Title: ARGH!
Post by: CheffoJeffo on May 14, 2008, 10:13:00 am
I have come to that stage where I have to turn down free cabinets ...

A SubRoc3D cabinet (complete, non-working) came up for free last night -- 4 bloody minutes from my house. I spoke to the guy this morning and was ready to jump in the van and go pick it up (despite not having room in the basement) when it occurred to me to ask if it was the upright or cockpit model.

It's the cockpit and I can't transport it before I head out of town for the weekend.

ARGH ... where's the :tommy smiley when you need it ?

BTW: Did Tommy simply give up on coming here after his "time-out"?

I know how you feel. A complete Super Asteroids that "works sometimes" came up for $25. I agonized over whether I should get it. We're getting rid of almost everything in the garage in two weeks. If it popped up next month, I would have been all over that thing. As it was, i didn't want it sitting outdoors getting rained on while I made room in the shed.

Could you pick it up, stick a "forever" stamp on it and mail it to central Illinois?

He threatened a full implosion by laying down an ultimatum for saint and then self-deleted.

Then came back as Jerry Seinfeld to chat about the Super Bowl.

Then he self-deleted again.

There's a weird bowling game that doesn't recognize the cue ball on Craig's for $125. Want that instead? I should just said, "screw the weather," bought the Asteroids cab and moved the lawnmower, tiller and tablesaw outside. But the wrath of Woman is pretty powerful, putting her brand spanking new Honda mower outside is an invitation to the gates of Hell. I can deal with Hell, but I have no idea if Hell runs on 120v or 220v.

It's getting harder to weed out the chaf. Some twit has been trying to sell the same two lame MAME cabinets for around $2000 for the last three months with no takers. A couple of medicore pins for $1,200, a bunch of cabs for $700, and the same stupid egg shooter game for $250 all keep appearing. Meanwhile, I'm still kicking myself for missing the Baby Pac for $250... ARGHH...

You could always park a car in the driveway for a couple weeks.  ;D

Almost all cockpits separate into 2 or more sections.
As an op, I never ran into such a cab that was a single piece.

If it's this one then I would nab that up just because it's "different".

That one is a pool game. It's Super Strike (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9961). Same PCB apparently.

Plenty were. In fact, it is the bane of collectors now, that most Discs of Tron Environmental cabs have been HACKED in half by operators.

(PS: First you said you were a manager in an arcade, now you say you were an operator? Which is it?)

The SubRoc cockpit does come apart (or at least it looks like it does in the manual), but since I took all of my tools to the cottage last week and left them there (knowing I will need them this weekend), disassembly wasn't an option. And I couldn't be bothered to go buy/borrow tools and spend a bunch of time disassembling a game that I likely wouldn't keep, since I don't have the space.

Never said that it was impossible that there were none that were 1 piece.
Just spoke my personal experience with most large cabs.

I was an  Arcade Manger at  'Time Out'  for 3yrs.   Op was just easier to type.
The only real difference was that I got paid less, and was under much greater
pressure (upper management).

I cleaned, collected and fixed all the games and pins.  I even had to travel to two different other locations
to service and collect from kiddie rides.

Paperwork, hire/fire, stocking prizes, ordering supplies, cleaning, daily deposits, and ordering people out
who came in with drinks :P

Most would have thought that such work would be fun.   Turns out, it was one of the most
challenging and demanding jobs that Id ever had worked.  (and the pay sucked)

I have a  feeling kiddie rides would be HELL to service...

Redemption games were the worst.  Mechanical wear/failures, constant ticket jams, oodles of wires to check... etc.

Kiddie rides are pretty simple.   However, cleaning them was Hell  >.<    Sticky gunk all over them and
all over the floor platform.  (ice cream, soda, all sorts of nasty old petrified food bits...etc.)  The smell is
pretty awful too.
