Title: RGB/Sync to SVGA (or S-Video)
Post by: jukingeo on May 09, 2008, 09:38:04 am
Hello all,

I have a unique situation in that instead of trying to hook up an SVGA computer to an RGB, monitor, I want to go the other way.

I have a few Jamma PCB games that I would like to create a rig for.  I used to hook up these boards to a HUGE and extremely heavy 19" commercial RGB color monitor.   The monitor is getting old and flaky and frankly I don't want to move the heavy beast around anymore.   So what I would like to do is get a small lightweight video projector or even an LCD flat screen.  It seems the most common input for these is either SVGA or S-Video (Yes, I know composite is the most common but also the worst quality and most inconvenient to work with).

A video game PCB has a standard RGB with Sync output (or what is now called component video).

I have noticed that newer TV's do have component video, but I am not 100% sure if this is compatible with the old RGB-Sync standard that is used on arcade PCB's.  However, I did notice that almost all the projectors/TV monitors I have seen they have S-video.  I understand that S-video is not as good a quality as SVGA or even RGB...but would it be easier to interface with my video game PCB's?

I would like to know what my options are.   I do prefer to go RGB-Sync To an SVGA projector/monitor because then I could also hook up a computer to it later on if I want.  Thus I would then have a COMPLETE rig.

So the question is what do I need to accomplish the task?

Thank You,

Geo

RGB with sync is NOT component video.

Thats correct. There was another one I saw on ebay that was cheaper... Only 25 bucks, and it only had RCA and S-Video out, no component. I missed the end of the auction though. E-mailed the seller and haven't heard back from him yeat.
I would have bought it just for having a quick way to test JAMMA boards outside a cab, I don't even care about the video quality for that.
