Title: Question about setting up your front ends
Post by: mnguy12000 on May 14, 2008, 01:37:12 pm
Hey all,

I have just found this awesome site and I am very impressed with what you guys have created.

A little back ground, i have been messing around with Mame32 v.92 for a while now, but after I saw the FEs I would like to tinker with that, because sooner or later I will end up building my own cab, and I dont like the interface mame32 offers.  Sure it works well for me sitting infront of the pc, but I would like something a little more professional ya know!

I guess I have been searching the forums for a while and just cant find what I am looking for.  What I would like to know is how do you guys set up you pc for mame usage?  Mine runs fine but I am looking for a tutorial on the way to intergrate a FE-with mame.

Would love to here how some of you get things rolling.

Thanks for the help and I'm sorry if I missed something that tells me what I would like to know!

examples I have liked are Mamewah fe like Knievel's

Here you have a list of Existing front ends for your cab.

http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Front-Ends

Concerning tutorials.

I have a simple tutorial for my FE (AtomicFe) , you can find it on my website in documentation section.

http://www.atomicfe.com

There is also an excellent tutorial for the Mala FrontEnd done by unclet  , somewhere here (in the wiki i think).

Mamewah  tutorials are really easy to find on the web too.

And if you are ready to pay for your FE , you have also GameEx and Maximus Arcade.
Which are well documented too.

Most of them have also there own forums for questions and help.

I typically run MAME and Daphne. So I create a "emulator" folder in the top level of my hard drive, then a "mame" directory and a "daphne" directory under that.

In the mame folder I have the artwork, videos, roms, and so on. Likewise for Daphne.

You can also create subfolders under the MAME folder if you want to run different versions of MAME with your frontend.

I also typically install frontends into a "frontend" folder on the top level of my hard drive, rather than to the program files directory. I think I have 27 frontends in there right now. :) That way I can navigate around with a command prompt. But I am a dos-head so that's just my preference.

Dont forget to thank Havok as well, he wrote the english language versions of the Docs for it.

ps. Havok has stood up for me a few times here, so I figured I should throw that one out for him.

pps. There is a party at Havok's house tomorrow night, he doesnt know about it yet as he will be out of town. BYOAC: Bring your own alcohol cache.  Dont tell him! As he will be pretty sore when he sees the state of his place when he returns.
