Title: What the deuce are the rules for Progear?

I don't understand the basic gameplay mechanics of this game, which is too bad because I'm falling in love with manic shooters.  I can't seem to grasp the purpose of the jewels, and the difference between the two types of shot.  The explanation on wikipedia is far from helpful.  Anyone familiar with the game?
