Title: On Mortal Kombat vs. DC Superheroes
Post by: shmokes on May 09, 2008, 01:13:02 am: I've known this was coming for some time. It's basically a late-to-the-party response to Marvel vs. Capcom.

But for some reason the issue of fatalities never even occurred to me until I just read that they won't be there. I mean, of course they won't be there. But I'd never even thought about it. Can you imagine being able to tear Batman's head off, or grind Wonder Woman up in a meat grinder, or tear Superman's still-beating heart out of his chest while his spandex-laden body crumples to the ground? :laugh2:

only "deep" fighting game I know is capcom vs snk 2. that game is F-ING serious. youd know when you play on a higher level(which I do..played in/won tournaments before)

And 2D aside, what about Namco (Soul Calibur, Tekken) and Tecmo (Dead or Alive)?

pretty much. SNK cant make fighting games. 4 button setup is instant deal breaker. wonder why major tournaments like evo(www.evo2k.com) doesnt have SNK games ;)

3d fighting games are ok though.

I would be willing to try it out just to see how crazy they got with the fatality's but if they dont put them in there its just another plain fighter that was not done enough to be good or set aside from the other 100+

Isn't there a fighter generator program out there where you can custum make your own characters / moves? I forget the name. I wouldn't be suprised to find that someone has already done this.

Isn't there a fighter generator program out there where you can custum make your own characters / moves? I forget the name. I wouldn't be suprised to find that someone has already done this.

there was a weird game like that made for the playstation I forgot the name but it was not a very good game really but you could create your fighter looks moves aunts etc. wich was alriht but the gameplay was terrible.

I agree with you on every note except for the fact that SNK makes good fighting games, not only capcom. Fatal Fury, Garou Mark of the Wolves... ect

Only thing that i did not like from capcom is the freaking Street fighter EX games. seriously. Like wtf.

This weekend I had dnner with a friend of mine who use to work for Midway. He says this game will be awesome. This is going to be a 3d game. The fighters aren’t stuck in a box or a ring, it’s going to be in an interactive environment that’s larger than any other fighter game.

I trust this guy’s opinion, so I’m looking forward to at least renting this game.

Yet I highly doubt that you have played any of the current generation MK games.

They all have been great, and yes revolutionary.

SF4..yeah right, now that is funny. They should stay the hell out of 3D, because they haven't made any decent games in that regard PERIOD.

As it stands, from the new trailer that has been posted, I am hooked. The graphics are amazing. Being a huge fan of Armegeddon, and a still avid player online, I love the back to basics idea, and the MK series continues to be perfected.

SNK vs Capcom 2 is a great game, and cartoons are fun, but it is time to step into the real. Great gameplay and great fun, I feel sorry for most of you. That and I find it funny as well. :laugh2:

I *have* played all the current MKs, Ive bought and/or played every incarnation on every system MK1 on game gear? yeap, MKII on playstation? yeap, UMK3 on saturn? still own it. actual arcade machine? yeap dedicated MKII with UMK3 panel and all 3 PCBs. I have all the 3D ones on XBOX and the only one worth owning is shaolin monks. I also have all 3 midway collections for XBOX AND the midway collection for PSP (all retail no bootlegs)

I am a huge MK fan, second prolly only to MK3FAN. the 3D games were awful and gimmicky. MK has never been about depth or playability, just gore and flash; and thats why I loved it. they messed up with the branching fatalities, well the idea was good, but the characters still need their signature fatalities, scorpion not torching them? kung lao not using his hat for slicing? no kiss of death for sonya or kitana? what were they thinking?

MK vs DC is overtly lame in premise, to take the gory MK franchise and castrate it to make it fit with the DC world. Honestly, who DOESNT want to rip superman's head off? the fact you cant means I wont waste my time with this game. they should have just make a DC fighting game based on their horrible MK3D engine and had some MK guys hidden in there

There is absolutely death, and unlike all the other "deep" games, it is the subtle differences...not the super chailed linked combos that give the game its unique appeal....that is why were are on 8 instead.

Again, I cannot disagree more, there is nothing gimmicky about the new games and this is what shuts the SF fans the hell up....those that actually have played the games.

Though I will say from one fanboy to another, you have missed on some great fun in the 3D games.

Armeggedon brings back the flip kick and Deception brought back the uppercut. The former perfected the 2D feel, and thus IMHO makes it the ultimate MK game....aside from the stupid non-special fatalities, I am with you all there way there. I just cannot believe they screwed that up.

But nitpicks aside...the game is very balanced, and it retains the best of the best of all the games.

I do not think MK Vs DC is a bad move. Matter of fact, if you look at the trailer on MK Online you will see exactly what I mean. There is alot of promise with this game, though I do suggest you explore Armageddon in all its glory to really get pumped with the new release.

Trust me, this on fan to another.

Oh and by the way, the Fatalities are there, I just watched Scorpion burn up The Flash, so I don't know what you are talking about. I don't know what the final word is on real blood, but this is better then nothing so far.

