Title: Pinball Emulators - Vertical/Horizontal Orientation?
Post by: Franco B on May 09, 2008, 12:38:34 pm
Firstly, I know nothing about pinball emulators (apart from I want to have them supported on my cocktail  :))

I have heard of Visual Pinball and also PinMAME and possibly some others with I may have forgot  ???

Could anyone give me some basic information about them?

My main reason for posting is that I need to drill holes for the pinball buttons on the CP ends of my cocktail but I'm not sure which CP(s) to mount buttons in.

After seeing the recent Visual Pinball thread I can see that VP at least supports vertical orientation but I'm sure I have seen screen shots of another emulator/setup where the table was displayed on a horizontal display.

I'm guessing that if there is an option between vertical and horizontal then vertical play would be suitable as it better represents the orientation of a real pinball machine??

Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

It depends on the emulator. With VP, no, because the tables are set up in landscape mode with the backglass layered behind. FuturePinball is a different story and may be fine vertical.

Wow, that future pinball looks awesome, I'll have to give it a spin.

Recently, I was looking into the idea of giving pinball emulators another whirl now that I have a 22" widescreen monitor, but unfortunately on those LCD monitors, the viewing angle is very bad. If you'd like to lay down a widescreen LCD at the same orientation as a pin, you're going to notice some nasty contrast issues. I know when I orient mine vertically, it only looks good if you're looking at it from the right. Same thing on about 20 monitors I looked at in the electronics store too. Perhaps Future Pinball is the right idea, everything in real 3d.
