I'm fairly new to the MAME bug reporting methodology, so I thought I'd post a possible bug here first to see if I'm off my rocker or not. I've just signed up with mametesters.org, so I can submit this, but I need a sanity check to make sure it's not my config. I don't see anything in the mametesters database.
Setup: mame 0.125, command line version
arcadeVGA on arcade monitor, cocktail machine
the deal is thus:
when in cocktail mode, when the screen flips for player 2 to start, all the sprites seem to be shifted off the screen by an inch or two.

does this happen to anyone else?

Looks like a bug from here. All 6 Dig Dug sets show this problem.
If you could, please submit this bug so the MAMEDevs will notice and correct this bug when possible.
If you have any problems with the logistics, feel free to ask me or consult the documents on site to assist.

Thanks for confirming it.
I'd changed some video options on my setup, then went and played a few games that used to work with previous MAMEs and found a number of them in a row that had issues, so I thought for sure it was me.
digdug, digdug II, galaga and dock man all have problems with player 2 when in cocktail mode.
I'll go submit some issues.

Good deal!
I have noticed all vertical games in galaga.c are having this issue.
Just be sure to post a separate bug for each driver effected.
Thanks!

As a FYI... I just posted a bug related to all set in MAPPY.c regarding the cocktail screen offsets (includes Dig Dug 2). Seemingly related, but 2 entirely different regression versions.

These issues were resolved in this latest MAME update (0.125u3). Thanks again for reporting!

very nice!
thanks for helping my bug submission along, and great job to the folks who fixed it!
I'll most certainly test out the latest builds. I'm in the process of setting up a new cocktail machine, so I've got 400+ games to test out in the next few weeks.
