Title: MAME on PSP not horrible!
Post by: rhoelsch on May 09, 2008, 01:24:22 pm
Just an update, if anyone's into portable mameing...

Working perfectly that I tested on latest Mame4All:

Pac-Man
Ms. Pac
Pac-Man Plus
Donkey Kong
Asteroids
Asteroids Deluxe
Frogger
Bosconian
1942
Tapper!
Galaga
Spy Hunter
Centipede
Robotron (starts, but need an F6 key)
Battlezone
Star Wars
Moon Patrol

anyway, beats emulating shoddy console ports...I haven't tried anything more advanced like fighters, but most are done well enough on the consoles anyway... bathroom time is now funner (and more accurate!) than EVER!

The CPS2 and CPS1 emulators I've played on PSP work amazingly well!  I'll have to try out MAME4All.

I dunno.  Maybe the version for MAME4ALL I used was old and outdated.  If you could tell me what version number you used I'll give it a shot.  But I tried it a few weeks ago, I forget if it was 1943 or 1941, which ever one was the LAST one in the series the game lagged.  And I was like 'Screw this'.

I've found myself using the propritary HLE emulated games in all the offical arcade compilations found instead mostly.  Even if they take up far more memory stick space than traditional roms.

That and sadly, no home brewed emulator is going to work as well as Metal Slug Collection's offical emulation.  Mmm, glorious. <3

I have Mame4 All V4.9R2

Plays nearly all the games, but the classics run great.  Discs of Tron works but needs tweaking.

I have 500 roms inside the Eboot.

I like the different resolutions too.

I think it plays with .36 roms.

Starwars Vector runs but at high speed, the samples are like chipmunks.   :laugh2:

I thinking the bigger question is who has that much time in the bathroom?  I'm usually only on the pot for a few moments, hardly enough time to start a game, much less actually play through a rousing game of dig dug.

That's where I do most of my reading and gaming.

I installed mame4all on my PSP memory card.
I will not run. It gives me a 80020148 error. I did a few searches on the net and it looks like I may need an original UMD? Can anyone confirm this?

I'm running 3.90 M33-3 on a slim. :dunno

Yeah, You need an actual UMD in the system to run basically all homebrew

thats not true at all Kajoq. Moose13 check your vsh menu settings. No emu I have used at all requires a umd inserted at any time. The only time ive needed my umd inserted was to play a umd movie rip.

That's what I was afraid of. I just got the PSP for father's day, and I don't have any discs, nor was planning to buy one. I'll have to ask around for one nobody wants anymore.

Thanks for the clarification.

Ok, NOW I'm interested...

Thanks for the tip!

Do you need Firmware 1.50 to run these?
I've heard there are some rollback programs, but some that are fakes... wonder if anyone's tried these?

There's a Mame4All installer floating around on the net... that's what I used running m33 3.90...make sure the folder is in your Games folder, I think. I don't see why you'd need a UMD to play any freeware, the firmware's hacked. Just added Tac-Scan, Super Pac-Man, Mousetrap, Burgertime, 1943 and Time Pilot this week... all work well. Vidmouse, if you have 1.50 firmware, there's nothing to roll back to-- upgrade to anything over 3.71 and you should be golden for all recent emu's. Like I said, I went to 3.90 and can run everything. Incidentally, I couldn't get Mame to run until I dl'd the installer, then it was fine.

I got it to run!!!! The problem was, I was using the Phat version of the Mame4All software and I have a slim. It seems that only about 30% of the homebrew software actually works on teh slim versions.

BTW, I'm running 4.02 M33 currently.

Cool...

I did just get one off ebay and it should be coming

(had to risk it, was too goood a deal to pass up)

Gonna need some help here....

I received my PSP and it was firmware 2.50...
been playing with it and have been able to
downgrade it to 1.50, then upgrade it to 3.52m33,
then 4.01m33, then 4.01m33-2.  I went into
recovery mode and selected it to run homebrew
from the 1.50 directory.

