bold comic sans.
but yeah you're right, i should calm down.
i spoke to this electronics guru at work, he offered wiring my cab. i guess he would be able to fix bad caps too.
would you know?...
is there a kit available for wg 19k7689's?

It's not really what you expect. For most people, it's a pretty underwhelming experience. For some, it's more than what they expected. The warnings are there for good reason, no one wants anyone on these forums to physically suffer from a mishap due to our activities.
The first time I drained a flyback, it was a rather underwhelming experience. I worked myself up, spent a lot of time preparing the ground lines. Double checked all my connections. Put one hand behind my back and using my modified screwdriver... a small pop and I was done. I'm still careful, but it's not really the nerve racking experience I thought it was.
There are other things that will make your hair stand on end though. The first time I fired up a monitor with a cracked flyback was a real interesting experience. After that, I was banned to working on my cabs in the garden shed. Not that there was any room in the house anywas. :-\

The Real Bob Roberts (http://www.therealbobroberts.net) should have the kit that fits your bill. Just follow his directions.

Electrolytic capacitors go bad just sitting there whether they're being used or not. You have a k7000 series monitor so get the k7000 capkit.

well, there is a solid polymer type available (if you really want to pay the price )
the electronics field changes sooo rapidly , it is difficult to keep up with ;)

I just didn't want to confuse the poor guy. Esp with the price difference.
Replace them every couple years? Depends on how hot they're running, how often, etc. Heat ages them dramatically. For home use, likely they'll last a long time. Unless you have the machine in a hot place that's running 24/7.

i googled "bad caps" and found like pics of bad caps, how about that.
mine look all clean and fresh non bulging or leaking but i guess that doesn't mean shhh... right?

You are correct. And as far as I know, caps have to be used in order to bulge and whatnot. Yours are likely just dried.
Again, your monitor may work just fine. But there is a *possibility* of problems.
