Title: Any 4 / 8 ways switchable joysticks that can replace those on an X-Arcade ?
Post by: Mamezilla on April 26, 2008, 10:07:39 am
Hey all,

I currently have an X-Arcade 2 players controller that I've won a while back.  I'm using  it in the meantime with an old computer and the 27" TV in my basement to play classics since my cabinet project isn't finished yet.

I'm wondering if any switchable 4 / 8 ways joystick could replace those in the X-Arcade controller.  I believe there was a joystick that could be switched from 4 to 8 ways and vice-versa by pulling the handle and twisting it one way or the other to place the restrictor so you didn't have to go thru the bottom plate of the controller to change it.  I've searched and couldn't find any infos about this.

If this kind of joystick is (still) available, what kind is it and would it fit in the X-Arcade ?  Or are there any other solutions ?

Yes, I've seen those  but I'd have to "hack" the panel to have it fit.  I'd prefer a solution that would use the existing holes on the panel, since my woodworking skills are are very weak.

Edit:  I just came across the Mag-Stik Plus on the Ultimarc website which seems to fit what I want.  Would these fit on the X-Arcade panel without too much modifications ?

from the looks of the diagram on ultimarc's site, the magstik's mounting plate is more narrow than the standard sticks in the x-arcade.  the mounting holes for the x-arcade are at the locations as happ competition/super sticks, which also are the same as the ultimarc J-stik.  if you look at the link below, you will see that the J-stik mounting holes are farther apart than those on the magstik.    if the magstick is anything like the jstick though, the mounting plate is held on with 4 screws...you could probably make your own mounting plate out of a small piece of metal using only a drill and a hole saw.   other than that, i dont know what to tell you.   the J-stik is 4-8 way switchable, but only from below the panel, which wouldn't work so great on the x-arcade ...(unless you left the bottom panel off of it)
