I wanted to ask you guys as most of you aren't fanboys as I've ran into around other places and even at bestbuy etc... (was told that the PS3 at one point not so long ago was THE BEST blu ray player on the market)
I'm looking into the Blu-Ray players, and for the same price can get a PS3... would you buy one just for that?

Yes... and MGS4... :applaud:

I would just get a PS3. If you do get another Blu-Ray player, just make sure its able to connect to the internet and download updates because I've heard that was a major problem with all of the early models of Blu-Ray players.
-
I still believe the PS3 is the BEST blu ray player, some significant updates have come out since I got mine back in Aug 07, I love it

There may be better standalone players, but you won't find one at less than double the price of a PS3.
I hear that eventually it will play some games, too. :)

This is one time that the intertubes aren't full of just hype -- I actually do believe that the PS3 is one of the better (if not best) BluRay player on the market. As has been said, make sure whatever you get is upgradeable through the net, but for the prices you're going to pay, its hard to beat the PS3.
Even if you have no desire to play games, the PS3 is still a compelling purchase as a BD player. I've really enjoyed mine as far as movies go -- its streams stuff fairly well also, which some other players may not.
-
As a bonus, even if you don't have much interest in any PS3 games, you can still use that PS3 as a nice looking PS2 with upscaling if you get the backwards compatable version. :)

I too think the PS3 is the best BluRay player on the market, and it's unquestionably the best value on the market. However, one obnoxious point of consideration if you're getting it SOLELY as a BD player. It uses Bluetooth for its remote. There's no IR sensor. This means that VERY few universal remotes can control it. So if you're planning on integrating it into your entertainment center, plan on being forced to use multiple remotes.

There is no 3rd party IR offering?
That really sucks.
[EDIT]
3rd Party IR solution. ;)

[EDIT 2]
Not yet released apparently. :(

Well there is. Nyko sells one. It comes with a USB dongle though and you need to learn the IR codes since it's not a standard (maybe by now it is since I checked this months ago).

Another agreeing with the above. While I certainly didn't buy the PS3 to watch BluRay, we have purchased two or three movies and they've played excellently. The PS3 is definitely the best value available to you at this point.

That's cool that there's an IR solution. I plan to eventually own a PS3, and I'm sure it'll be my first BluRay player. I use a Harmony Remote that doesn't do Bluetooth. Hopefully by the time I get it, though, there will be other solutions on the market, since that USB dongle is WAY bigger than it needs to be. Better than nothing, though, and I'm sure I'd buy it today if I had a PS3.
BTW, has anybody else noticed that Nyko has been doing brilliant work this generation with their peripherals? They've been on top of their ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, developing some really high quality, innovative stuff.

Actually Logic3 has an IR remote too. Although it doesn't look as nice.
