Title: A hinge problem
Post by: Vash on April 28, 2008, 10:38:48 pm
Alright, so I'm just about ready to start construction, but I've hit a bit of a snag.  I don't know what I was thinking when I designed this =p  The first picture is how the cab will look with the keyboard door shut.  Fine and dandy.  But the second is how I want it to open.  The problem is I don't know if a hinge exists that will allow me to open the door as such with out having the hinges on the outside

The door will be secured with a magnetic catch just below the CP box.  Pushing up releases it, and the door should pivot where that crease is.  My solution was to drill a small hole into the sides of the cabinet the side of the keyboard hole, place a peg inside, and just let it swing on that, but it's not exactly an optimal solution.  Any help would be fantastic.

since hinges dont stop at 180* then why dont you just put the hinge in backwards. meaning where it would be at its 1* closed postion if the tray went on the inside and be at its 180* where your tray would be closed, then its extended 200-210* where you want the tray to stop! Follow me?

Also make shure you have enough room for your buttons, ipac, and keyboard in that little area!

Wow.  That's really...obvious =p  Thanks a ton.  I've been trying to wrap my head around that (and what I was thinking when I designed it) for a few days now.

As for the space issue...there should be plenty, though I'll be cutting it close.  Nothing but the keyboard is going in that little drawer.  The CP Box is resting on top of it, and there should be just enough room to get my joysticks in there depth wise.  Thanks a lot.

I was just double checking, i cant tell you how many people including myself failed to measure the first time and ended up screaming and throwing stuff in their workshop over an inch!

I tried this on my cabinet keyboard access panel (similar layout as the OP), but the width of the timber constrains the opening of the hinge.  I opted for SOSS hinges, as can be rebated into the timber and are not visible from the exterior.

Why don't you use cabinet door hinges? Just drill 30 or 40 mm holes in the panel and fit one of them in. Hettich makes all kinds of hinges for this.
