Title: Need help with making a switch box for pc/playstation 2
Post by: thesayianman on April 26, 2008, 03:55:19 pm
Hey guys

I'm currently trying to fashion a switch box that will have the ability to switch between PC and PS2 for my control panel. I've seen a solution for switching on the forum using a parallel port manual switch box. This solution however would require two knobs. Each player would have to turn there knob for switching between the PC and PS2. I would like to have a one knob solution. Also the PS2 controller which I pad hacked appears to have multiple grounds. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

you can switch two Playstation controllers with one parallel port switch or even a VGA switch box if you use Playstation controller adapters for the PC.

How would I do this?  ???  Can you point me to any thing with the wiring specifics?

You can use a PS2 Controller(s) to PC USB port adapter: Like This one (http://www.colordrives.com/usb-to-ps2-joypad-converter-adapter.html).
This way you are only switching the controller wires.  The PS2 controller connectors have 9 pins but most controllers only use 7 wires(I think) Either way, a fully wired parallel port switch should yield you more than enough connections.  Once you have the PC Adapter you can connect your Controllers to your PC with the same connection as your PS2. so the wiring through the Parallel port switch is 1 to 1.  You can wire directly to the switch inside or splice some parallel port cables for it.

Alternatively, you can switch two PS2 controllers with an older Video + Keyboard + Mouse KVM, using the PS/2 connections for the controllers, and you will still have 15-pins to switch audio and video, using the VGA D-SUB 15.

Ok I think I understand now. So basically instead of wiring the Joy buttons to the parallel port I wire the controller connectors instead. Is there a specific way I have to do this?

I also have a question about the ps/2 port. Isn't that a 6 pin connector. If so then how do you attach a 7/9 wire connection to it? Sorry if my questions sound noobish  :P

here is how it needs to be wired up, sorry for the crappy paint illustration, but it gets the job done...

if you don't want to chop the plugs off of the ps2 controllers, you can always get a few ps2 controller extension cables and chop them up.

^^ Using the shield as 7th connection.  I cracked mine open and it is wired with all 7.  The switch inside a Keyboard+Mouse+Video is in some cases the same as the one in a parallel port switch, though.  So, really that idea is only useful if you are using the connectors built on the switching box, and you need a couple more connections than a parallel port connector provides.