On my flashcard I have a
\PSP\GAME150\cps2psp directory with the following in it:

cache directory with .cache files made from
the rom converter

EBOOT.PBP
rominfo.cps2
zipname.cps2

(files from NJ's cps2psp 2.0 version)

Still getting the Won't execute error...

???

EDIT:
Never mind, I figured it out... forgot to download and install
the 1.50 addon pack, heh...   :banghead:

SOOOO happy to have ddsom working on my psp, and right
before a trip too!

Cheers

So I am reading now that if you have a PSP with newer firmware there is no need to flash it in order to get it to run MAME, etc?

Secondly, I've heard they're easy to brick if you do have to flash them....

Bottom line, I've got birthday money burning a hole in my pocket, and can't decide between the GP2X, a new (or possibly used) PSP, or another DS.  Mainly I'm looking for great handheld emulation and movie playback (something where I don't have to convert all the time). Thoughts?

sounds like the gp2x is the one for you then. theres no denying the psp has a beautiful screen, and really cool looking new games but it isnt designed around emulation and homebrew. the gp2x doesnt need to be modded in any way for emus, plays divx as is, and has the right aspect ratio screen for all the old school stuff. mame has over 1000 games supported at the moment.

edit: over 1000 games on the version i have. looks like they havent been idle in the 18 months or so

One left off your list was Tapwave's Zodiac...
However, after trying out all my handhelds (PSP, DS, GBA, Zodiac -- no GP2X yet)
I would say there are +s and -s with each:

PSP
+ GREAT screen
+ digital and analog direction control
+ PSP games are good, if too few
+ Plays PS1, N64, SNES, Gen, GBA (I think), CPS1, CPS2, "some" MAME but all at full sound
+ best web browser
+ No "extra" memory cards to buy, just mem sticks
- Mem sticks aren't that cheap
- Not as much MAME or NeoGeo as some others...
- Harder to work with if you don't have the right firmware
- Heavier

DS
+ Touch screen and some NDS games are really innovative w/ it
+ 2 screens = 1 big screen (sort-of)
+ Has a web browser, but it's worse than the PSP's
- Have to have a linker card (R4 or something similar) to run homebrew
+ Plays DS, GBA, NeoGeo (and I'm probably missing a few here..)
+ Vibration support via rumble pak
+ Play movies ok
- but you have to convert to dpg files

Tapwave Zodiac
+ Touch screen, albeit one big one
+ Movies are EASY to play (conversion still recommended;
I use Vemode to make it easier)
+ Plays SNES, Genesis, GB/GBC, 2600, MAME (v.36), Neo Geo
- The MAME and NeoGeo have to play without sound to keep up
with the speed... don't know if that's true for the GP2X or not...
- Defunct company, no support
- Homebrew support is dying...

GP2X (NOT from experience, just from looking stuff up on the web)
+ Uses SD cards (cheaper)
+ Runs MAME, etc. -- pretty much same ballpark as Zodiac
+ Has optional TV out cable so you can use it like a portable movie player
for when you're at a hotel, etc.
- Battery hog; runs on AA's
+ Runs on AA's, so they're easily replaceable

RTSDaddy2:  re:  your question on flashing the PSP
If you have newer firmware you MIGHT need to flash it to run homebrew
MAME.  You need to have a homebrew enabled firmware to run
homebrew apps.  If you have a non-homebrew firmware above
3.xx (I forget exactly which version) then I believe you will also
need a Pandora's battery to downgrade it to 1.50.  (if not, then you
can downgrade it to 1.50 like I did).  From there, you can upgrade it
to homebrew versions as you need.  (I like the 4.01m33-2 version
because it's the latest and has full web-browsing support, not
like 1.50...)

does it really play N64 emus? i read on the gp2x forum its never gonna happen on that system because of the combination of emulating a 64 bit system on a 32 bit processor combined with the fact that the processor isnt magnitudes faster than the N64. so maybe you could get 1 frame a second or something but not playable I imagined that would be roughly the same deal with the PSP?

N64 does play (google Daedalus) but not at full speed...
Hydro Thunder is still somewhat enjoyable, I think some other games
are at full speed.

I might have also spoken too soon about "full sound" too... still
experimenting here..