I'm not a die hard fanboy of any series...I just play what I like. If done correctly I think MK v. DC could be loads of fun. I think the "its late to the vs. game" is a load of crap. Who cares if it didn't come out when MvC did? Just because they did the first crossover doesn't mean others can't do it down the road.

Oh and you guys do know there are fatalities in MK v. DC, right? It was confirmed in a developer interview on Gamespot.

Its looking better but come on, Superman's "fatality" is just Sheeva's finisher from MK3. They need to do something new and cool not recycle he lame ones.

All the haters are going to be missing out on a great game I have a feeling.

The last 3 were really well down. HD make so many improvements, which is pretty insane because Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon were pure eye candy.

I am sketchy about going back to 2D gameplay. I actually liked being able to walk around fireballs and what not. I am afraid of another Mortal Kombat 4.... though I likeed it, it just wasn't anywhere near the originals. Still, there hasn't really been a MK game I have HATED. But this would be the closest thing to it.

Guess we will see.

Who the hell is Deathstroke though??

So far the roster is Subzero, Scorpion, Raiden, Kano, Sonya, Kitana, Shang Tsung, Jax, Lui Kang

On DC side is Superman, Batman, Catwoman, The Joker, The Green Lantern, Wonderwoman, Captain Marvel, Flash,...and again Deathstroke????

Only 4 more characters left to be revealed. At least all the classics are covered. Me guesses on MK side that Mileena, Reptile, Kung Lao, and Johnny Cage. If Cage doesn't make it, that would be F'd up! Just as long as there are no cyber ninjas. Noob and Smoke are always a possibility, but I don't think they belong in this game. Same goes for a Jade...etc. Baraka of course is always possible if there is going to be a Mileena...but they could leave both out for my taste.

From the DC side, I am pretty much banking on Aquaman(cause he was hinted at), Lex Luther, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Doomsday, Martian Manhunter....etc. Not a big DC fan, but the few I do know.

About MK coming late in the crossover game, for me, at least it has finally happened! Getting DC in the mix is great news, and it will open the door for the ultimate crossovers DC vs Marvel. MK Vs Streetfighter...Midway vs Capcom and lastly a royal rumble DC/MIDWAY vs Marvel/Capcom.... I am ready to splooge now. Thank you and goodnight.

3rd Strike is a bucket of awesome. One of the best (if not THE best) street fighter game out there.

And as for SNK sucking.....I also disagree. Garou Mark of the Wolf is badass.

The first Mortal Kombat gameplay was horrible compared to Street Fighter. They compensated with buckets of blood. It was a success and as near as I can tell the franchise has never updated this winning formula. I'm not offended by the blood in the slightest, but I can't for the life of me see how the blood could change your opinion of the game. I can't see how fatalities could take a ---smurfy--- game and transform it into a good game. That makes no sense to me.

Like many people my age, I have a deeply ingrained nostalgia for MK fatalities. I still freshly remember the first time I saw MK in the arcade, and walked up just in time to see a PC controlled Sub Zero rip out Liu Kang's spine. I was only 11 years old, and I was completely shocked...followed by a slack jawed "AWESOME!!!".

Yes, this image has forever cemented my love for Mortal Kombat AND the fatalities.

But you can't take a ---smurfy--- game and make it good by adding blood to it. Grand Theft Auto is awesome. And without the over-the-top violence it would be substantially less awesome. But if Rockstar didn't craft a game with brilliant game mechanics, writing, pacing, humor, detail, etc., the violence alone would not save it. That's why so many companies have tried and failed to duplicate the GTA formula.

BTW, I just turned 30. I too was the perfect age when Mortal Kombat came out. And when I first saw it I had the same reaction as you. But then I played it and it wasn't fun. And then I played it a bunch more times and it continued to not be fun. You could rip peoples' heads off and punch people in the balls. And that stuff was funny and cool. But once you've seen it, you've seen it. Even at that early age I apparently required my videogames to have some depth.

Mortal Kombat is like Sonic the Hedgehog. All gimmick, no substance. Both enjoyed far more success than they deserved, and both have been working their ways toward obscurity for exactly the reasons I've described.

I always had fun playing against other people in MK(MKII specifically) and always hated playing the computer. My nephews like playing against each other.

Yeah, I didn't say Fatality. Finisher includes Friendship, Babality, etc

no its not. it was made for scrubs. 8 frames random parrries can kiss my azz too. even 3s players doesnt know if they meant to parry something or not. some admits to liking it because its random and gets them wins.

sf4 was made for scrubs too but its not AS bad. its playable but I doubt I'd play that much when it hits the consoles. I was at the arcade last sunday and beat up like everyone there and I was [ALMOST] bored with sf4 already.

cvs2 has like 10x more fun factor,reply value,mind games,depth than all other street fighter COMBINED. this is the only "deep" fighting game that ever existed and possibly will until maybe cvs3 comes out and they keep the same engine/grooves. of course this is just personal opinion.just wanted to throw it out there. :cheers:
