Title: Wire repair (edit: added pics)
Post by: shmokes on May 08, 2008, 08:09:13 pm: I have a pair of nice, in-ear headphones. They came with a cool little carrying case, but a flaw in the case caused the cable to wear in a certain spot, and now the insulation is completely worn through there, to the bare wire. Is there a good way to repair the wire? I want it to be durable, but also not bulky/ugly. I know that electrical tape is an option, but I wonder if there's something that will be less conspicuous. The wire is black, BTW. Also, the connector is on a 90 degree angle, which might make any heat-shrinking tubing option difficult unless it starts out with a pretty big opening. I'm not sure how much that stuff shrinks or if it would even be a solution here (I've never used it for anything before).

Any suggestions? The headphones are Shure E2C.

Post by: Grasshopper on May 08, 2008, 08:16:34 pm: I wouldn't bother with the repair. Just buy an audio extension lead, cut one of the ends off and solder it to the headphones.

Nope.

Just electrical tape the damn things already. Noone is gonna be looking at your headphone wires that closely.

Before long it will come loose, and start sliding up and down the wire leaving a sticky residue behind. And while it will provide insulation to protect from shocks (already not a concern for me), it's not going to do very much for the structural integrity of the cable, i.e., to keep the thing from tearing worse or snapping.

So, yeah, while I'd rather the solution be as elegant/inconspicuous as possible, which is totally reasonable, it's not my only concern.
