Title: Ikari warriors ROLLING ROLLING ROLLING.
Post by: deano728 on May 13, 2008, 08:50:57 pm
I had an original zaxxon cab with the original monitor that I had an ikari warrior PCB in.  I bought an ikari jamma adapter and converted the cab to jamma so that I could play heavy barrel and time soldiers.  The monitor died (half of the monitor went black) so I replaced it with a vertical 19” RCA 82-43WNA7.

The funny thing is that heaby barrel and time soldiers work great with the new monitor but Ikari doesn't.  Although the picture is there, I have vertical lines scrolling very fast from right to left.  Adjusting the controls do not seem to affect the rolling.  Any ideas?  Does Ikari warriors just need a special monitor?

you may need to jumper the vertical and horizontal sync on the video input plug

Thanks for the response.  Unfortunately, since I am somewhat of a noob when it comes to these things, I am not sure what it means!!!  Please explain when you have a chance.

you have a couple of wires going from the gameboard to the monitor chassis.

Red
Green
Blue
Hsync
Vsync
Gnd

Some boards require Hsync and Vsync be connected seperately, sometimes they are jumpered and sometimes they are both connected to Vsync.

Long story short.  Your gameboard has a Hsync and a Vsync output into the monitor chassis.  You need to have a wire that connects Hsync and Vsync together but don't unplug them from where they are.

Take a picture of the connector on your monitor chassis for more specific instructions.

Here is a pic of the connection to the chassis.  I think I see what you were talking about with jumping the wires.  What is it that I should try and do?  Thanks so much for the help!(http://)

On the small connector it looks like the H and V are already connected.

Unplug that small connector and take a meter and make sure that you are getting a connection between the two sockets.  If you are not then make sure you are getting a good connection by recrimping the pins, replacing the jumper with a new one etc.

If the two sockets (in the connector) are connected, therefore, H and V sync are connected, try to remove the jumper.

In other words, you have the one long wire from you gameboard going into the connector, that one should stay there but the little jumper needs to be removed somehow.

When you try the new configuration (without the jumper) report your findings.

NOTE:  You may have to adjust your H-hold and V-hold after removing the jumper.

Upload a pic of the rolling symptom.

Just so we can decide weather its rolling from bad sync or bad h/v hold adjustment.

He said adjusting the hsync and vsync didn't do anything....... hmm, I guess the trim pots could be bad.

that blue/white wire looks like vdeo ground to me

Here are the pics...  It is wierd that other jamma games work fine and don't have this symptom.

It is hard to see, however, there are numerous vertical lines scrolling from right to left.  It almost looks like interference...

Thanks for your help!

try connecting a 5k resistor from video ground to sync

If those wires are ground, do NOT disconnect the jumper.  I should have minded my bee's wax!   :laugh2:

try connecting a 5k resistor from video ground to sync

Can you explain what this means?  I am a noob...  I would really appreciate it!

on certain manufacturer boards you would find problems with sync,a good example is kortek ktmf monitors and world rally by gaelco
to fix this it would be possible to "tie down the sync",basically you get a 5k ohm 0.5 watt resistor and connect one end to the video ground and the other end to the sync on the video in plug

but have you even tried any of the adjustments yet?

I have changed all of the adjustments to all of their extremes and nothing has gotten even close to fixing the problem.  Since I can get any other board to work with it, it makes me think that there is something different with Ikari warriors?  The ikari board still works with the old monitor...

...so I replaced it with a vertical 19” RCA 82-43WNA7.

FYI you have a Wells Gardner 19K4900.  RCA does not make arcade monitors.

It looks like a minor sync issue.  Try removing the sync pin from both inputs and try first one, then the other to see if your picture improves.

Again, I am kinda retarded when it comes to these things.  Can you break it down a little more simplistically for me?  I am a simpleton and I am not sure what is the sync pin.  Is it the blue/white wire and the blue wire on the 2nd molex connector?  Thanks in advance!

The very same.  You will note that the same wire goes to two pins.  Take it out of *both* pins (don't cut the wire, just use a pin to remove the connector inside the housing).  Then test things by putting that connection first on the end-most pin and see if that improves things.  If it doesn't, move it over by one.

If that doesn't help things, I've got nothing.   :dunno

It's been a while because I wanted to make sure it wasn't the monitor.  I bought a brand new 19" monitor.  It is definitely not the monitor or the ikari board.  Still same symptoms with ikari, but as before, all other jamma boards work fine.  Side note: the picture is much better even though rolling  ;)...

So, I am going to try the 5k resistor that grantspain suggested, but can someone explain better what I need to do?  I think the video ground is in the jamma adapter.  Do I just tap into that with a new wire and connect it to a 5k resistor and then where do I connect it to?

If I do this, will the ikari board work and everything else be messed up?  The monitor that died look terrible, but at least it played ALL of the games without the rolling symptoms.

One thing I did notice.  There is a jumper from the HSync to Vsync, but there is no connection to the gound pin on the monitor chassis.  Could it be as simple as running a line from the jamma video ground to the pin on the monitor chassis?

Thanks for the help guys!

on the monitor video input plug at the monitor end just push a resistor in the ground pin and the vert sync

the 5k resistor is a fix for certain game boards/monitor combinations i.e namco/hantarex

what version board do you have, snk or jamma-if snk are you using a jamma adapter

does this game board need a -5vdc,according to what i remember from 22 years ago it did and it may affect the sync as well as sound
would make sense

Thanks grantspain!  I have an original SNK board w/ jamma adapter and I believe it does have a -5V input.  So do you think the old monitor had this 5k resistor built into it?

I wish I would have kept that old monitor, it might have helped with problem solving this.

I will go to an electronics store and get a 5k resistor today.

still trying logicalise this problem.
if your monitor works on every other game then its not a monitor fault
if the ikari board on another cab then the problem must relate to wiring or voltage of your cab

this post had got rather confusing so it would be best to deal with these 2 points first

Yes, you are correct.  It has to be something with the wiring because the ikari board worked fine on the other monitor and now the 2 monitors I have tried have worked for every board except the ikari board.  So it must be something with the wiring.  Thanks for your help on this one.

or maybe your other cab has a -5v on the psu and your present cab does not
this is gonna be something really daft
Title: Re: Ikari warriors ROLLING ROLLING ROLLING.
Post by: deano728 on July 20, 2008, 06:07:14 pm
Well, it is narrowed down because the cab is still the same.  The only thing different is the monitor.  BUT, I have used 2 different monitors and both had the same symptoms.  That is why I wish I kept the old monitor, because although the picture was really bad because it was the original zaxxon monitor, it worked with the ikari board.

Thanks again for your help in diagnosing.

Should I go get the 5k resistor and give that a try??

i thought you had the same problem with all the monitors, that 5k resistor fix can be used when you have a slight vertical roll-when it just will not lock
for a few pennies it is worth a go
i would like to see some photos of your wiring and monitor as i am working blind here

There is a photo of the chassis a few posts up.  Let me know what other angles or close ups you would like and I'll take them and upload.  Thanks!

you said you have a new monitor,is it brand new ?
i need to see the video input plug for the chassis
peale made a point earlier about the sync wiring which could be the problem.

so pics of the video input plug please

I did get a new monitor for my defender, but I tried it in this first just to see if it made a difference, it didn't.  Here is the pic of the video in for the monitor I am trying to use in this cab.

Although the picture is there, I have vertical lines scrolling very fast from right to left.

From what you've said and from looking at the pictures....... the "playing field" is not rolling .....just the questionable "lines" that are scrolling from left to right.

The "picture" itself looks to be stable. Which steers me away from thinking it's a sync issue.

In your pictures it looks like the screen is washed out quite a bit.
The black areas aren't very black, more of a white/gray.

You mentioned trying to make adjustments, but have you specifically messed with the brightness, contrast and possibly even the SCREEN voltage on the flyback.
There is also a BLK LEVEL pot (VR201) mentioned in the manual.

Wonder if there is a slight voltage output difference on that Ikari board as compared to other jamma boards. Not uncommon to have to readjust a monitor when swapping boards, even if they are all jamma.

Correct me if I'm wrong in any of my assumtions.

No Kevin, You are correct on all accounts.  The picture is washed out and the picture is stable.  There almost looks to be interference that creates scrolling vertical lines.

I have completely turned all of the adjustment knobs I can see to both extremes and nothing takes away the "interference".   My son actually plays the game before I make him stop.  I think it will ruin his eyes  :o

I will look for the VR201 that you mentioned.  Where did you find a copy of the manual?

Thanks to both of you guys for taking the time to analyze this for me....
